Thrown Weapons

Post » Mon Oct 12, 2009 8:48 am

We all know the effectiveness of the AER14 Laser Rifle, the satisfying BOOM, Headshot from your Anti-Materiel Rifle, the revving of a Chainsaw (OF DOOM). We've wielded Thermic Lances (Take THAT Skywalker!), savored the smoke trails of Annabelle's missiles (It's raining men! Halle- Oh, and women. And everything else.), went a little firebatty with our warm toasty Flamers. We've even used humble weapons like the Humble Cudgel (pardon the pun), played catch with Grenades (Here.. CATCH!!) and plugged things full of lead with the Avenger. But now, I put forward a question to all of you.

Does anyone even use Thrown Weapons anymore?

P.S. Those that use Throwing Knife Spears in Dead Money don't count. I mean, you people probably only used it in Dead Money only.

Simply not effective or common enough.

True. Personally, I did not even use ONE throwing weapon at all during the first playthrough, no thanks to my inferior melee skills.. It was only halfway into my second playthrough that I decided to use them.

I really dig the throwing animations, and would love to use them more (Hell, probably even make a Legion build centered around throwing weapons) - It's just a shame they're a bit rare to come across.

Not to mention pricey, for one-use weapons. A major beef for me is that few of the Mojave's merchants even stock throwing weapons, and those who do stock only a very limited amount. I would buy throwing weapons by the bundle if they allowed me to. I love the animation when I do get a killing headshot on anything with a well-placed spear though.

Had an idea once of using thrown weapons and the poison. Never got around to trying it so I can't even say if it'll work.

It'll work. Not entirely worth it since you have to poison each and every thrown weapon after each and every throw, which really takes you out of the game having to bring up your pip-boy so often. Against one enemy it'd be fine.

Oh it works, alright. It works. Tried it on the Legendary Deathclaw, while cloaked. Hit him with 3 hatchetfuls of Bleak Poison, got him down to a few silvers of health. Blew him away with Mercy.

I don't think I've ever thrown even so much as a single weapon, even with my melee specialist. Too ineffective, rare and expensive, as has been said.

Did and do.. I find them very useful.
However the lack of them in a vanilla game is disconcerting, I'd I find them more often than some users I've heard from.
I use all of them, however spears are more common, but knives are my favourite.

Throwing knifes are holdout weapons so combined with poisons could make a good stealthy assassination tools in restricted areas. It's just that the only place I can think of where that would be useful is trying to save Benny without getting gang-banged by ballistic fists.

I have randomly used like maybe 5 throwing spears over my total time playing the game. That's it. Not even grenades. I'm 100% bullets.

Where do you find this "reasonable supply"?

I would assume the Throwing Spear would be the only one with a "Reasonable supply" because you can merc a group of Legionaries nearly anytime you want, where as opposed to the throwing knife, you have to be at the right place at the right time to buy it.

Please, do go on?

Every 3 days I believe ol' Mick n' Ralph will always restock.

I wanna known where the spear merchant is.

As far as using them, I am attempting to on my explosives melee character. Kinda of hard to use them casually cause, for reason others have stated above.

How come we can't just craft a throwing spear?

Sure if you are the type who would kill NPC for supply. Throwing knife isn't as rare as you make it out, but rather common for all general vendor.

Another significant trait of throwing knife is that it is a conceal weapon which you can carry into casinos.
