I get the impression that while we've read entirely too much into this, that it's far from a waste of time because we keep having these side revelations about the plot.

I don't think we've read too much into it. That would be a bit too big a coincidence. And even if we were, the best symbolism is accidental.

At this point, it's easily all speculation and deductions from what is felt from the first book. The second book will more likely than not give us a better idea of who is fitting in where, if it's not just a coincidence. But hey, that's not going to stop us from trying to pick away at it!
