Thoughts On DX11 and the XBox360

Post » Wed Feb 17, 2010 1:43 pm

I believe game developers do their job for more then just a buck I believe they do their job to make THE best game ever..

Well, some of them do. I do believe the group at Beth to be part of that group which is why I wonder a little at some of the things they do, like this issue for instance. Not much we can do about it though. Maybe I'm just getting used to gaming being hamstrung by consoles.

Makes me feel old lol. :teehee:

Not if it was a DX11 only game, most people don't have the capability yet. I'm not sure what the market breakdown is but many people are still using DX9 cards and others are using DX10 units.

/shrug Anyone that has bought a video card in the last 2 years is already DX11 capable more or less. They haven't made DX9 cards since like 2007 or round about. Besides I don't think anyone has said "make the game only run in DX11". I'm talking broader than just that anyway. Having the game use more than a single core and use more than 2GB of RAM without having to hack the .exe would be a nice PC feature. Even little things like having a UI and control scheme that take advantage of the mouse/keyboard setup and high resolution monitors would be great.

There are a lot of things they could do to enhance the PC version and entice PC gamers that are fed up with console ports. This need not only be about DX11.

but add some DX11 features where they can.

They aren't adding any at all from what I understand. Which is some real crap.

Like I said before, Todd should just start wearing makeup in his interviews. At least look pretty when you're [censored] us.

While I haven't read anything official, I've been getting the distinct impression that they are planning on adding some DX11 features, as well as better quality graphics for the PC version. I've seen people refer to comments made by Todd, though I haven't seen the actual comments myself.

I don't understand?! Tod said that Skyrim on PC will support DX11 but would not take advantage of if! That is a fact!
So the only reasonable explanation is that you could implement DX11 features in the creation kit. So lets hope that the modders will create some very cool stuff.
And on the PC, Tod confirmed that we were getting higher resolution textures. So I don't see where the problem is. Just we would have to wait for us or someone to make the game better ( like both previous TES games )

The only DX11 support Skyrim will offer is better performance. Todd Howard specifically made that clear in one of the video interviews that came out recently.

PC will only look better because of AA, AAA, higher resolution textures, etc.

I suspect there'll be a little more than that. I know Civilization 5 was able to add some additional DX11 graphic elements to the terrain graphics, while still keeping it essentially a DX9 game. And even increased performance is something that's going to be an important bonus. Plus if some DX11 features will be used, then that should leave the door wide open to the modding community to add more later on. I also get the distinct impression that they are ahead of schedule with the game, so it's entirely possible that a few things will be added later that they currently aren't planning on.

Todd Howard said "90% of their audience is consoles" (see: http://www.next-gen.biz/news/skyrim-mods-could-reach-consoles)
Making a clear inferior version of the game would probably affect the sales seeing as how they would favor one platform more than the other.
Just curious how would you feel if Bethesda removed the ability to use the construction kit (Creation Kit) and you wouldn't be able to mod the game anymore.

The console versions already are clearly inferior. The very hardware they run on is clearly inferior. Didn't stop Crysis 2 360 from outselling Crysis 2 PC (which had a "press start" screen ... lol ...).

If Beth got rid of the construction kit I would stop buying their games new entirely, as I'm already displeased by how hard BGS panders to outdated platforms in graphics tech and UI. I would wait until they were $20 on sale or something.

Remember, just cause someone has a DX11 card, doesn't mean they can run DX11. WinXP is still pretty widespread out there.

All of which are completely unnecessary in order to get good performance. Even going SLI is nothing but a waste of money and good for only bragging rights. Just one of those 580 is good enough for any game that's going to be out in the near future, and by the time you'll need something more, there will be a new video card that's more powerful than those two 580's combined. If you've got more money than you know what to do with then by all means go with a setup like that, but it's completely unnecessary. Software development has been light years behind the technology simply due to the fact that most people just don't have high end rigs to use it on, and it's not economically feasible to cater only to the technological elite. If a game company doesn't aim for the average in household tech, they're not going to be in business very long.

multimonitor setup requires i SLI the 580's if i wanted to stay with nvidia, which i do. right now im running three 30" 2560 x 1600 monitors set vertical and then hovering above the tri formation i have a 32" hdtv that when i switch to it runs at 1920x1080.

So yeah, also skyrim is catering to consoles/low end PC's hell theres not even that many games out that cater to MID RANGE pc's (460gtx, 4gb'sddr3, quadcore), even though PC's still have a huge market share.

Cryostasis, metro 2033, STALKER, Crysis 1, Arma 2, BFBC2, shogun 2, EvE Online, dawn of war 2 are the only games off the top of my head that you can really stress a system with and i think all of them support DX10 +.

OK, I can see a call for an SLI setup with that arrangement. It sounds like a pretty sweet way to play games. Must be nice to have money to burn, but game companies aren't going to make alot of money catering just to the likes of you. Not very many people can afford to have a rig like that.

I own a PS3, and if PC's get a better version Im not buying Skyrim.

Kidding, of course. Why would anyone on Earth care about others as long as their own potential is being met? If these features were tampered with for PC, who knows, they could have more practice if they were implemented in a future gen of consoles. The only reason I would care was if it raised the price of the game, which it won't.

