Tiered Class System.

Let me explain the Tier system. Now if you played the short lived Tabula Rasa you would have seen a similar system that wasn't very thought out. Lets use an already created class that people would be familiar with, The Hunter.

Now lets say you pick the Hunter for the first 10 or so levels you would be a Hunter. You would have 3-5 spells or abilities to place your talent points. Depending on which abilities you sink your points into it would open up different classes once you reach level 11. Lets say you want to be a ranged player that doesn't care so much about the pet aspect of the Hunter but you like the ranged weapons set. Ok you have placed your 10 talent points into the right abilities and it opens up the next tier at Level 11 for you to become the Marksman. Now you still have a pet but it is not as powerful as the Hunters but your ranged weapon power increases. Now from level 11-20 you have 5 more abilities to sink points into. You place them into the right options again and now you become the Archer. I will add a picture so that you can better get a grasp on this tiered class system. Also this gives the player more classes to become and even further customize themselves. As you can see from the image below the further on the right the more focused on ranged damage you are and the further on the left you are more focused on the pet and its abilities. Maybe the Beast Master gets to have 3 pets but doesn't use the high powered rifles that the Archer(Gunner) gets to play with. The Beast Master is probably more focused on buffing his pets helping their damage output wear the Archer doesn't have a pet and he can unload huge amounts of Ranged damage. Also this would push the class system from the base 8 to something like 62.

i dont know about Tabula Rasa (FPS pvp doesnt interest me, espcialy when you start talking about spells) but this tire system sounds similar to what borderlands had.

you got the basic, 4 classes, with 3 specialties:

to much combat oriented gameplay if you ask me ...
also FO has skill based not class based system (although its mostly semantic in my opinion)

Fallout already has an excellent system called SPECIAL. It gives you just as much freedom as you need and the chance to screw up and build a fubar character. Put in a skill reset mechanism and you got the perfect system for an mmorpg.

really special you say, never heard of i'll have to check this out

anyway reset mechanism =/= avoid making choice regarding your character development, allows you to playing as whatever type is easiest to level then resting and changing to whatever is most fun or most useful in late game... (revert of last level choice can work)

"It gives you just as much freedom" - BS, skill system is exactly the same as class system (especially since a week after the game will be out everyone will use a char generator app) the only difference is that 'skill system' give you the illusion of choice and an option to screw your character if you dont know what a char gen is and lack the mental capacity to plan ahead.

Not quite, the developers can't make a class for every possible combination of skills. If you replace the skills with shiny icons that give you skills like "Big Weapons 1", "Big Weapons 2" the context is the same. If someone lacks the mental capacity to plan ahead character development or is just too bored to do so, then RPGs are not the thing for him. Fallout 1 and 2 became what they are because of the amazing setting, the immersion and their character development system.

i consider this an art knowing how to creating the illusion of choice,consequences,AI... whatever using smart design,scripts,etc..

in this case all this "class for every possible combination of skills" its an illusion, you'll always have the specialized classes the cross classes and the stupid classes you usually pick out of ignorance.

take special for example, first time you play you choose what you think is the best pick for your game style (which is usually not) and only form you next play through after you understand better how the game works and balanced you can pick specialized class to maximize your experience from it (you know all those dialogues that only a char with high int can get etc or that you dont need more than 5 strength considering all the upgrades etc)

so eventually every skill based system will be summed up in a nice little chart and everyone will build their specialized build (a.k.a classes) according to it, you as well, unless you think that guessing what the best stats for you gameplay style is better, in which case after wasting a month or so you'll understand you missed many special easter eggs for those specialized class and restart instead of trying out a whole build completely or will be annoyed by getting pawned by a 10 years old snout who did used the chart...

That's the point of what I'm talking about, some people might not be bothered if a 10 yo pawned them, simply because they don't care about PvP. I agree with you that most people will follow premade builds but I believe that many others would like to have the option to fine tune their character according to their own ideas.

so how about getting pawned in PvE boss area because you where not smart enough to use the "specialized skills" and all this fine tuning its exactly what the class/sub class system is about, only 25/50/75/100 skill points its going to be called novice/advance/professional... and there is no fine tuning outside your class (if you want to make the specialization) because eventually you need to balance those skills as well to avoid super heroes builds...

dont take me wrong, i love fallout skills system, i am just saying that its more clever design then anything else ;)
