Thoughts On Lonesome Road

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 5:17 am

This is obviously a spoiler, so if you do not wish to have the Lonesome Road ending revealed to you, don't read any further down the page.

Over the last few months on the forums, I have heard a lot of opinions on Lonesome Road over the forums and etc, and some of them good, some of them bad.

My thoughts? I think it was a wonderful DLC. It sums up the courier's story very well and also inserts a very intense ending into Fallout New Vegas. It is hardly an interactive DLC, because there are only two NPC's you can speak to, (Ulysses and ED-E). Although, the several chats that you encounter with Ulysses surely make up for this fact.

I think Ulysses has a great story and is very genuine, as well as an intense character. He also has an AMAZING voice actor. I enjoyed talking to him and listening to his philosophies and opinions over the different factions/civilizations, and many of his theories shape my opinion on the main factions.

I also think that the Divide has an amazing landscape, and for people who are tied up in the Old World and want to see it come back (*cough* Mr. House fans *cough*) The environment was truly breathtaking. From Hopeville to the very edge of the divide where you catch up with Ulysses I applaud the designers.

ED-E has a remarkable story, and even though he is only a divide-made clone of the actual ED-E companion, I grew attached to him as the story went on and could not bring myself to sacrifice him to stop the missiles. (I really hope he gets to see Whitley again)

If you are also very involved in combat gameplay, this is an excellent DLC because the Marked Men/Deathclaws truly are a challenge and are very numerous throughout the divide (ESPECIALLY on Very Hard). The Courier's Mile is definitely one of the most difficult encounters I have ever entered in Fallout 3/Fallout New Vegas.

The final confrontation with Ulysses is quite intense, (you are in for a hell of a fight, regardless if you choose to side with him or kill him). I always side with him at the end of my Lonesome Road play-throughs, so I end up fighting by his side against the army of Marked Men. After the ending, I felt an enormous amount of sympathy for him, after all the Legion had put him through, (you find out a lot about him after collecting all of his tapes) and I was glad that I could continue to visit him and collect campfire recipes/useful advice.

After I left the Divide and saw the explosion to the left, (The Legion), I listened to his holo-tape and collected his duster/the courier duster and old glory. After the explosion was gone, I also noticed the two graves sitting side-by-side. Whether Obsidian planned for this to have any significance, it did for me, because I thought this represented the Courier 6 and Courier 7 (Myself and Ulysses). All-in-all, it was definitely my favorite DLC and I think its a very important to play if you can afford it.

What are you guys' thoughts on this DLC?

I loved Lonesome Road for many of the reasons you mentioned, and the only problem I had with it was the fact that it gave a back story (albeit a vague back story) for the Courier, and while this doesn't interfere with RPing too much, there are some RPing scenarios were this back story would interfere with one written by the player.

I'm wondering whether you ever did Lonesome Road with the independent Vegas dialogue (requires 100 speech skill to get all dialogue) I found that ending to be the most satisfying when it comes to the Courier and Ulysses agreeing with each other and I found the dialogue to be the most rewarding and informative about Ulysses motives.

I like Lonesome Road, Ulysses was interesting (although he was confusing at first with his philosiphical way of speech) and ED-E's backstory (and the tie in to F3) was very well done IMO.

I did like the enemies even if I felt that the Marked Men seemed a little out of place.

But overall I found it to be good.

I liked it, it's not my favorite NV DLC but I enjoyed the premise and the conversations with Ulysses and ED-E 2.

In the past few months, I've actually played Lonesome Road with every faction and fully read the dialogue on each.

Ulysses disses on your faction up until the end, regardless of which one it is.

Legion: He believes that you cannot truly be of the Legion if you are a man of the west, and he also believes the Legion will turn on itself and die when it reaches california (this part is probably true)
NCR: He hates it more than the rest of them. He calls them a "tribe of children", growing without structure.
Independence: He states that you believe in nothing
House: He believes that Mr. House is an old world ghost and is becoming a bit too powerful for his comfort.

All in all I think out of the four he hates Mr. House the least. Or at least that's what I took from it.

I loved ED-E and found Ulysses to be verbose and annoying...I understand wanting to make a philosophical opponent but it was a little overkill for me.

Liked it too, one couldn't possibly oversee the massive usage of FO3 assets, though. Had a *very* CW-like feeling at times.
ED-E has a remarkable story, and even though he is only a divide-made clone of the actual ED-E companion, I grew attached to him as the story went on and could not bring myself to sacrifice him to stop the missiles. (I really hope he gets to see Whitley again)
Loved him, too. Still, couldn't bring myself to justify another nuclear inferno for a clone of the real ED-E

