My three things that should be better than in the other TES

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 6:21 am

Looking over all the stuff listed and discussed, I am fine with most of it. PC Modders are always better at creating content than developers (who have deadlines) so as long as there is a construction set things will be good. Spell making being gone is tough to handle, but not that tough..

But there are THREE things in all Bethesda games that simply must be improved.

-Voice Acting. It's not the quality, I think all of the actors they use are superior to every other company except Bioware (who are the kings of in-game voice/cinematics and have been for years). It is the quantity. It seems Bethesda, being a smaller company and with a limited budget (as opposed to the huge budget SWTOR is getting) use about 10 actors. It was depressing hearing that same guy do every male Orc Voice in the game (he was great though). I love voice overs, but please use more actors than the usual Bethesda 8.

-Animations. This is a sore spot on Bethesda's record. For some reason they can create exceptional environments, but the actual character/mob animations (and interactions with that environment) are really, really bad, Morrowind had the population with bizarre walking problems, Oblivion was a little better with the NPC animations but the PC Character animations were so bad that you almost had to download mods just to make it look like a recently made game, Fallout was a bit better but they were still clunky (especially the running and jumping animation of the PC). I don't know why this continues to pop up with every Bethesda game, but please up the quality.

-Spell Animations. Another sore spot. Quite frankly, they are bad...nintendo 16 bit bad. It's like they have all the best people working on the world graphics but suddenly forget the animations and just put in a bunch of third rate stuff.

Fix those three things, or heck even two, and I will be happy. I will buy the game regardless, but depending on PC Modders for better character animations and spell graphics should really not be happening in 2011.

I'm pretty sure that all three of those things have been addressed by Todd Howard (in podcast and magazine interviews) as elements that they are definitely looking to improve.

I will be happy no matter what, and will still buy the game. In response to your three things:

- Voice Acting: I agree with you. It seemed that for every race there were only to actors. One for the Male's and one for the Female's. When you are walking around in real life, you meet very few people who have a similar sounding voice. It should be the same way in Skyrim. Not a deal breaker if they don't make any changes, but it could be improved.

- Animations: Not really much to say here, except for I agree with you. NPC's do look "clunky" and there actions could be adjusted.

- Spell Animations: Most of the spells (if not all) should have different effects and appearances. I think that it would really add to the depth of the game.

Voice acting is difficult by the sheer amount of NPCs that Bethesda has in their games but i think it was mentioned they are working on it.

Animations are being improved using Havoc Behavior software.

Spells are being made more unique. This probably translates into better animations as well.

This indeed. So OP, you should feel happy then :P

They have addressed all of your issues. There will be more voice actors all around. The animations will use Havok Behavior, one of the best on the market. And Spells will feel more unique and fluid. Certain spells even have extra abilities, like you can turn fire damage into a flamethrower rather than simply throwing fireballs.
