IB Timeline Discussion thread #4

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 8:31 pm

Personally, I don't think elephants should even be considered for this. Its a TES RP ultimately, not a boring earth one and if we wanted it so, we would RP somewhere else for one like that. Senche's and Lutemonsters are the closest thing to "elephants" there should be IMO. Unless there is actually elephants in Tamriel but I don't think so? If there is, prove me wrong but until then I think we shoould start focusing on the fact that this RP takes place in a fantasy world, regardless of how much realism we like to add to it. (I only mentioned the elephants because I saw Wooly mention them before hand)

And sorry Verlox about not getting back sooner, I was attempting to beat Halo 1 on Legendary. Needless to say, I just rage quit.

Elephants were in SoS...

However, I just mentioned them. I don't think they'll show up in this one.

Which is something that still boggles me to this day but then again its not my RP so I'm not trying to call anyone out. My main point was that it seems like this TES RP lacks TES elements sometimes.

This RP needs a pointsystem for units instead of a number limit. 1 peasent worth 1 point. 5000 peasents = 5000 points.

1 elephant, 500 points
Ansei, 500 points
Sword singers:, 100 points

etc etc.

Agreed.

I like the fantasy aspect of the RP but battles will not be this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6tA71q5vEQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDeMdjTmKck

Helmetless pretty boys swinging claymores around with one hand doing 20 thousand flips before landing pristinely on their feet in a manner which would snap their ankles. Slender thin ladies leaping 30 feet across a battle field. One thing that gets me in one of those vids, you have the dark elf and light elf or whatever theyre called in the game swinging their words at each other with arms wholly extended at such a distance that it would not even reach the other person. Like you literally did not even need to tire yourself out to raise a sword because the enemy isn't even close enough to hit you. I'm fine with the fantasy aspects of this RP, I just don't want the magic to saturate the realistic feel. In fact magic and fantasy feel more special IMO when they are rare. When some of the people on the battle field have never even seen a mage cast a spell in their life.

Think more like this:

Not completely realistic but a lot more than the above.

Edit: What's wrong with elephants?

Seems reasonable.

Would elephants be allowed in the first battle? I figured I could drop 150 guys and add 5 elephants in there or something along those lines. If elephants were in the army, it would make sense they would be vanguard troops in my opinion.

Yeah five wouldn't be so bad, plus goes with the whole middle east persian, arab feel of the Redguards. Just no heavy armor on them. Some lighter armor.

Just no heavy armor on them.

Then they would be damn shields. Almost invincible minus the joint vulnerability.

Other than that, maybe 25 swordsinger infantry (elite swordsmen). No cannons or anything like that (that wouldn't be vanguard). Everything else will be heavy infantry and shock cavalry.

EDIT:

Wouldn't Elephants scare the hell out of cavalry/infantry?

Actually for this battle the Redguards would probably have more light/raider type troops. Don't make it too difficult. I'm going to have like 200 light cav, 200 slingers, 300 jav infantry, 300 spearmen. Don't make a shopping list. Just something quick to the point, I can post up the sheets and the RP can restart tonight.

I guess that would depend on a few factors.

The only factor I see:

If you've never seen anything as large as a castle wall, big, Grey, with huge tusks coming out the top, trampling anything with indifference...

Well, I'll let you make the decision.

Reason why elephants are unreliable in battle: Large lumbering beast, may be tamed but in confusion of battle will be unlikely that it will be able to tell the difference between friend and foe. Friendly units = squashed. Enemy units = squashed.

Athough sending a few rampaging Elephants covered in barrels of black powder charging at the enemies front line or supply line does have its merits.

I never meant anything like that, for sure and I enjoy the rarity of magick in the IB Timeline but it almost seems like because of the rarity we've given it, people are afraid to use it at all. I don't think any armies from the original RP had a single magick-oriented unit in it, much less one that used magick as a support.

And nothing i wrong with elephants, but I have never heard of them in TES and it seems like they were thrown in due to a lack of creativity and convenience than due to any lore accuracy. But once again, prove me wrong and I really don't have a problem with them.

BM has a point about magic. Vivec lost an entire war against the Remans because he misplaced his mages on different flanks than the ones they were supposed to be on.

Of course, the counter to that: Anvil is a small break-away principality, that while wealthy, probably hasn't had time to set up any sort of mage order other than the local Mages Guild. And the Redguard have never had a strong magical tradition, at all.

Raga actually hate eastern magic.

I say you stick something in the elephant's ass, and it runs in a frontward motion.

http://home.comcast.net/~duncanblack/rotk.jpg No, not really. They aren't that big.

True, and I never fully expected either side to be super strong on the magick side, but still. Anvil would possibly still have members of the MG that could volunteer/sell their services to the city as mercs. Plus in the way that the rich often had the best weapons, tactical knowledge and mounts and what-not (in our world) I always figured a fair of the upper-class folk (in TES) would want to practice magick because it would separate the rich from the poor and that sort of thing?

Not that a think the matter is up for debate.
