I thought the Mages Guild was [censored]? Didn't they die with the Empire?

Unlikely. We're talking one of the biggest businesses on Tamriel here.

That's what happened in the Infernal City. Just after the Empire separated, the Mages Guild was screwed over.

I figure the Mages Guild is more Imperial based and would hate Anvil for declaring independence.

Ugh, I thought we were ignoring the Infernal [censored]. Get it, Infernal [censored]t-y. Its funny what I did there.

Either way, if the Mages Guild is out, that would only mean the practice of magick would be unrestricted to everyone and therefore probably more people would practice it because they don't have to put up with the restraints of the Guild rules, which would possibly even mean mercenaries exclusively devoted to be war-mages for hire, as that sort of thing would probably be frowned upon by the Guild but if its no longer a factor, those kind of people would increase in number.

The mercenaries would, yes. Who gives a damn if the guild doesn't have any power?

But as Solidor said before, we should try not to pull too many mercenaries out of our asses.

I never meant anything like that, for sure and I enjoy the rarity of magick in the IB Timeline but it almost seems like because of the rarity we've given it, people are afraid to use it at all. I don't think any armies from the original RP had a single magick-oriented unit in it, much less one that used magick as a support.

And nothing i wrong with elephants, but I have never heard of them in TES and it seems like they were thrown in due to a lack of creativity and convenience than due to any lore accuracy. But once again, prove me wrong and I really don't have a problem with them.

I don't know who is afraid to use it. One of my main characters, and generally most of my characters are very big magic users. I don't think there is anything inaccurate about elephants and i'm very big on enfusing history from our world into TES because to be honest, and without meaning any insult, the TES world is very very shallow compared to our history if you are to really study it. So anything to enrich it I am all for.

BM has a point about magic. Vivec lost an entire war against the Remans because he misplaced his mages on different flanks than the ones they were supposed to be on.

Of course, the counter to that: Anvil is a small break-away principality, that while wealthy, probably hasn't had time to set up any sort of mage order other than the local Mages Guild. And the Redguard have never had a strong magical tradition, at all.

Yea mages can be vital and I have no issue with them playing such a role. But armies have lost due to their misplacing of cavalry reserves or archers or any other military branch.

Here you go.

(900) (5)

5 War Elephants - Light Mail

50 Stros Slingers (10 on each elephant)

Naphtha Throwers 50

Working in groups of 10, these men are armed with Naphtha filled clay jars which they hurl into the enemy bursting on impact and sending fire and shards into the enemy ranks. Their expertise with alchemy has earned these men enough pay to buy themselves mail robes as well as a small steel buckler and matching scimitar.

50 Cataphracts - Steel Mail, Steel Lance, Steel circle shield, Sidearm varies

200 Heavy Cavalry - Iron Lamaller, iron spears, wooden rectangle shields, sidearm varies

150 Mamluk Light Cavalry - Light leather lamellar, scimitar, javelins

50 Tabardariyya

These fierce troops act as both elite guards of the nobility and as the decisive shock infantry force of the army. They are armored in heavy lamellar and mail armor carrying amongst other personal weaponry a fierce two handed curved axe used for hacking through defensive lines.

200 Spearmen

These troops are drawn from the farmlands and the cities alike armored in desert robes and using a combination of padding and hardened leather. They wield long bamboo spears and long shields for protection. Each soldier also carries a back up weapon of sorts as well as a javelin. They are durable soldiers drilled in basic formation although not completely reliable.

50 Pavise Arbalesters - pavise shields, light mail. Heavy crossbow, side arm.

100 Camel Troops - Although slower than horse cavalry and only moderately armored, camels have a particular odor which most horses find offensive. Armed with a short bow, a spear and a shield these camel troops can act as both skirmisher and medium cavalry.

Ah let me put my two cents into the whole bowl of chili. Immortal and I have always had different views on history, he being a much larger fan than I felt that real world history was more interesting than tes and liked to rely heavily on it for material, while I enjoyed the fantastical more and preferred history supplement material in the most minor ways. Because frankly, it looks like nothing but medieval total war in text. The very ra gada units issued above come straight from the game ( a few not all) and I'm sure a history book. Those arbalesters are anticlerite drilled and trained, courtesy of the Capitol flyte

The heavy historical reliance concerning culture has been off putting as well, I enjoy the alien concept of redguards and love seeing them as bizarre as possible rather than moors/Saracens/random arabic or whatever culture. We did well keeping the tes feeling in the roleplays, so why is it I see direct cultures carried over to the roleplay, surely creativity can overcome what lore has not. Like IB has stated, magic shouldn't be feared to use, just know that it's more powerful and not just anyone can do it, making your character special. If anything the timelines staple feature was dark fantasy and gritty realism.

I must also admit I find the roleplays story unlikely, while the very thought of anvil becoming a power after it abandons the dying empire seems unlikely itself, it's hammerfell invading that is most troubling. Haroun's sole goal is hammerfell, until every city is united he could care less about the umbranox family, assassins exist for these things, a method he has always been fond of. As a matter of fact, I had remarked at his plans to try and maintain some stability with the empire in preperation for the inevitable war with the ever hungry dominion.

Perhaps it would be more fitting for the dominion to find hammerfell negotiating with anvil.

Hope my comments did not anger our writers who prefer history.

By the way I have purchased a hard drive for my laptop, just trying to figure out how to put it in.

