Time to Ditch the Minigames?

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 7:04 am

I'd say 19 out of 20 follow this and then I'll run into an odd one.

Say I guess CAKE and it says 3 match.

The remaining choices will be BOOK, NUTS, NUKE, DOGS, FISH

I'm sitting here thinking "I'm not smart enough to figure out which of those words shares three letters with CAKE..."

I start guessing and turns out the correct answer was BOOK because BOOK obviously shares 3 letters with CAKE.

Yeah. I've run in to those as well. It's rare, but, sometimes...

My favorite was "trophy" (from last night). 3 right! It was "thongs". I'm guessing they mixed up the "h" and the "r" symbols.

Don't worry, I don't understand half of it either lol. It's an enjoyable line of work to be in, and it really is a fascinating field. I'm still early in my career though, so hopefully I'll get to do some work in some of the more romanticized fields of physics later on down the line. My current research is mostly in ultra low temperature condensed matter.

I seem to hit an occasional terminal that doesn't quite match up either, but I'd say the method I described works for me about 95% of the time. I think there are basically some that just 'slipped through the cracks' or are just somehow a little buggy. Things like that aren't entirely unheard of in Bethesda games lol

Yes let's take away features that don't have anything to do with killing. God forbid we do anything else that aim, shoot reload, repeat.

I like extorting more caps and lying to those that trust me. Red has always been my color.

I have also run into terminals occasionally that were not solvable (short of guessing lucky) because the info was contradictory. But since there is no penalty for failing... Just wait ten seconds and get a new set of words.

I'd like the option to skip them in favor of a skill check.

About 70% of the hacking puzzle is in picking your first word.

I have never seen a case where it reported the Matches incorrectly, not in FO3, FNV, nor FO4. I think the people that claim this mis-interpret what "Matches" mean.

I think one common misconception is that matches are contains x number of same letters.
Matches mean you have the right letter in the right position.

CAKE

KEYS

BOOK

NUTS

DOGS

NUKE

FISH

If these are the options your first pick should be: NUTS

Because in the set, NUTS match ...s on 3 words and NU.. on 1 word

Matched on 1 your left with (you've matched on ...s, and Nuke would have matched 2)

KEYS

DOGS

Match on 2 your left with

NUKE

There is no possilbe Match on 3

Match on 0

CAKE

BOOK

FISH

edit: to include match 0

I'm just miffed by the long time it takes for the terminal hacking screen to load up. It seems to take forever now.

At least I've just grabbed the highest lockpick rank so I don't have to keep re-using bobby pins.

Anyone watch Conan O'Brien's clueless gamer bit for fallout 4. I loved how he said that he hated the hacking, kept saying they were making him stop playing to do his taxes on a commodore 64.

Fine smarty pants. I will post it on video the next time I run in to it. Sheesh. What, we're all lying?

After 5 run throughs, I can say with some authority that, out of the hundreds of terminals I have hacked, there have not been more than, perhaps a dozen of such incidences. Honestly, I don't think mixing up an "r" and and and "h" is that big of a deal. And it is always two letters that have a very similar appearance: an "o" and a "q", a "d" and a "b" or a "t" and an "i", etc.

No I don't think your all lying. I've never seen it, and as I stated I think that alot of people don't understand what Matches mean. Back in FO3, it took me a while to figure that out too. That a matched letter was not only that the letter exists in the answer, but it's in the correct position.

But definatly if you have a screen shot/video of it excellent, I would love to see it.

I HATE the mini games. I am just shocked that Bethesda would still keep it in this being the 3rd time doing a Fallout game. Either someone with power is blind and wants things done their way and don't care what we think, or a lot of people like/love but are quiet on it, or Bethesda can't come up with anything new anymore and are stuck in the past from Oblivion days and Can't do anything new. Rehash, rehash.

It's one thing, if it not broke, don't fix it, but I thought these mini games are broke and needs to be fixed because all I know when I see a lock or especially a terminal my fun stops for those few minutes.

I like em - though perhaps hacking could be a bit more inventive and not just a word search.

I like the lockpicking, and the hacking. Really I do. No lie.

I wouldn't mind a different variation thereof the next go around.

The problem is, is how do you do locks differently when everyone is using locks that we have in real life?

You couldn't mix it up like Two World's lockpicking, too esoteric to resemble real life locks.

The burdens of working with modern world tropes.

I very, very definitely understand exactly how hacking works, and this happened to me over the weekend. This was with my Prime character who has a 9 in Intelligence, Valentine's perk and Hacker of 3. After dropping the duds there were only 3 choices left, and I have 5 guesses so I typically just spam guesses at that point. The first word I picked was not the right answer, but said "Likeness=1". The problem - and what made notice and remember - was that the word actually had NO matches in common with the remaining two words! Like in your example if I had DOGS, NUKE, and FISH remaining and pick DOGS to have it say "Likeness=1" I have also seen it under-report Likeness values such as if the correct answer is REALM and I pick TEARS only to have it return "Likeness=1."

These hacking words are almost certainly just lookup tables, and what we're seeing is the rare typo.

It's the hacking I hate, purely because it's just not fun. I like mini games and I like puzzles. I know all the tricks to help figure it out (whether it's eliminating duds, finding common word traits or refreshing tries) and it doesn't help. I hate it. Maybe because it's the third time around with the same damn mini game.

I play on console, so I might be stuck with it. But if we get a mod that alters it or flat out eliminates it, I'm grabbing it right away.

I don't mind the mini games, they seldom take very long. But I don't like the new hacking, where you basically can't be locked out, no matter what you do. For those who don't like the hacking game, and on PC, there is already a mod out, that leaves only the correct answer on screen when you "hack" it. Also hacking perk rank 4 is useless (same with lockpicking rank 4 for that matter since there are plenty of bobby pins, both found and from vendors if need be)

Ohh, I break bobby pins routinely. But that's because my keyboard is so sensitive, that the cylinder just twist very fast :D But have never run out of bobby pins yet anyways, so all good.

I like the mini games, but if they took them out I wouldn't run to the forums screaming about beth ruining the game or dumbing it down, or turning it into a shooter. Though if they did remove them, I'm sure we'd see plenty of threads like that

I would. I mean, gotta join in whining about stuff that only affects me and my opinion and making everybody else's life miserable with my complaining.

Why would the forum be any different from real life?

Have you actually tried that in Fallout 4? Every time I have tried to hack a terminal or pick a lock while I was taking damage, I get knocked out of the mini-game.

Lockpicking is something I would like to see either fixed or fundamentally changed. I am one of the fortunate ones who cannot see the lock or the position of the bobby pin when you try to turn it. I have never put a perk into lockicking, so I can't even attempt to pick a lock higher than "novice". I haven't put perks into it simply because picking locks on novice under my circumstances is so difficult and takes so many bobby pins, I doubt I would ever succeed at higher levels anyway.

Hacking on the other hand I don't mind. I have no idea what everybody is talking about regarding brackets and parenthesis, I just solve the puzzle. Even at that, it's so simple I rarely get locked out. I find that as abig a pain as it was, I liked FONV hacking better where the thing didn't reset until you hit a new level.

Aside from that, I have to wonder just what the pop boy is good for... It would fun to plug the pip boy into a terminal and use it in some fashion to hack the system, eh?
