A thought thats bugged me for a time now.

So one thing I don't get is, in Fallout 2, there was Vault City, built with a G.E.C.K. and in Fallout 3, all they did was find a G.E.C.K. just to dissasemble it for one or two pieces for Project Purity. WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS? I mean, it makes no sense, you take something with the capability to terraform, just to take one or two pieces of it and make the purifier work. Its like someone saying 'here's a million dollars, by yourself a heater here in Antartica, only to burn 999,999,999 dollars of it in a trash fire and say 'Gee sure wish I could buy a heater, but all I have is a dollar'

Lol I thought the EXACT same thing when I got the G.E.C.K. Why cant i just transform the wasteland into a green paradise? Make megaton into a city? Make myself the Supreme Ruler of the world?

Fawkes- "Here you go, The G.E.C.K Just as promised."

Lone Wanderer- "Finally."

Walk out the door and you get jumped. SON OF A BIT**

Just saying.

The general consensus according to the Fallout wiki seems to be that the GECK is not a global terraforming device, it can theoretically terraform a small area. By adapting it to work in the purifier, it could benefit people over a larger area.

Or, maybe the rules just got rewritten with the new game. It happens.

Oh I know it isn't. It's just that Look at the chosen one and in comparison to the size of Vault City, its probably Megatonesque size. Besides, they dismanteled their GECK AFTER using it in VC and it still made them prosper. I think James underestimated the use of the GECK >:I

Well, I think since the G.E.C.K is supposed to be extremely unstable and dangerous, James might have thought that the purifier was a much safer way to bring prosperity to the Wastes, and Vault City took a huge chance and managed to get lucky.

I dunno. The one from Vault 87 might have ended up to be a complete disaster for all we know.

Or, maybe the tech took some time to show itself to be unstable. Maybe it was like the Genesis Device in Star Trek II and III, it seemd to work perfectly at first, but went awry later. Maybe by ten years after Fallout 2, Vault City had become a scorched and irradiated hole in the ground.

Braun himself admitted that the GECK was very unreliable, and I believe James knew this, too. If he were to use it to try and turn the wasteland into a lush, green paradise and it didn't work, the GECK would have been wasted, and they would have made no progress.

On the other hand, taking a few parts from it and using them to power the Purifier is simple, and will probably be more helpful and affect a larger area.

True. I just hope he kept those holodisks, re-educating the wasteland is the first step to rebuilding civilization. :vaultboy:

Also, I have a suspicion it might have been the cold fusion/fission generator he stole off the GECK, I mean, it's likely something far beyond the capabilities of a 4-5 wasteland scientists to reproduce. and it sounds like it could be powerful enough to power the Purifier.
