Time scale in Skyrim (with POLL!)

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:16 am

Since there has been some discussion about the time scale that should be in Skyrim I thought there was need for a POLL! Aye, a poll.
I picked a few reasonable choices for this most honourable forum to chose from, feel free to comment any errors or suggestions about it. Feel free to discuss the alternatives and vote!

Let the topic begin!

PS: For those wondering, im on 1:15.

EDIT: Thanks Daetnas for correction, added some other choices for those wanting more choices of things getting faster (!!!). Suggested by Dragonbone.

I chose 1:20. The world would feel too small if you could cross it in a few in-game hours, and this gives you a bit more time to do things in a single day and it plain just feels better to experience the change int ime more often, butnot too much. Was close to choosing 1:15 though.

EDIT: You should add a 1:45 and 1:60 option for those people who are not as extreme as "1 SECOND DAYS!" but still want shorter days than OB/MW (eg. 1 second minutes).

I never really had a prblem with Oblivion's/Morrowind's timescale. However, I went with 1:20. Skyrim is supposedly harder to traverse, so that allows for longer days and nights.

same as oblivion and morrowind. If you slow it too much its hard to explain how a guy trekked across a nation killed a dragon found a magical talisman cleaned out an ruin and ran an errand all in the same day.... you have to consider that your constantly moving which means u get alot done. that wuldnt be possible in real life.

I'd say 1:20, or 1:15

Yeah and with 1:15, it's actually 4 minutes, not 4,5.

I went for 1:4, although now I'm thinking that could be too much

Been using 1:4 since OB. but then i had hunger, thirst, sleep mods and faster timescales would have me constantly eating, etc. anyway its very easy to change via console on the PC.

I picked 10:1, which is a shade faster than the 8:1 timescale I ended up setting both MW and OB at. Ideally, 3 or 4 settings, or a slider, would make a lot more sense than one fixed rate. I can actually picture someone wanting to try something briefly "in real time", but not the entire game. Checkboxes or slider detents at 1:1, 4:1, 8:1, 15:1, and 30:1 might be a good "spread", although I would suspect that the 4:1 would go almost totally unused.

I'd like to see on day equal to 20-40 minutes, leaning towards the latter. While a speedier time frame might make travel more realistic (requiring more days to pass when traveling between locations) I find it hurts the realism overall. If a full 24 hours passes in ten minutes or less you are going back and forth between night and day so quickly it just feels rather abrupt to me and night and day loose value.

Short days would limit NPC scheduling, they'd either have to have very simple schedules or they wouldn't be able to travel very far if they need to complete all of their tasks in five minutes or less. With 10-20 minutes an NPC has far more options, and if they're going to spend most of the day doing one thing it will lend that some weight rather than having someone leave town to harvest and then come back after a minute's work. Even if they're going to a location near their town, or even on the other side of town, they'd likely spend more time traveling than preforming whatever tasks are scheduled.

I also find that longer nights add more atmosphere and tension, if I'm creeping around exposed ruins at night or hunting in the woods I don't want to feel that I can take a breather for a few minutes to grab a drink and it will be bright and sunny when I get back.

I'm good with the Oblivion and Morrowind time scales but I wouldn't mind one second days. :whistling: :bolt:

I think the Oblivion got close but not quite 30 minute was 24h so id say that a 45 minutes should be the day

Oblivion was not too bad, but I would like to see slightly longer days (maybe double at most). It would allow more time for complete NPC schedules (everyone could get in at least 1 if not too meals a day if they could afford it). They need to do this if they implement any kind of sleeping required mode (even if optional)

Ever since I've been playing with T.I.E. for Oblivion, I've thought 1:12 was a good balance. It isn't too fast, nor is it too slow. Currently using 1:12 in New Vegas as well, and I have to say I like it.

So since 1:12 isn't anywhere in the poll, my vote goes to 1:10.

As far as I know, 1:12 was Oblivion's settings. Went too far for my taste though. I usually set it at Set Timescale to 2 or 4. So, 1:2 or 1:4. That works best for me.

The option to change, as Kovacius, mentioned would be interesting. This would be dependent on where I am in gameplay.

As an example, If I am enjoying a drink and some entertainment at an inn, I would want time to be a bit slower there. This would allow me, via the player character to enjoy the ambiance of the inn a more leisurely manner.

For general adventuring, something akin to Oblivion, or maybe just a bit slower would be fine with me.

One thing I do not want, however, is the ability to be fully healed by just "waiting" for 1 hour of game time.
For me, that feature is immersion breaking.

As for sleeping through the night, etc., unless plot/story related reasons exist, that time can pass rather quickly.

For your poll, I selected the 1:30 1 IG hour=2 minutes a la Morrowind/Oblivion option.

I was happy with Oblivion's timescale. If they had to change it though, I'd like time to be a bit slower than it was.

1:10, unless there are seasons; then it would have to be Oblivion's timescale, if we ever want to experience them.

Off topic but... I hope there are seasons, but it seems as if it's not :(
I still hope. Seasons would be awesome.

Seasons would be great, but they would imply a lot of changes (not only texture cosmetic I hope). The player should have some activities that consume much more time (prison, incapacitating diseases?). I voted 1:10

Oblivion had 1 day=48mins. I think this is too short. I think 1 day=1 hour-1.5 hours sounds good.
