I thought you could go everywhere you could see...

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 11:14 am

I remember Todd saying something about how every piece of land and every mountain you see, you could go to. That there would be no hidden barriers, only natural ones.

So I was testing this... http://i42.tinypic.com/ds7m8.jpg

I know the game wasn't going to be infinitely large; but I expected just a seemingly endless expanse of ocean in the North and East, and impassable mountains to the South and West. As you can see in the image, there are many little islands out in the direction that "I cannot go" to.

Although, I am still technically out of the map (I am literally under the clouds at the edges of the map) and there was actually a dungeon a little ways south of where I took the image. Which I thought was bad ass.

I actually found a path to the very south and when I tried to walk down the path the game told me I couldn't go that way. Maybe it's part of a future expansion.

It's not the content I am upset about; it's the principle of the matter. Of course there was going to be barriers; but we were told in many different interviews and preview articles for the game that the barriers would be natural ones, not invisible walls.

Besides, everyone else gets to nit-pick. Why can't I? :P

so you think the edges of skyrim should just be giant black walls? Think about it if you could go anywhere you saw the size of skyrim would have to be infinity or at least it would have to be round

If you're on PC, you can edit Skyrim.ini, and add
bBorderRegionsEnabled=0
under [General].

I have yet to test it myself, but if it's the same as Oblivion, it will disable the invisible walls. Not like there will be much out there of course.

Principalities really only hold weight in practicalities.

Yeah, maybe Todd Stretched the truth on this one or it could have been true at the time of development.

But ultimately? Not anything noteworthy.

I believe he was making the distinction between TES and games where everything is a backdrop. Just painted in. His phrasing was poor, the idea is legitimate.

To be fair, Pete in one of his tweets, said that both a combination of invisible walls and natural borders. No source, because it would be hard to find now, but if you want to look go for it.

Skyrim is only so large. All of you saying, "Skyrim would have to be infinitely large." Bull. Unless Skyrim has taken over all of Tamriel(still not infintely large) there has to be borders.

That's the end of the game world. Technically Tod is right: you can go anywhere in the game world. Obviously you can't just keep heading east into never never land

No, that game's called Daggerfall. You can walk for miles (sometimes even on land) and see nothing. Or you might stumble upon a town no player has ever visited (not that you could tell if you did). Not sure what happens when you hit the end of the map, but ironically that's the TES game where the mountains are a pained backdrop.

I ran into the invisible border once in Skyrim. The part that bugged me was it was on a patch and I could see stuff down the path I wanted to visit. Time for some ini hacking methinks.

I thought the issue was with invisible walls within the game area. In new Vegas here were areas that looked like you could access but you jeered blocked by invisible walls that were funeling you down certain paths. I don't think Todd's quotes reffered to the game borders but rather the area within the game borders.
