Tips for a Beginner

Post » Thu Apr 07, 2011 8:19 pm

So, I've ordered Fallout 3 and it will be coming soon. Before I start playing I would like some tips from anybody who can give them to me so that I have some information for when I start the game. Please reveal as little as possible about quest, the storyline or characters.

First, read this forum alot! Lots of great tips and plus "most" of the people here are good folks that share positive info and vibes.

With that said, mostly use common sense, and how do you see yourself living after a nuclear war?

I know I should be more specific, but with a bit of research on your part, you'll find everything you need to know in the many useful posts here.

And first time, get the best; armor/gun/ally. Have fun.

Cheers,

Stay only in this forum section, never go to CHS....

It's hard to give any kind of advice, as you have yet to experience it. But, I've got some thoughts:
- Save. A lot. Save a lot. I keep 15 rotating saves, never overwriting saves, always creating new ones, and later, deleting older ones. I save before I enter a building that is unknown to me. I save before I make important life-changing decisions. I clear my cache often. Oh! and yes, I forgot to mention to save a lot.

- It's really an awesome game. There are so many possibilities in terms of characters and how to go about doing things. Go slow, explore beyond the surface and have a good time. And do not forget you have difficulty slider.

I've fielded multiple characters, had a blast with all of them. Have fun!

Save often, pick Comprehension and Educated your 1st time through. Think about decisions before you make them is it really worth it to get more money but it could screw over a lot of people. The area around the 1st city is pretty safe so you can explore without worrying about fighting a tough enemy but that doesn't mean all the enemies are pushovers.

Tip for the beginner?

Hmmm.. take your time, no need to rush yourself - don't wanna do the main quest then don't, do your own thing.

save and save often - a clean save everytime too (as a yardstick, every 30-40mins) but if you're having freezing or glitches, every 5 to 10mins.

have fun - it's a great game!

Use S.P.E.C.I.A.L. wisely. Specialize in 1-2 areas. That is all.

Collect various items worth caps, it all adds up. Raider armour/spare weapons are good to sell. Sneak past enemies you cant fight. Make sure youre fully stocked up with food or stinpacks before going into dangerous places or doing quests. And save alot

Plan out your build ahead of time. I suggest playing through til you see a list of all the perks // skills // stats -- then making a build from that. Then post a thread on the forums and asking for peoples inputs. I say this because, if you have no experience when it comes to dealing with this level of character customization, it's very easy to break your character, and the later levels will be a pain to do.

Other then that, I suggestion exploring ALOT on your first playthrough. People may disagree with me on this, however I find the game to be most enjoyable on the first playthrough, that way EVERYTHING is new. And I find alot of the side-quest stories to be more enjoyable and well done then the main story. It's definitely more enjoyable having some planning done, makes it so you're first playthrough goes smooth.

Intelligence is a great S.P.E.C.I.A.L skill to invest in, I usually give it a 7 or 8.

its better to find out for yourself, that's the joy of excitement of playing fo3, i will give you some helpful tips in general.

Don't rush. Save often, this game is not 100% perfect, some bugs and glitches may hinder your game play. so a near save file makes up for you time

Understand the story, specially the significant npc (non playable characters) like lucy west, moriarty etc.

Regarding item consumption, utilize your goods and weapons, remember, you are going around the wasteland, and it is impractical to roam around with half empty handed inventory.

Experiment, try out a lot of configurations, don't even think of regretting it afterward, you can always play again with a new character, but giving your character different configurations enhances your build nature.

Lastly, observe. People around the wasteland develops some variable attitude. and that attitude builds up your story. so take note of that. Enjoy the game, fo3 is an rpg that is nicely done.

Stay away from cars when in combat, but shoot them when an enemy is near one ( make sure your at a safe distance, those cars can really ruin your day).

Alot of that is also based on playing this as an RPG, and not a FPS//TPS. It takes alot of imagination to make this into a role play game ,due to the story being so shallow.

Two big, big tips that are great for everyone:

1) Especially if you're on PC, hotkey stuff. You have 9 hotkey slots; you should have 2-3 primary weapons and Stimpacks hotkeyed at all times, at the very least. You'd be surprised at how much time that'll save you; no need to heal by opening the Pipboy, and you can switch weapons on the fly easily as the situation demands. Hotkey something by hovering over it in Pipboy and holding down the number you want to hotkey it to (for PC).

2) Quicksave is your friend; it facilitates constant saving and makes the saving process much easier. Make sure you use it!

Hope you enjoy one of the best and most immersive RPGs of recent times! :)

get 10 INT at the get go it gives you 20 skill points ever level, you can get your skills super high in no time.

Make sure you have your repair, whatever weapons you want used and any skill that peaks your interest high

don't do anything because you have too, fallout 3 is unbridled freedom if you let it svck you in you could go days without sleep

don't buy dlc that doesn't peak your interest, I would heavily suggest broken steel however +10 levels and infinite play goes a long way

it might be worth it to just run through the main quest once because it give you a good feel for the game, but again, it's completely and utterly your game let everything come to you, it might take a couple hours and 2-4 different characters but once you've got a feel for it, you'll be ready to have a full decision on the best way for you to play.

It's most important to let yourself have fun with it, the game gets easier as you level up so don't get to stressed out about making the best character and doing everything, just let it svck you in, it's all yours.

oh yeah, get your explosives to 25 as soon as your out of the vault, trust me

A complete waste of points. That will only mean that you max your skills sooner. Not to mention that there's a Bobblehead that gives you another point, so the very most you want to assign in that attribute is 9. 6 or 7 points is more than enough to give you a decent amount of skill points per level though, especially if you take the Educated and Comprehension perks.

That would be 30 points.
