Tips for someone just starting out

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 9:48 am

I tried Oblivion a while ago and couldn't really get into it, but I realize that it wasn't the games fault. My problem was that I had downloaded the GOTY edition and all of the quest markers that suddenly came up was pretty confusing for me so I gave up and started play Fallout: New Vegas again. The real problem is how much I like :fallout: . I would like to feel the same way about :tes: .

I think Oblivion deserves another shot to win me over so I would like some tips to help me through the beginning of the game. No spoilers please.

I can only quote Rindir from Rindir′s Staffs: take your time.
Let the game sink in and enjoy the music, the ambience and the total freedom it offers. To put it simply, do what you want to do; explore, enchant, raid caves, be a thief etc etc :)

Or just complete quests :P

mirocu has put it perfectly. Take your time. The questlines don't rush you, you move at your own pace. Don't be in a hurry to level up either. I don't know if you know this, but the levelling system is a little warped and your enemies level up with you. If your skills don't match you'll find battles can become difficult at higher levels. So take it easy whilst you're getting used to the game.

Try roleplaying a character. 'Listen' to them, get a feel for who they are, and let your instincts guide you both on your journey. I wish I was new to oblivion again :foodndrink:

I think I'll be doing quests for a while, I find that its the easiest way to learn all of the ins and outs. Its how I first learned to play Fallout 3 so I will, as you say, take my time and ignore the vile influence of the bright lights New Vegas.

Thanks for the quick response.

Edit: I will also be relying heavily on the wiki. Not for mission solutions or spoilers, but just for explanations.

Thanks for the quick response.

No problem. Welcome back to Oblivion :foodndrink:

But I′d suggest against the wiki unless you′re hopelessly stuck. If I had read that while being new to Oblivion it would have ruined my experience. The wiki is good, but be easy on it until you′ve learned more about the game on your own

I won't go hog wild on the wiki, just use it once in a while when I'm hopelessly stuck, hopelessly confused or both.

I play on the PC so I was wondering if its compatible with my wired Xbox 360 controller?

There are console controllers that you can use on the PC, however I′m not sure whether or not you can use a regular controller

If you've got to travel, by the Nine Divines, stay on the roads!

Thanks to everyone for the responses. The game has finished downloading and I'm about to put aside New Vegas and take another step into the world of Cyrodiil.

Note: I had to re-download the game from Steam since a while ago my hard drive decided to kill itself for whatever reason.

I'm now at the part where I've just brought Martin and Jauffre to the Blades temple and I'm really liking it so far. I did hit that wall near the beginning of just wanting to stop and play some New Vegas, but I kept at it and traveled to the planes of Oblivion and started killing Daedra...I started to really get into it.

I've read in one of the previous responses and on the wiki that there is a problem with leveling. How big of a problem is it?

honestly, dont listen to every bit of rubbish npc and *tut tut* players throw at you

the roads are packed with wild beats, whilst the wilderness is mostly safe

my bit of advice?

take risks, dont cheat, enjoy the game :)
