Tips/ tricks for a melee or unarmed character

Post » Mon May 04, 2009 8:28 am

I'm playing New Vegas pre-patch due to a lack of Xbox Live, and the character that succeeds my guns build is going to be either melee or unarmed, seeing as how unpatched energy weapons and explosives are out of the question.

Now, which should I focus on as far as playability? Melee seems a little bland to me, so I was thinking of a sneak/ unarmed build.

Tips?

I chose both because some perks are extremely well for both melee and unarmed but you may need high unarmed for that perk and vice versa

Melee have slightly longer reach, Unarmed have special moves.

And you should decide if you want to focus on critical or not.

Both will give you a complete and special build imo.

Tips.. Learn to place your current combat target in front of other hostile NPC's..
As then you can beat that one down with all your rage, while staying safe from most of the firepower getting thrown at you.

That's a trick I've known since the first Halo game :P

IDK if I'll enjoy this or not. We'll see how it goes.

I did, it's becomes great fun as you reach higher levels and get more bashy weapons and perks.
Early on you may think that it's not worth it, but when you hit level 8 and start getting specialised perks it soon passes.

Some of my favourite moments in NV have been close combat ones.
From taking a chainsaw to a vault full of ghouls to beating down ranger elites with "Love and Hate".

Med-X and Psycho.
Gonna need the extra boost when going toe to toe with a deathclaw.

I went toe to toe with a deathclaw, I used no chems, after the fight, my health was at 73%. Probably because my eyes were open (refer to my avatar) and I had a DT of 31.

Did you use VATS with that paralyzing palm perk?
Cause I never use VATS, always play on Hard or Very Hard and never wear any armor with DT of 21+.
That's probably why I needed the extra buff.
Still, doesn't hurt to use them, every little bit helps. :)

No VATS, Hunting Shotgun+, And Stay Back Perk and Shotgun Surgeon Perk, on Normal.
Chems hurt if you get an addiction, but thats a 30% chance the first time, 60% chance the second time, 90% chance the third time.......I think.

One on One there is no need for boost as long as you time your attack right; use terrain and it would be easier.

But using Chem force me to craft them :icecream: , so I like it.

I'm using the unarmed sneak build for the first time ever in this type of game. I love it so much I can't go back to being a sniper. When Boone and Ede tag along it works pretty well with their ranged combat. Pushy for crowd control and Love and Hate are my favourite weapons.

A common Doom practice. The NPCs hit by other NPC fire would turn and fire on them. You could get an entire room to pretty well wipe it's self out.

Ah yes the good ol' days.

I never played doom tbh..
Though in FO1 & 2 it was great to stand inside a door frame and let all the hostile NPC's use full auto.
Then see the brutal death anim as the NPC I lured to stand in front of my pc gets blasted into peices.

The other tricks are boost science to 50 so you can gain an extra 25% DR and 25% boost to damage with a crafted drug.
Then set survival at over 50 for the boost to strength and health from booze and steaks.

I regularly forget about chems as aids and dont actually like the idea of relying on them. Shame your character never actually gets that tough naturally...

-Slayer + Ninja + Bloody Mess + Piercing Strike + Unstoppable Force + Purifier + Better Criticals + Grim Reaper's Sprint = HOKUTO SHIN KEN!!!
Throw in a hit of Psycho or Slasher = BANE!!!

Have you noticed that people don't go flying when you hit them will melee weapons? This really kills melee weapons for me. :sadvaultboy:

You can still do it with enough force.

"-Slayer + Ninja + Bloody Mess + Piercing Strike + Unstoppable Force + Purifier + Better Criticals + Grim Reaper's Sprint = HOKUTO SHIN KEN!!!"
Ninja is a multiplier, and GRS only regenerate 20AP, good luck.