I thought the Mages Guild was [censored]? Didn't they die with the Empire?

They fractured into two seperate organisations, the college of whisperers and something else -- which are recognised by the new empire but not a part of it in the way that the mages guild was.

I agree with Story on this, I like the TES History alot more, I only use our own worlds military history on an aesthetic level (for example, when planning an Akaviri force I had to draw inspiration from several cultures from the orient) if something else is firmly influenced by an existing culture already, I'll build on it usign the same cultures but thats all.

As for magic, well its up for debate. On a social level I agree with whomever said that the nobility would use it to seperate themselves from the poor, but I dont think they would practice it on such a level that they become adept in combat -- I imagine they would be more attractive to Illusion and Alterations tricks, things to protect their hidden riches etc. However, I'll be bringing Balrahn back for this RP. He's a Redguard who uses magic, studied it under the tutealage of a very derganged Khajiit mystic as a child -- but his loyalty has always been with Hammerfell so he fights with them now. Well known for a fall from grace, his field of magic eats away at his ability to create a sword from energy.

Might also make another character -- I dont make very many swordsmen characters so it could be interesting to use and Ansei.

I'll design my own forces for the vanguard, I'll limit myself to 3000-4000 units, the rest can be shared out between any one else.

As for Elephants and explosives. I'm worried its going to turn into another repeat of the battle we had in Highrock which involved shoutey nords, invincible naked men who are the bane of horses, cannons and other such things. That is my primary concern with such units.

I think there is a fine line for drawing on historical points from our world to transfer over to a TES RP. No offense to Wooly, but like Story said, that entire list looks like my last playthrough of Medieval 2. Obviously TES won't be as deep if we compare it to our own history because its a video game and this is real life but to take complete units from our world might get a little ridiculous. I can say I have 300 Spartans of Anvil holding a pass but because their Anvillian, you guys can't get mad at me.

Anywho, regardless of which way we go, I don't see any reason to debate this anymore as our lord and master, IB, will pass his judgment on the issue soon enough, and as mere mortals we can only wait.

Verlox, am I expected to sort of get off my ass and make my own troops here, or are you gonna send me a template or something, or are you doing my forces for me? That, and we could use another person on Anvils side. C'mon, it'll be fun over here too.

I made the sheet at 1:30 in the morning. Some of it was from the main RP page. I thought IB wanted it done today, so I did it. He didn't want anything too exotic, so I didn't throw any unique stuff up in there, or too much of it.

I prefer going Story's way with the dominion. That's my two cents.

I personally don't see the need for every unit to be completely unique and something impossible to find an anologue for in RL. Of course I'm not saying that one should copy M2TW units down to the slightest detail, but I usually ground my factions quite deeply in history. I think a good solution isn't having an army incredibly fantastic, but having an army that feels integral throughout, not 'some real life army with special units thrown on for fun'.

No one's really said that to me that looking at actual history is off putting. I mean literally 90 + percent of TES is based in our history aside from the more generic aspects of it. Concerning the units wooly made, I think the point was missed about what was suppose to be done. Things like Naphta did exist however but Mamlukes was a distinctive specific military concept of the Egyptian Sultanates. It's more than just saying "archer." Tabardariyya just means more or less "axeman." I think it's pretty exotic and unique.

That's pretty much it concerning "Medieval 2." All were actual units but only one, the Mamlukes have an issue with them.

As for the story, Anvil is the other power center in the region. The Hammerfell cities in between are picking one or the other side. Striking out Anvil early on leaves the other cities only one alternative. You either get half the marbles at most, or all. But if people feel strongly about this I can just leave Anvil to gain some of the cities in the over all story line and we can move to RP something else.

Alright, make a 3,000 man sheet, i'll make the two wings, 2,000, split half between me and wooly and then we can do this if everyone still wants to.

I won't lie. That would make sense.

People go to war for unreasonable reasons most of the time. I mean if you guys want we can do a diplomacy RP. Would you guys want to do that instead?

Ok, whatever.

Still, "Raider" doesn't equal "Vanguard" in my opinion. I think of heavy stuff, not archers and things like that.

Y'know, words do have more than one meaning. As a battle formation, the vanguard is the largest battle of the army, and leads the battle. Thus making it the most important one. But in the sense we've been talking about, vanguard would mean "scout", "advance troops", ect ect, playing off its usage as the leading battle.

Funnily, this vanguard force would have a vanguard.

Of course, then you would have to take into account that you're depriving your main army of heavy troops that would be useful in larger battles.

lulz to military debates on a video game forum.

Though it is likely hypocritical for me to say so, I think we should just get this thing going and forget about all the technical terms, force compositions and political questioning. Does everyone agree or are these kinks something we should work out as a collective RPing machine?

I've always pictured Redguards as Moors or Indians (not Native Americans), really.

Anyways, I am working on my sheet in between homework and everything else, so that is to come soon. And what about the aspect of training/domesticating (to an extent of course) ogres or giants, or whatevs? If the Redguard are able to train elephants, what would make then unable to capture a troll or something and let it run 'round the battlefield?

Dominion does use goblins and trolls and ogres. A thing I want to specify and I won't much bend on is maintain a unique flavor. And to stop looking at things so much based around race.

If you guys aren't thrilled about the plot we could always go to Hauron's conquest of the rest of Hammerfell. But that would require Story to be uber active. I don't know, let me know what you guys want to do. I need more feedback.
