4 vs 8 Threads

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 9:48 pm

Do you think Fallout 4 will take advantage of CPUs with more than 4 threads? I ask because I am debating between Core i7 2600 vs Core i5 3570 for my LG1155 mobo. Many games in the past show negligible improvement with hyperthreading but the recommended specs suggest an i7.

Nobody has played the game yet on PC, so we can't tell you.

However I have every confidence that my I5-3570 will run this game just fine.

I doubt seriously any video game would use more than 4 threads even if programmed for multi-threading. It is possible the Pip-Boy app may utilize a different thread (not that it will be doing much other than passing data back and forth).

My old system is a I5-3570, with my GTX-970 never had any issues with any of my nodded games though I do think the CPU was bottlenecking somewhat.

Look at my SIG, been playing my new system for a couple weeks now.

Going from stock settings which is beyond the rec. to OC @ 4.8Ghz stable I definitely get a video boost, at least that's what benchmarking says lol and what I see gaming. Even @ stock 4.0Ghz and ram setting games look fine.

Whether it'll take advantage we'll see. Or will we have to edit config thread to avoid crashes who knows lol...

Gstaff has posted an i7 is what Bethesda recommends.

Why let budget stand in your way? Go i7 and never look back or feel regret!

Although, if the game really utilises 4 cores strongly, then would having hyperthreading available maybe help to avoid background processes from getting in the way? It seems that way to me, but I'm not sure how intelligently Windows handles threading.

I believe the consoles both have 8 cores, so if the game is optimised to use those efficiently (and uses fewer cores inefficiently) it may well do best with at least 4 cores + hyperthreading.

Does anyone know how much load the PS$ and Xbox One OS'es put on their processing cores, and how this relates to the sort of load Windows takes (while playing a game, of course).

I'm betting an i5 will do just fine. Fairly sure my 3570k will do well.

I am really looking forward to hearing from the i5 and i7 owners once we get some time with the game. I enjoy those type of discussions as much as game play does that make me weird?

in the past I haven't seen any one game that take advantage of hyperthreading much. It is mainly if you run several programs at once, which I usually do :P One can hope though! Will be able to tell tomorrow :)

An i5 chip (4core/4thread variant of course) will be just fine. There aren't any games by itself that take real benefit of those extra threads. Even The Witcher 3 touted an i7 CPU for recommended, but surprise surprise...i5's of the same architecture and speed performed mostly the same. I'd expect the same here.
