Alright, this is purely theoretical, but..
Say you all of a sudden woke up one day, and instead of being in your bed, you wake up on the ground right outside the gate to Vault 101.
All you have is the clothes on your back (most probably PJs), a Pip-Boy on your wrist, obviously the knowledge you've gained from playtime, and lets throw in a 10mm Pistol with 2 clips.
Now, you don't have to find your father or anything, there are no quests. Just picture yourself to be there, Its hot, barren, dangerous, and unfamiliar.
You stand up, and take a good look of your surroundings. What would you do from this point onwards?

Really? Knowing what I do about the Wasteland? First thing I would do is poop my pants!

Wake up,
crap and piss myself,
cry,
notice that 10mm pistol is starting to look real friendly,
realise I'm being an idiot,
get to Megaton as fast as I can,
get some clothes (I sleep in the buff, and even if I didn't, who wants clothes covered in Number 1 and Number 2?),
rat Burke out to Simms,
try and persuade Simms to let me be a guard,
spend almost all of my caps at Moriarty's on booze and Nova,
get ghoulified from all the radiation in the whisky,
wander on over to Underworld,
join Quinn and kill any bigoted bastards who cross my path,
fix one of the numerous military trucks,
use said truck to get to the New California Republic,
live until I die.

You simply have to improve your reactions. It can be stopped, and Lucas thanks you afterwards. Just make sure to shoot Burke (in VATS) as soon as you see him begin to take out his weapon.

I tried on my latest play-through. When I attacked Burke, everyone in the saloon begins attacking me. Like I did something bad. I reloaded and tried again, this time waiting until his bar on the compass turns red. It never does. He just clips The Sheriff and walks out smooth as [censored], no one says a word to him. He's probably humming "I Shot The Sheriff".. And no one gives the smallest [censored]...

Oh well, I'll try again.

Haha, I know it's crazy, right? Yet if you 'accidentally' take a pencil, you're given the death penalty.

And you could try shooting the gun out of Burke's hand; that'll give Simms to react and shoot him down.
