Todd Howard:BGS is working on three new projects

Post » Sun Feb 21, 2016 2:35 am

This seems to somewhat defeat my hopes that BGS would focus both studios on one game at a time, instead of working on several projects at once.

TES VI is a certainty almost. It's their flagship franchise and the thing that put them on the map. I don't think we'll see the sequel until 2018 at the earliest, but to say they might stop here is just being illogically pessimistic, in my opinion. I've noticed most fan forums I've gone on for videogames has always assumed an end each iteration. Even Pokemon, back in 2007ish.

My guess for their 3 projects are TES VI, the TES card game, and maybe FO5 or a mobile TES game that is akin to Fallout Shelter. I could see the mobile TES game launching late this year or early next year, and could perhaps be a ploy to get a similar "4 billion sessions" to introduce new people to TES.

The more I think about it, the more I feel like at least one of their projects heavily involves procedural generation. BGS has always explored emergent gameplay, and the way they systemize and modularize everything can translate almost perfectly - and with modern technology and the popularity of other games like Minecraft, I think now's a good time to revisit the concept similar to what they did with Daggerfall.

Bethesda Game Studios and Todd Howard are not going to forget about developing new The Elder Scrolls video games.

I said it many times before. He needs his creative freedom he's eventually going to be developing new video game Intellectual Properties (IP's) into franchises.

Todd Howard can't work on developing The Elder Scrolls video games and Fallout video games for all of his life. He even looks tired in the latest videos of his interviews and at Gamescom 2014 he said he wants to something new and fresh.

I don't mind if The Elder Scrolls VI releases for sale in 2021 or 2022 or even 2027. A long break from developing The Elder Scrolls is a good thing because he can come back renewed and think up of fresh new ideas.

Perhaps if Beth is working on a mobile game it will be a strategy game of some sort. This sounds interesting.

it doesnt sound like one of these projects is tes

maybe they follow their strategy to basically announce it when its just around the corner?

I don't know but the way howard talks i get the feeling that bethesda is getting tired of making fallout or tes games? Thats at least the impression i get...

they are building up their mobile division and thats different than anything they have done before...and that the card game is one of the 3 is also possible - it can be mobile, online, competitive, money maker ala heartstone

and then what, a moba? oh boy....

I don't think they're getting tired of making Elder Scrolls and Fallout necessarily, but they do seem anxious to start doing new things. It would be completely unsurprising to learn they're working on a new IP. No idea what it could possibly be, though.

tbh I like the fact that they're willing to tap the potential of mobile gaming. There's a lot of crap on mobile, and a lot of devs with nothing but dollar signs in their eyes; but if nothing else, Beth is a studio that makes the games they want to make. So maybe they can use their weight to shift the direction of mobile gaming - wishful thinking maybe, and Fallout Shelter has its issues, but I really want to see what happens there.

It's important to remember that Bethesda is a small studio, as far as AAA studios go. They're a tenth the size of the team that generally works on Assassin's Creed.

That size has advantages and disadvantages. From everything i've read, they are far more... egalitarian. Everyone has some sort of input or say, and they get a LOT of ideas tossed around. It's less a dozen people in a boardroom delegating tasks, and more a constant barrage of ideas from everyone involved.

Under those circumstances, i'm sure that many more ideas get brought up than you'd expect from larger studios. And any idea, regardless of where its from, can cause enthusiasm and excitement, and with such a small (comparatively, 200 is still a decent amount of people) those ideas are more likely to get around.

In any group i've worked with, the larger they get, the easier it is to maintain focus. Which could explain why they have so much on the go at a time... They get carried away with ideas.

I personally think their team needs to expand to some extent. 150 - 200 people wouldn't be too problematic, imo. They could still keep a lot of the developer freedom if they just divided the groups up effectively and had the right people as team leaders for the new folks.

I'd personally not mind some degree of procedural generation of a Daggerfall map scale, but I think for now, something 1.5x - 2x the size of Skyrim would be a feasible expansion.

i think they should just implement tes and fo as their "standing products" and produce everything else they want on top of it through additional people - these linse can also finance any "experiments"

and after they finished version X of fo or tes during the release of the dlc which is usually after 1 - 1.5 years they should let obsidian make a tes / fo game during that time which can release after 2 years and fill the gap to the next installment of the other seires

2015 fallout 4

2016 fallout 4 dlc

2017 fallout 4 obsidian

2018 fallout 4 obsidian dlc

2019 elder scrolls 6

2020 elder scrolls 6 dlc

etc.

etc.

it would be amazeballs

I would find extremely disturbing if one of the three projects is not TES VI.

In fact, this is starting to look diaturbing to me.

I think these three projects have nothing do do with either Fallout or The Elder Scrolls.

Yeah especially since Todd Howard says they are doing something new and different that they have never done before.

If it was related to the The Elder Scrolls video games and Fallout video games he would of said we are doing something new with our existing titles or starting fresh with our existing titles or something like that.

No, he wouldn't have said that. That would mean (to the press and to the fans) confirmation that they're working on the next TES and/or Fallout, and they don't want to do that anymore. They want to shorten the announcement-release period like they did for FO4. Everyone knew Fallout 4 was in production, there had been script leaks, and they still said they don't have anything to talk about Fallout 4 :) So, having this recent pattern as a precedent, are you sure that "new and different" necessarily means new IP's?

Yes it does, I have purchased The Elder Scrolls video games since 2002 when The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind released for sale. I have followed Todd Howard's interviews since 2004 with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and when they work on developing a new The Elder Scrolls video game when that new The Elder Scrolls video game is finished being developed and close to being released for sale. Todd Howard would always say we always have this idea to start new and fresh and see how further we can take it with new ideas.

Todd Howard has never said something new and different before. Todd Howard also wouldn't say we have three new projects in the works he would say we have three projects in the works or we have three projects in the works for existing titles. Something like that.

Watching the latest interviews like the Gamescom 2014 one looking at Todd Howard's eyes he looked very tired. Maybe it's because he was developing Fallout 4 for so many years, but either way he looked tired of working on developing The Elder Scrolls video games and Fallout 4.

Personally I think Bethesda Game Studios should take a break from developing The Elder Scrolls video games and Fallout video games for a few years I want to try other types of genres or settings developed by Bethesda Game Studios, like a Cyberpunk video game developed in Bethesda Game Studios style.
