Time for Speech Skill to go?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 1:56 am

I think so. It seems like an outdated mechanics that New Vegas made obsolete, and when you think about it, it doesn't make too much sense. Here's a few scenarios:

Intimidating a person = achieved through Strength or Guns
Persuading someone = Charisma (this would in turn actually make Charisma desirable if more speech test actually depended on it rather than speech
I need mo' money = Barter

My point is New Vegas really got the speech tests right and I'd like to see it removed as a skill to make room for something more interesting.

Speech isn't obsolete, it's Charisma that's becoming obsolete.
And no, Speech should NOT be removed, they removed Traps, Steal and Doctor already, we don't need more skills removed, we need more skills implemented and all skills improved.

I'd say that Speech is one of the most useful non-combat skills in New Vegas, right behind Lockpick and Repair.

... And Science
The reason why I personally don't think Science is as important is because it would be much more difficult to finish a successful playthrough without one of the skills I mentioned. Science is very useful, but I wouldn't consider it as vital.

Getting rid of Speech would be a horrible decision. Speech helps solve problems in a non-violent manner where if it wasn't available I'd have to resort to violence. Speech has a lot of use, unlike in Skyrim, where it's almost useless.

yes try to mack a character whit INT 1-3 and se how far you will come in the game! Speech is the most important skill you have to be able to do any type of role playing!

And sadly we can see the trend in this company that they remove skills and other role-play context and streamline it more and more as a shooota game instead.
Just lock at the progress on skills in TES when the NR off skills have bean half the NR in every new game when it shod be the opposite!

It is hard to say what they will do with the series until fallout 4 comes out. I don't think predicting what fallout 4 will be solely on fallout 3 and a different series is not too smart. And there is some evidence that they won't make it like TES, like making New Vegas, and demanding it be released on such a short notice.

That isn't directed at you, but just a general statement.

If the speach skill goes others like barter or science or survival would have to be built on and expanded majorly

You can finish Vegas without ever putting a point into repair - In Fallout 3 it was a lot more essential though.

- For non-combat scenarios it's pretty useful if you need to disable robots/turret and gain access to rooms locked by a console, and then theres that perk for sneaking behind robots and disabling them

What? Speech got me threw half the game of New Vegas. Hell, high enough speech and you don't even have to fight most of the bosses.

When does the game demand you repair your gun?
I've never came across a time it was mandatory for me to do so - and even at that I could just pick up a better or higher tier weapon

What happens when that high teir gun becoms a.) broken or b.) to timeworthy to kill and reload. It just is right to repair your stuff plus who doesnt want coinshot and jhp rounds.

If something speech should be returned to its former glory, like in first two fallouts, where you were able to survive by speech and running(hostile random encounters and the like)

I actually agree. They could combine charisma with speech. Charisma attribute feels pretty useless now and it would also fix that. Speech skill is pretty useless and stupid and i only pick it to weaken my character.

I think it needa little bit of an improving and expanding on but to remove it would cripple a lot of the rp elements of the game.

It doesn't need to go, it needs to be fixed and brought back to the way it was implemented in FO2.

Heck no. I enjoy the Speech Skill. It paired with Barter and Lockpick help make my 'suave gentleman thief' a real playthrough, which is by and large what my characters are. Any idiot can take a gun and go 'pew pew pew I keel yuz lul'. But it takes balls to approach Lanius and talk him down from a fight with cunning duplicity. >_>

Useless? I'm sorry but did you miss the large amount of oppurtunities to talk your way through a quest? Or did you not notice the fact you can make Lanius back down without having to fight him at all?

I can see it now:

Bullet: ........
PC: [SUCCESS] WAIT! Think about this, do you want to kill me? Or the person that will use you once and throw you away?
Bullet: .......... *turns around and kills the owner*

Ah yes, that line works on bullets. Never works on the ex wives though. Hence I ran from Rivet City. :nope:
