Thumbnail viewer in vista

Post » Thu Nov 19, 2009 9:17 pm

Hi, I was wondering if somebody could recommend me a good dds codec program that would let me see DDS images in windows explorer. I heard Fast Picture Viewer is good. Any others that you guys use?
Btw, I'm not refering to 3rd party software like IrfanViewer. I have that already and I use it for other advanced stuff.

If you download the GIMP and the DDS plug-in then right-clicking on a dds file will show you a http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/4205/thumbnailviewer.jpg.

Well, I've downloaded FastPictureViewer and DDS Thumbnail viewer by Nvidia and SageThumbs and I get this in my explorer:

I like what I see but somehow I can't get DDS images in the "preview pane" on the right. I know it may seem like overkill since I can see the dds image in the thumbnail layout and in the "detail pane" at the botton. But I'm curiuos WHY I can't see DDS in the "Preview pane". Does somebody who knows why?

I am pretty sure the preview pane is just an attached version of windows photo viewer. It doesn't support DDS.

interesting. One thing I noticed that if you download those 3rd party explorer-like file managers(Total commander, UltraExplorer, Q-dir, CubicExplorer) some will alter the codec formats because they have their own built-in image viewer. I had some problems yesterday cause i downloaded three free file managers programs to test out the way they display the images. With the appliccable codecs i downloaded, I was getting in these file managers DDS in one but not in the other; TGA in one but not in the other. You know what I mean? UltraExplorer was the only one that showed all the images but somehow it cancel some dds views in my regular Windows explorer. I believe is because some of these file managers(which are way better than windows explorer, btw) alter the registry, thus, creating all of these inconsistencies in image views. You guys should check those file managers they can save you alot of time in sorting and managing your Morrowind files and what not. I think is importat, though, that you should use a file manager that doesn't clash with your windows explorer or another file manager that you might have.

Kind of. I use IrfanView for more in-depth "personal" view of DDS/TGA/BMP, etc. But my "workspace" is in the explorer browser where I sort, name, add details, create links/tabs to your favorite folders, create folders and moving it here and there and much, MUCH more. That's why I was interested in a built-in image viewer that read all the important formats. For convinience sake instead of poping out a third party external software as IrfanView. Here's a pic of my file manager call Q-dir. I can see all the DDS/TGA/BMP, etc. Q-dir Its a free program. In this pic I'm working with 4 folders but I can customize the layout that fits my needs.http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/7111/picqdir.jpg

Btw there are a few image files that I cant see in the file manager. But no problem, i guess. I can always pop out my good'ol IrfanView:)
