Todd doesn't know

Sorry that he's not Peter Molyneux, eventually leading you towards disappointment. ;)

Every TES game goes like this in pre-release Interviews and Podcasts.

Peter Molyneux is nothing, at least not compared to Paul Barnett. That is the mightiest overhype of all time right there.

The unfortunate thing is it was a really quite good game, that would have been recieved just fine if they had been straight on it.

He was being cleverly coy and managed to dance around some of the questions like mounts and werewolves. I guarantee that mounts and were-somethings are in the game. Spears however were clearly a NO although halberds, glaives etc..are a possibility.

I think werewolves/vampires are on the "things we would like to be in the game" list for Bethesda. Like the man said. If it can be done right they will do it. Mounts I hope will NOT be in the game if they handle like OB mounts. Now if they put resources into expanding on the mount with possible mounted combat I am all ears. Good luck to them as that is a pretty good time investement. Do NOT count on spears or even halberds or glaives in the game at some later point. From the sounds of it the Perk/Animation combo is trending more to the swords/axes combo. They have invested most time there and the animations would be very different for a greater reach weapon. That said if glaives or halbers are in the game I will be disappointed that they took the time to add those reach weapons but did not bother with spears as that is what a lot of folks wanted in the game. If spears do show up they will be light throwing spears if thrown weapons make a return.

He doesn't want to overhype the game. Have you seen the way people turn on Peter Molyneux after every game Lionhead make?

It was real fun, talked about it as a Morrowind killer, couple of guys in the pre release Morrowind forum was real fans.
Actually without the hype it would be a decent game, but not something you use in the same sentence as Morrowind.

Oblivion had the radiant AI hype and the picture of the rider with the sword drawn, so they probably learned to be careful.

Yeah I don`t think it`s so much "Todd doesn`t know" as more "Todd doesn`t want to give too much info at this point".

I hope thats true about werewolves than since I don't play on PC I have been without them for years and I can't seem to play MW just because I can't stand the inverted camera angling

Sounded very much like someone who knows what happens of the floor. Playing and toying with ideas that may or may not make it, either due to complexity of code/content or unfitting for the game play, seems like a very reasonable approach. As much as I would like spears myself, I have to say crafting would be higher up on the priority list than yet another combat thing requiring everything new just for that weapon. Magic is still magic. Combat is still magic. Stealth is still stealth. We need something *new*, and crafting/professions (and survival/nature stuff) seems to be the right focus.

Anyone else feel that Todd Howard answered our questions with a lot of "It's being worked on and we are seeing how it goes into the game...but I don't know.."

I can't wait to listen to this podcast in November after the game is released and see what has changed. Anyone else feel like this? (Not really sure what the feeling is)

He answered the majority of questions with a real answer. He actually only answered a few questions with the "It's being worked on" line which is exactly what it is, they are working on it. This is how game development works. Things can change through development because you either can't get it to work quite right with the time you have or it just doesn't fit the final scheme of the game. He can't just say what the current incarnation of the system is because it may be less than what someone likes and then they complain about it when it won't be what it actually is and it may be more than what it ends up with so everyone will complain that BGS lied like the whole Radiant AI fiasco in Oblivion. The Radiant AI in Oblivion is a great example of how things change. It was stated to be a certain way but because of issues with it, it had to have some aspects of Radiant AI removed that would break the game. An example of this is that the original Radiant AI would have homeless people that would steal food because they were so hungry. When that homeless person stole food and got caught, the guards would attack the homeless person, then the citizens would attack the guard and then the rest of the guards would attack the citizens and it would end in the entire city being annihilated. This was a limitation to the game engine. If your a modder you will know that NPCs are set to families and these families caused too much interference with the Radiant AI.

Well that's certainly correct.

Yeah I don`t think it`s so much "Todd doesn`t know" as more "Todd doesn`t want to give too much info at this point".

Honestly, it's a little of both. There are definitely things that could change in the game, but then there's also times where we just aren't ready to discuss it. Between the cover stories and the gameinformer.com stuff, I think we've shared an awful lot pretty quickly after the announcement.

Any clue how far testing has been going? If you ever listen to Valve Commentary 90% of development is done by testers. They change things over and over again until something fits. Couldn't this be the case with Todd? The game may go through some serious changes, not overhaul-y type stuff, but all of this little things.

Yes, but you have to agree that some of the GI updates were just mostly repeating what was already said in the GI magazine.

todd is unsure about an awful lot of things nine months before release. Eight after you cut at least a month for bugtesting and manufacturing and shipping. That's a lot to be unsure about.

Which is a good thing as there's no way I could get a copy of that where I life. But I'm glad Power Unlimited had four pages on Skyrim as well.

It was just your typical CYA statement. He doesn't want to make any hard confirmations this earlier incase things need to be changed. Like the horse mounts, he basically stated that they need to be better and are working on making them better but if they don't get them where they need to be they may cut them all together. So he isn't going to hard confirm on thier inclusion.

Lol just from looking on here a lot of people don't have high expectations for the game. So i guess hopefully they will be surprised. I have high expectations but i don't nitpick games to every little extent, i also don't worship some games and no matter what comes out it's not as good.

hi

I dont see people "worshipping" Todd they are just happy with what he said, I am pretty sure we all have high expectations and if not so ? less disappointment will happen

Yes, I really appreciate his openness and honesty. Just saying "I don't know, some of my guy's are still working some ideas and we'll have to see how it goes" is a lot better answer that the standard bs PR answer.

Yeah, there are people out there who just give the standard answer of "We cannot confirm or deny that question. Information will be revealed when the company decides to." I'm glad to see that he's willing to admit that they're working on these things, but not outright saying "This is definitely going to be in there" only to disappoint everyone when it's not. When that happens, unrealistic expectations turn into realistic expectations, and it is 10x worse to break realistic expectations.

Too bad this forum doesn't know the line between them :P

I was oddly reassured by the comment about companions. He said upfront that there will be more of them, but that we should expect a complex backstory or a depth in personality. Well, svcks a bit, but the fact he could say that bluntly makes him all the more believable when he insist that dragon encounters will be fairly scary.

oh my god thank you someone finally agrees with me. Todd is being honest and forthcoming but doesn't want to promise something that's not possible and to me that makes him even more like able.