The Courier's Mile is definitely one of the most difficult encounters I have ever entered in Fallout 3/Fallout New Vegas.
Did not play on very hard, and found that LR was somewhat less hard than OWB. The Lobotomites were more of a pain than the Marked Men(I think this is due to the weaponry used. A lot of the Lobotomites were using Hunting Rifles and hit me hard from miles away, while most of the Marked Men carried stuff like Gatling Lasers, Arc Welders or Brush Guns) and the Nightstalker packs were more annoying than the Tunnelers to me. This probably due to ED-E who usually drew their attention, allowing me gun'em down with relative ease. The ride in the lift, as well as the cave I solved with the Protonic Inversal Axe. The DCs were pretty mean, but could be taken out from a distance. The Couriers Mile was *very* fun though. Got bum rushed by pretty much everything at once that was in there after I disposed off the first 2 DCs. It gave me a good reason to finally pull all registers in terms of chem usage, and showed me what a fully upgraded Red Glare is capable of.
The final confrontation with Ulysses is quite intense, (you are in for a hell of a fight, regardless if you choose to side with him or kill him). Did the same thing, never felt like killing him, he doesn't really give you a valid reason for it.
All-in-all, it was definitely my favorite DLC and I think its a very important to play if you can afford it.
I found it to be a very enjoyable DLC, albeit a bit too linear and short to make it a contender for the title of "favorite". That goes to OWB.

Are you talking about Indy or House influence?

I found Lonesome Road enjoyable, but I especially liked it's landscape. It's different than Mojave and reminds me of real Wasteland. My favourite DLC award goes for Dead Money though.

Lonesome Road was one of two DLCs I really wanted, the other being Honest Hearts. Now I also want Dead Money but yeah.

I liked Lonesome Road mostly because it kept me interested. The first time I saw a tunneler I was like 'OH MY -' tried to sneak around it.. failed.. but killed it with a flamer just a few seconds after prevoking it. Then, there always was the signature Marked Men. Hard bastards to kill, ghouls who could use guns.. rocket launchers.. were snipers.. HAD STEALTHBOYS. I mean, the place being filled with warheads and radiation was enough, but then you come across a ghoul who apparently had some form of intellegence in order to use a gun, a rifle, as well as regenerate health when around radiation. Let alone when they used Stealth Boys. Deathclaws as long as I kept my Anti-Material Rifle's ammo high (which was relativly hard to do seeing how the gun some how consumes costful bullets) they was typically easy to kill. Especially when you like to jump onto things and watch them scurry around you cause you can see eye-to-eye with them for once.

Then, Ulysses... I never collected all his tapes, but (Which I'm not sure yet if it allows) I want to go back and just 'em down as well as the rest of the warheads.. Could be difficult, but I should survive.. as long as I keep my trusty Anti-MAT. Rifle with me.

Other then that, I'd just like to glare from the top ledge when you come in from Canyon Wreckage to the Divide.. just glare at that for a little while. Astonishing.. a lot like Skyrim that part, just a bit more apocalyptic. Just to examine the vibrent hues of the lights at night in the sky in Skyrim was.. interesting.

As for ED-E, seeing how he did get over rided, but still zapped me, I let him stay in the cage. Ironically, that didn't matter much, I still had my original ED-E at base. He was all I needed, not some fony. x)

I always enjoy siding with ulysses since its like the two best fighters in the wasteland taking down an army. I also enjoyed the ending since im with the ncr it reminded me of an action movie where you have two elite agents from opposite sides where one has left his side and tried to blow up the others out of revenge, but before he can he sees the error of his ways and turns good. I didnt shoot any nukes (even though i wanted to) because even though i love ncr and hate the legion, there are still a lot of good people in the legion that have their minds poisoned or are enslaved, plus i would hope mankind learned its lesson the first time

That.. was really wise of you.

Nether the less, I still nuked the NCR. x) Just an old reminder to those whom forgot the devastating power the Courier had in control of. x)

Honest Hearts? ...ew.

Old World Blues and Dead Money definitely, with Lonesome Road coming up in third place RIGHT behind Dead Money.

Nuking the Legion is pretty much the ideal way for House/NCR, while nuking both for Indy and nuking NCR for Legion.

Nuked the NCR for Legion.

As well as here would be my little order of things;

- Lonesome Road

- Dead Money

- Honest Hearts

- And that new one with the talking sinks and electronics as well as need to do something or another with your brain. :/

I loved doing the tests in X-13 and X-6, not to mention all of the different science labs.

The robot scientists (Klein, 0, 8, Mobius, Borous, Dala,) are just so like-able IMHO.

The reason I like Old World Blues?

"I believe in the power of science, but the weakness in man."

All I got to say about that. Fallout makes it clear - Science - no matter how it is used, devastates in some way shape or form. Rather it be nuclear or simply a gun.

People forget that everything is science, rather it be weapons, bombs, or a toaster.

What segregates a Toaster from a Nuclear weapon non-scientific wise is simply one doesn't explode. Toasters can still hurt people. Via leave a fork in it and touch it and it burns.. it bloody hurts x.x

What I'm getting at is the subject; Science, is and can be used to kill or damage people. Sometimes, by accident, other times on purpose, other times.. even the littlest of things such as a toaster if doing something right can hurt you.

Thats off topic though sadly.. so.. back to topic.

I mostly loved Lonesome Road because the challenges and Ulysses' background. x)
