If Todd Howard were to say...

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 4:14 pm

"We realized that players engage in all kinds of unnatural behaviors to raise their character skills as fast as possible. They don't do it because they want to increase their skills per se, but rather because they can't wait to be more accurate with weapons or better at picking locks. If skills are nothing but an annoying means to an end, why not remove them? We decided that in Fallout 4 aspects like weapon accuracy or proficiency at picking locks will entirely depend on the skill of the player. By sparing players from the need to grind their way to proficiency, we hope to turn Fallout 4 into a game that is enjoyable and immersive from the get-go".

What would be your reaction if those were the words of Mr. Howard?

Leveling up and assigning skill points is a fun and essential part of RPG gaming. You have to make choices about what skills you want or dont. If you put it all in lockpicking and none in guns then you are a character that cant shoot but all doors are open or vice verca. There was never a grind or unnatural play to achieve skill points for me in F3. I would just make a note and return when i had levelled up more or play the game again with a different character build. Having things like shooting proficiency based on player skill has its place in CoD style games but not RPG.

I enjoy playing RPGs and it would no longer be an RPG without character building. Or am I missing something in this post?

I'd cry. Then shout at my cat in frustration.

But nah, skills are a fundamental element in fallout, or any rpg ever in fact. Todd would have to be smoking some crazy [censored] to remove them...

Without any character building it would be a travesty. At least as far as RPGs go we would end up with a sandbox action game nothing more or less.

I would be sorely dissapointed and I definitly would not buy the game until it were less than $15, unless the modding community some how fixed that. but a huge gameplay change like that Im not sure the modding community could fix

I would be happy that I'd know for certain that the game was garbage without having to buy it and experience it first hand. It saves me money.

One could design an RPG that way. I would be very curious to see what they did.

As for weapon proficiency it was kind of like that in Fallout 3. I had more success manually aiming than using VATS regardless of my skill level. The skill level did help in VATS, but had no effect in manual aiming.

Pretty much this ^

Fallout is an RPG series. We create our character and build as we level up.

Even Tactics which is a Tactical Combat game has RPG mechanics.

Talk about a loaded question. Nobody in their right mind would say such a thing is good, given this context.

I would think he needs to go live in the Shivering Isles. However, I'm not worried about this, I'm sure we'll have skills.

I would not even consider buying Fallout 4 and I would also be finished with Bethesda games as a whole.

Come on, even a causal game where you do nothing but mess around in like GTA has a skill progression system!

They may as well add modern rap music into the game if they would do something so stupid!

They would never do that.

Besides, skills in Fallout don't increase by using them. So what would you be grinding on?

I'd simply not buy the game. All that serves to do is let me know that the lore they made shall also be [censored] and thus better off not wasting my time.

I don't understand all these silly ideas people are posting here. Remove 3rd person, remove skills, remove vats, remove special. What?? No thanks. All of these things are a part of what makes Fallout such a great game. Without them it would just be another FPS.

"In other news EA storms Bethesda office and forces them to use Frostbite engine and multiplayer". I jest of course. They did switch things up by making stats tied to armour. Not sure how well that fits in nuclear Armageddon though. *puts on his cardigan of six appeal +5*.
