Todd anounces 5 or 6 different dungeon construction sets

Post » Fri Jun 25, 2010 11:19 pm

it was nice to hear in the new todd howard interview more details about dungeon variety.

- Can you say a bit about the differences between the caves?

- We stock them still in kit form, and it's something we've done since Terminator: Future Shock. The difference is that we have become better at it. We have been better to make the environment more organic and uses several building blocks. For example, many types of caves in the game. Overgrown moss caves and ice caves are a few of them. We also have a cave inside a glacier and an imperial fort. Altogether there are probably five or six general construction sets, but within them there is much variation.

So what are the 5 or 6 general construction sets?
1. Imperial Fort
2. 'Typical' cave
3. 'Elvish' ruin (I'm not too good with lore)
4. Dwemer ruin
5. Glacier cave
6. ?

what do u guys think?

Daedra aren't big in Skyrim, so I don't expect to see Morrowind style ruins. I believe Nordic Temples have been confirmed, so I'd switch them out for Elven ruins (of which we've had no mention) and add Nordic Barrows to the list.

Maybe ""Nord Tomb" might be too specific - could be a larger category that covers a variety of ancient Nord ruins. There are supposed to have been humans there for quite some time.

Ugh, I think we're forggeting everyone's least favorite dungeon type - the sewer.

That's pretty much how they've rolled ever since... well... ever.

Yes, even in Morrowind.

i think i agree. i think glacial cave is a category into itself. and moss cave, ice cave, etc would just fall under your typical 'cave'. while they mey be similar, im hoping that there is enough variety in the story for each cave. believable cave dwellers, interesting and varied stories etc.

Hmmmm sounds very interesting and varied compared to Oblivion, 5/6 types of CAVE is very impressive.
Can't wait to find this cave thats inside the old imperial fort :tes:

Cant wait to explore all these caves and forts in Skyrim, it was one of my favorite things to do in Oblivion, despite the fact that they all had similar layouts.

U gotta remember he said each construction set has several different things in each category so anything "nordic" could be in one set itself i.e nordic tomb nordic ruin nordic blah blah

If a bunch of novices are making the caves then yeah its bad news...buuuut....its bethesda so if anything they've learned from past mistakes mostly...mostly...but unlike other mistakes they've continued to do i am really secure about there cave designs thus time around...(oblivions caves werent that annoying until someone pointed it out)

He made it sound like there's only one dungeon in a glacier. Like it's a unique dungeon, not a reaccuring one.

I dont think so, caves in FO3 had variety in structure (not look) for example. They said this time we get six different types and within those six he even said there will be more variety. With the eight dungeon designers they have now I im sure they will be able to make enough variety and it wont feel like a "cookie cutter".

There's only so much you can do with graphical resources, but I think you're being overly pessimistic given what Todd actually said.

I dont think a fort counts, though if it were an abandoned fort or something like what they did for that one mission i oblivion where you ran into the spirits of dead blades and whatnot.
