tips for a second playthrough?

Post » Wed Jan 27, 2016 10:18 am

I'm usually not the type of person that plays his games more than once, but I kind of feel like it this time ^^ so I'd like to hear some opinions, about how you approach your future playthroughs, after finishing the game once

do you still keep reading terminals, even though you've read them, when playing the game the first time?

do you limit yourself to some perks, to make a more interesting character?

do you go 'all in' at one faction and ignore the other ones, or do you still play the 'have to do everything' type of character?

any other tips or mods that can help me enhance my experience on a second playthrough? :D

If it hasn't been that long since your first playthrough, make a challenge. No real need to read everything again unless it's been a long time since the last playthrough.

my subsequent plays I went for achievements I didn't get on first. Benevolent Leader still eludes me!

I typically only play games that have great replay value. This time around I'm struggling a bit to see any way of replaying this game with the same enthusiasm as the first playthrough. The only variable, really, is the distribution of perks, which isn't exactly exciting.

After finishing the game, further replays give you the best opportunity to really roleplay.

You don't need to do anything unless your character would want to. Sometimes that can be hard on the first play through as you want to see and do everything.

Not necessary after doing it once.

1st playthrough is learning the game. 2nd playthrough is getting all the acheivements. 3rd playthrough and beyond is doing I think the charactor would do in a situtation, (ie roleplaying)

I'm 10 hours into my second playthrough and i've put it on hold for now. Nothing seems any different to my first playthrough really, I'm just retreading the same path. I guess I could really try to make things different, but that requires more effort than feels natural, really. It would be.. a bit weird, like purposely handicapping myself just so things would feel a bit different.

I dunno, F4 offers a TON of hours of entertainment, but it feels like a one-and-done game, unlike previous Bethesda titles which offer lots of replayability.

take your time.

in your 1st playthrough, you're always kind of pressed to proceed with the story.

lots of teddybear scenes waiting for n# 2 :-)

had the same impression the first couple hours of my 2nd playthrough, but this passes quickly.

the problem is i think the fact you start in the top left corner of the map, and if you follow the story, it'll take you a while to get away from there.

with the vault in the map's center (like where vault 81 is for example), you'd just wander off to a different direction and get a different starting experience.

to shorten this, you could just make a beeline to the south or east from the vault, like, for me esp. the western edge of the map was pretty uncharted territory in my 1st game. and when you return to do the people saving / deathclaw killing in concord at level 50, that's kind of a different experience too :-)

I just make each one different in various ways. I've beat the MQ four times now.

Suggestions:

Back a different faction in the MQ.

Use a different weapon type. Go full Commando (all full auto weapons), or all energy weapons, etc.

Use different armor types. Go full heavy gear. Go leather only. Use only raider or metal armor. Use/don't use PA.

Use only cooked items for healing. No crafting, looted mods only.

No settlements, or try to manage all settlements.

I generally set up some 'rules' for my RP's at the very beginning just so that I know the following RP's can be completely different.

my 1st play thru, i went BoS, so there was quest lines i failed because i sided with BoS. now i am playing a stealth/melee PC, and joined the RR. so now i have a new quest line to follow that i did not get the 1st time thru. both of these i play on normal difficulty. my next play thru will boost the difficulty lvl. as for terminals, i still log on, but i speed read the text. i do this because some terminals will put locations on your map for ya. for the helluvit, i am playing a female PC this time, a 1st for me, and i am have a lisbian relationship!! LMFAO!1 it is hilarious! my partner even plays the part! i go up to her to trade items and she says, "oh! and here i thought we were going to snuggle." :hugs:

If your first time you play as a good / bad player, the next time through play the opposite.

Or if you were a combat-oriented character, next time be a sneak-oriented character. Or a charisma-based character. Or a science-based character. Or a melee-based character, etc. Just try out different play styles to see if you find them fun.

This sums it up for me, I myself will be going melee and full auto as I've stuck to rifles and pistols so far.

Not that I'm anywhere near my first play-through that is..

There's definitely not as much to do as in Skyrim. I had over 1000 hours logged in Skyrim and never actually finished the main quest because I kept running into more interesting side quests. In Skyrim your choice of class also actually mattered in the development of your character as there were such major side quests as Thieves Guild, Mages Guild, etc. Something that's seriously lacking in FO4. I feel completely bland in FO4 in comparison and will probably switch back to Skyrim before even thinking about another playthrough of FO4. Hopefully mods and DLC will be out by then and it will be a different experience.

Different play style with different perks.

1st was the father with Sniper and pistol with shotgun back-up.

2nd will be the mother with full auto weapons.

3rd will be the father again with heavy weapons and explosives.

4th will be the mother again with melee weapons.

I generally don't read the terminals and notes the second time through. But still do as much as possible. And, as above, collect missing achievements/trophies.

My first playthrough was a sniper with a gauss rifle for the Brotherhood.

My second (current) playthrough is Grognak. I like the melee build better for combat. You haven't really lived until you went toe to toe with a super mutant behemoth with an axe ;) (I even managed on the first try, was really surprised).

Also second (and further) playthroughs for achievements that aren't doable with the first.

Roleplay! I only did the main storyline on my first character to see what the game had to offer. After that is just pure roleplaying. My current character is an old gruff man who grew up hearing cowboy holotapes, making him grow up to act like the hero in the stories.

Picking only a couple of companions to use in the playthrough helps for me. I sort of let them be my moral compass.

A playthrough with Cait as my bff will be quite different than the one where I'm besties with Piper.
