In My Time Of Dying

Post » Mon Apr 25, 2011 8:06 am

you run into log trap and get thrown against the wall and die in first person with lots of crunching noises since your bones are all broken now. as you lie dying you can hear your companions

companion 1 "WTF! dammit this guy svcks. now we have to wait for him to reload. of all the people that could have bought our copy we get stuck with this loser."

companion 2 "quick check his pockets and grab some gold coins before he comes back.........no one ever knows exactly how much gold they have on them."

companion 1 "next time he dies i vote for teabagging him."

 If this is what OP meant by "death-jokes", I really do like to see something like it in the game (But only with a "fun-option" activated - as opposed to the "hardcoe-option").

Nice Bob Dylan reference. (If that is in fact referring to the Bob Dylan version of the song....)

After being killed, I would want the 1st person camera falling to the ground and fading to b&w, then standard "quit or reload". No cutscenes, texts or anything fancy.

I would prefer it goes to the third person camera so you can watch yourself fall or whatever when you die, and while you fall an opaque menu is in the middle of the screen asking you to reload or quit.

Realistic Death:when i die in 1st person this is what i think should happen :you fall to the ground in first person (whichever way (on your face, side, or back), depending on how you were hit). Your vision narrows to a pinpoint before going black. after that, the hearing finally goes. That's it. It'd all add an extra 3 seconds, but it'd be cool and kind of creepy (in a good way).

There is no possible way to make a realistic death in a video game, since no one can verify what exactly a realistic death is. Once you die, you're dead. There is no autosave in life.

This is actually referring to the Led Zeppelin version, which is a cover of Blind Willie Johnson. Bob Dylan covered the same song beforehand and called it "In my time of Dyin'".

so I guess it's a reference to Blind Willie Johnson, but i was thinking about Led Zeppelin's version when i made the title.

I'd rather just die and quickly reload. Continually showing me a cutscene or telling me how terrible I am will get old eventually.

How often do you plan on dying exactly? Lol

People have been revived...

Do they remember their own death scene, because I seem to have missed that documentary apparently.

Edit: That sounds much ruder than I intended, but I can't really think of a way to change it. Too lazy.

Yes they have described the experience. They are many sources on the topic. Most of them describing a floating feeling, bright lights, ringing, tunnel experience, etc. Research says that it's most likely hallucinatory, but doesn't change the fact that it would still work when your character dies as well.

Hmm. Didn't know that. I've heard mostly that people who died and were revived didn't remember anything. I guess I'll take your word for it. Mainly because in order to verify without a doubt, I'd have to die and be revived, which isn't that likely. Although if I do die and I don't remember anything after being revived, I'll come back and post it here. :P

We should get a rare joke upon death with a Trollface.jpg accompanied by a Umad?

Once in a while a joke would be tasteful, not every time I die though.

when you die they should camera zoom the killer and they should have a comment. if a animal killed you should have a god look down apon you and say some comment of how stupid you are.

Well if you were thinking about the Zep version then it is a reference to Led Zeppelin. The Bob Dylan version is what played through my mind when I first read the title.

Please, no. Keep all stupid internet memes/references out of my TES. :swear:

you mean like if you resist arrest and get killed by the guard he would say "you fought the law but the law won".

That's a pretty cool idea. but how would it work? We just reload an earlier save. I would imagine it would be a specified graveyard. i imagine if each player had it's own slot, then everytime you die it adds to the slot, so on all save files on that character, the player graveyard is the same (just as many tombstones).

Instead of graves being a negative thing, it should be kind of cool to see your graveyard grow....
....wait
....i feel somethin'
... it's comin'
A GREAT IDEA:

instead of the jokes/comments/limericks/haikus being right after the death, they could be on the tombstone, and then when you have enough tombstones of the same death-description, you get a kind of "family crypt", which would make the player-graveyard even more interesting

what are the chances though... I wish i had a good PC so i could (learn to) mod...
actually in retrospect, it's more of a "pretty good" idea.

There should be a picture of Todd with a broad toothy smile with a comment bubble saying: "Unfortunately you svck, would you like to try again?"

I like the whole first person death thing, but i think they should have it where it looks like your closing your eyes over the screen, and it goes black that way. Otherwise it looks like ur turning off your TV

i think that would be way too cheesy actually. especially if it "zooms in" on the guard, like what was suggested.

Realistic deaths would definitely fit the new approach to combat Skyrim is going for.

Shouldn't be anything long or tedious though.

I like the 3rd person death concept that there's always been, however, would be great to have a longer scene, say you get to watch your body lying there, maybe being looted by bandits, and only when you click a specific button does the reload save option appear. It was annoying in morrowind/oblivion, where the game would pause and the reload menu show up, sometimes even before your body hit the ground. You need some time to reflect upon what happened rather than simply reloading, it sort of trivializes death when it all happens so fast.

I'm working on a mod for Oblivion that includes readable tombstones. It's not impossible - you can either (1) do a simple background texture and layer your words onto it or (2) use an activator and a simple text box. The latter is less immersive, of course, but allows you to cut and paste text quickly.

My mod currently has around 100ish readable tombstones of various kinds. None for the player character, though. But that would be a rather simple script, too, (like the statue of the player that appears in Oblivion).

But as much as I'm enthralled by this overall thread, um, I tend to get killed a lot. Usually because I rush into things thinking I can handle them. A graveyard full of memorials to my past errors in judgment wouldn't necessarily appeal to me. And someone making silly or whimsical comments while I'm dying is really only going to piss me off.

a realistic first person death would be nice, but after that they should just give you the menu to reload or quit, etc. IMO