I suspect significant DX11 support is probably out of the question. DX10 support perhaps, but I fully expect the game will run on DX9, with DX10 support. XP is still the dominate OS, with more copies running than Vista or 7 combined, and it tops out at 9.04c. Aside from that, though; the xbox 360 is a DX9 machine as well. It is far easier to make DX9 the base, and optionally provide support for 10, if you are doing cross-platform stuff.

That said, however; MGE can allow Morrowind (a native DX8 game) to run with DX9 or DX10 by wrappering the calls. With access to the source, it would be possible to allow the code to detect higher levels, and use the better features - but they would be "upgrades" to existing features - not wholly new ones. IOW, expect the water and atmospheric effects to look better, but don't expect DX11 only features, like cloth physics, etc.

That's the rub - until Microsoft and Sony upgrade the consoles, I don't expect DX11 to take off. Console gamers are too important a market to leave behind, no matter how cool the features. Only PC exclusives will fully support the fancier features of later DX versions.

Of course, I could be totally wrong. Bethesda did mention that they have a separate PC dev team, rather than simply 'porting'. However, I can't see them spending a significant amount of effort beefing up the PC version with DX11 unique features that can't be replicated in some way on the consoles.

Again, the game is being designed on the PC, that's the platform the Construction Set works on. Any porting taking place is to the consoles, not the other way around.

Of course, the development is on PC's - I have a hard time seeing someone running a cross-compiler on an xbox... ;)

However, I expect that development has kept the limitations of the consoles in mind from the very beginning. The xbox 360 is still a DX9 machine, which means they are going to be limited to that feature-set on the console port. I have no doubt that the PC version will be "stripped down" to get it on the consoles, but it would be absurd to put a tremendous amount of effort into features that will only work on the PC.

Can you imagine the really devoted fan rage if PC players got cloth physics, while the console players got squat?

Besides, from a purely business perspective, it doesn't make sense. I expect upgraded graphics similar, but better, than MGE on Windows systems. Higher texture resolution, better water physics, better fog, better rain - but nothing earth shattering.

That would be my expectation as well, and judging by the screenshots I've seen I won't be disappointed in the look of the game. Fallout 3 looked better than Oblivion, and Skyrim will look better than Fallout 3. That's good enough for me frankly. It's still too early for full out DX11 graphics, the general public just isn't there yet. It sounds though that they're at least going to leave the door open for the modding community to add it's bit to the look of the game.

those really devoted fans that actually care is less then .00001% prolly the only ones who speak out against it on the forums since the all the others players prolly agree with it due and actually realizing limitations their platform has with common sense or a bit of tech knowledge or has not even read it or hear about it since they do not look at other versions that do not buy.

Again developers are already giving PC players 10-10000x more features that consoles do not get and do we have a raging forum?

Indeed. I fully expect a Skyrim Hi-Res texture pack within days of the game's release - hopefully by Qarl. I just hope we don't need an Oscuro's Skyrim Overhaul as well.

I think it'll take more than a few days. Especially if he can/does make textures with displacement mapping for tessellation.

Surprisingly this is true.

It took Windows 7 until March 2011 in order to pass XP in market share. But I think it has a lot more to do with enterprise users than consumers, especially consumers who game on their PCs would be more likely to have Windows 7 installed than corporations that rely on XP for legacy applications.

Can Qarl actually turn something like that around that quickly? We've been waiting ages for someone to create a complete texture pack for FNV.

I hope Bethesda takes a cue from Bioware in this and releases an official hi-res texture pack.

Qarl's really slowed down the load times for Oblivion, especially when combined with lots of other mods. Bioware's official DA2 texture pack did not impact load time for me.

As a pc gamer i just want these two things

DX11 shaders NOT ACTUALLY BEING USED OR ANYTHING but still have them there for MODDERS to access.

Multi monitor support.

the mod tools to work.

AND that is all.

Everything else can be modded.

Mods have endless possibilities but I am not just talking about those, and im including higher graphics in that either.

A few examples.

BC2/BF2 BC2 consoles had 24 player servers PC had 32 player servers. BF3 PC will have 64 player servers while consoles will still have 24. EA forums are not exactly OMG WHY CANT WE HAVE THIS!! because when that is asked people on both sides PC and console players explain why

Call of Duty Blops and Crysis 2 will be releasing mod tools soon as well for PC which were announced before the game released.

Sims 3 on console is nothing like PC versions its actually just about ~25% of it.

there are more examples but ya its too long of a list

The only thing I personally have not seen on console games today but on PC games and is completely do-able and devs say "Are too complicated for the fan base" is a Server Browser for Multiplayer games, match making blows.. and SB has been done in previous games.

It all comes down to hardware. The consoles just can't handle it. Whether its creating mods, having more players in a multi-player game, having better graphics, etc. It makes SENSE to give the PC versions of games things like these. If developers ONLY developed for the lowest common factors (consoles), technology would progress very slowly.

Mods do have endless possibilities. But the players have to make those. The CS is just a stripped down engine, which is already there to make the game.
