Those!

Post » Sat Jul 03, 2010 3:17 am

So I'm wandering around near Megaton - I'm doing some stuff on the Wasteland Guide - and this kid runs up to me and tells me to find his Dad. There are ants involved...

I really, really don't want to go off and do this now. However, is he going to run off and get himself killed, or his his father doing to die if I carry on with what I'm doing first and ignore this quest for a while?

Or does everyone stash themselves somewhere safe until I'm ready to do it?

Thanks.

Kids can't die so you don't have to worry about him, and the quest will be fine if you wait to actually start it even though it's been added to you PipBoy.

That's cool, thanks. I just read on a Wiki that the kid runs into a shelter as well.

I was just terrified of it svcking me into a quest when I didn't want to do it; I hated the ones on Oblivion that did that.

The father is already dead so you don't need to worry about that part of it. It's best not to do that one right away, those ants are tough. Wait until you have leveled up a bit and have found lots of ammo. You'll need it. But it's a quest that's worth doing eventually as you get a fairly good reward from it. There's only one or two quests in the game where time is a factor, most of them will wait for you to arrive.

Thats a spoilerific answer. But its ultimately correct - you can come back to this quest any time you like. I would recommend that as well, since the enemies you will face are very difficult to overcome at a low level. Level up a bit and enjoy it from level 12 onwards (bring a hunting rifle) - before that, its quite tough, actually. Good quest, though. :)

Oh right, this is General Discussions isn't it. Sorry.

A hunting rifle? I won't do it until I get my hands on Lincoln's Repeater with a bunch of .44 ammo, and have a good stash of Shotgun Shells for my Combat Shotgun. That's one of the toughest areas in the game I've come across actually, I always kind of dread heading over there. Fortunately I found a mod that has Bryan stay put in Grayditch instead of running to find you, so I don't have to feel guilty about putting that quest off. He has a knack of always showing up at the wrong time too. I almost had a mine field blow up in my face one time.

Lincoln's Repeater is even better than a Hunting Rifle, of course. Its one of the best weapons in the game, though the ammo is much rarer. I don't think that the Hunting Rifle should be underestimated, though - its a staple weapon well up until level 16 or so and is more than adequate for the Those! quest, providing your Small Guns skill is high enough.

Though I love it, I find the Combat Shotgun is almost useless in this quest. The range of the gun is much shorter than the range of your enemies. Much better to pick them off at distance with a Hunting Rifle.

Leave companions behind on this quest, I feel. They get in the way and make sneak attacks almost impossible to get.

That's not always possible though, especially if you wait until the higher levels when you come across the tougher versions like Warriors. Sometimes they'll reach you before you can take them out from a distance, in which case a Combat Shotgun comes in very handy. Along with the nectar some of them drop. That stuff usually protects me fairly well if I need to deal with them up close. Mines can be very useful as well once you get down into the subway tunnels, and there's a number of them in the ammo boxes down there.

You're right about the metro tunnels. Whenever someone mentions the Those! quest the only thing that I think of is me running around Grayditch like a maniac. I never think of the metro tunnels at all, even though the Grayditch part is barely half way through the quest. I also have another, more enduring, image of Dogmeat on fire, which I why I leave him at home for this quest. :(

Excellent point about the frag mines, too. They will come in very handy.

I usually try to put that quest off myself. For some reason I just hate grayditch though I can't deny the reward. I think the hunting rifle is good enough until you get to the last part of the quest. It's at that point that I whip out Lincoln's repeater (or wish that I had it, depending on the scenario.) Of course half the reason I go there in the first place is to hear, "give me the naughty nightware!"

A bit off topic; you should never underestimate the hunting rifle. My current character is level 18 and he still carries a hunting rifle around because I don't want to waste .44 ammo on raiders and I can't snipe things with Xuanlong.

one thing to keep in mind, there is another entrance/exit to the tunnel that is part of the ques thoset. don't exit the other end unless you are ready to start another quest. shortly after you exit at the other end, a unmarked quest will start. you might not even be aware that a quest has started.

He chased me all the way to the citadel one time. He doesn't travel to the east side of the river though. BTW wheres that mod?
