Todd: "Oblivion sacrificed what made Morrowind special.&

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 9:25 pm

Just found http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/03/11/bethesdas-todd-howard-oblivion-sacrificed-what-made-morrowind-special/

Firstly, sorry if it's already been discussed on the forum. I realize it's not exactly a new article. However, it is the first time I've seen it, and I check the forums fairly regularly. Since I hadn't seen it I figured there would be others who hadn't, and it sounds like good news, particularly for the Morrowindite faction on these forums.

Yes it was discussed before, and in great detail I believe.

But either way, it's still good to hear. I'm glad they're going to bring back the fun of exploration, and alien concepts.

I'm just sad for the "Morrowind faction" if they didn't feel the wonder of discovery when playing Oblivion...but I don't think they all speak with one voice. Oblivion was my first so I had the wonder of discovery without it being colored by any previous experience. As for things feeling foreign...the Planes of Oblivion were very foreign and I don't know if there was anything like them in Morrowind yet because I'm not that far in. I know Morrowind is a huge leap forward from Daggerfall but that was true from Arena to Daggerfall too. I'm just glad I found this ride and whatever the devs want to do is pretty much fine by me because I want to experience it. Don't take all the criticism without a grain of salt, Todd. That's the nature of online forums. Multitudes who love the games don't post....they buy. Thanks for posting that link. :)

I always felt Morrowind was far superior compared to Oblivion on these subjects.

I remember first discovering Tel Aruhn in Morrowind. Was really really cool. It also always felt so exciting to go in the dungeons in Morrowind.

I'm glad Todd has considered that and made it affect Skyrim.

*sigh* Big yawn here. Everyone (especially the developers) seems to hate Oblivion now that Skyrim is announced, just like everyone was bashing Morrowind when Oblivion was announced. No doubt when TES VI is announced, everyone will suddenly hate Skyrim. Go figure.

Each Elder Scrolls game has improved on the last IMO. Morrowind is still a great game, and probably the one that improved on its predecessor the most, but it's also a very flawed game in many respects - NPCs that never moved, looked identical, blocked doorways, dull quests, no physics to speak of, everything you encounter hyper-aggressive, absurd enemy spawning system, cretinous melee, stagger every time you're hit (slaughterfish anyone?), completely broken or unbalanced skills (speechcraft, enchant, alchemy, medium armor, armorer, mercantile, are there more?), etc..

I think Skyrim will improve on Oblivion overall, but do some things worse, just as was the case with Oblivion and Morrowind (like with fast travel, quest markers, fewer weapons, leveling, etc., much of which has been completely fixed with mods). It just seems to be hip or part of the hype to make Oblivion out to be much worse than it actually is. If nothing else, the mods make it mindblowing.

no, ppl have been hating on Oblivion since the first trailer. cyrodiil was supposed to be a jungle.

although ppl were upset that not all of Vvardenfell was a volcanic rock.

I hope they don't retconn much in skyrim, especially the established lore on dragons.

I don't give a crap if Skyrim was announced in this matter. I would still think Morrowind is a much better RPG for many reasons, some which are stated here. I go by experience. My experience with Morrowind was much greater than with Oblivion. Much greater.

That doesn't mean Oblivion was a bad game though. Oblivion is still heaps better imo than any other non-TES RPG that's out on the market.

of course the Devs all of a sudden "hate" oblivion thats how PR works, you saw how bad your last game was even though people were pointing out flaws for years, and then you say BUT we "fixed" in this installment, arent we awesome? Oblivion was made to be accessible to a FPS crowd, to draw in the fluster load of money circulating out in the market, Beth wanted some of that and twisted the next installment to suite that, 5 Million sales seem to confirm this.

Oblivion wasn't "bad"...it just svcked in comparison to morrowind, take away the natural given that is Tech and gameplay, Morrowind would still run circles around Oblivion, period.

No... people have legitimate concerns. I thought Oblivion was fantastic - but if you played Morrowind how can you honestly argue that it didnt have a more wondrous and magnificent feel? The world was shrouded in mystery. Oblivion? Not so much. Shivering Isles kinda make up for it in my opinion though.

Morrowind felt forlorn, and that element was taken out of oblivion
but oblivions perfect western European fantasy land was great with helping to set the mood of the crisis becuase you were able to see a contrast between the 2 lands

Agree, that's one of the things that were better in Morrowind, although I don't think Oblivion was "bad" in that regard.

Oblivion did have some feel of wonder and discovery, I love the game and the atmosphere. But the thing about Morrowind is it was a completely alien land. So many "strange" and interesting things to discover.

Oblivion was more of generic fantasy (not saying it's bad), and Morrowind just had tons of unique things to it. Plus the Deadlands (Oblivion realm) were pretty much just supposed to be like hell, nothing too special. And the towers looked very LOTR-esque.

I took the liberty of fixing that.

I like both, but I liked Morrowind better. It had more depth and content. More gamplay mechanics and builds you could RP, at least RP them easier.

Oblivion had a lot better combat, magic system, etc. just gameplay in general was a lot better. Better sound, better graphics, better voice actors. (unfortunately not enough of them)

Morrowind had a more varied world/areas. And uhhh... ya.

The "varied" aspect of morrwind wears off after one playthrough, though. It's just as vanilla as oblivion was after completing the game once.

Never really understood the morowindphilia. Very strange indeed.

Do you expect people to respect the opinion of someone who believes their own opinion is the infallible truth? No, not everyone shares your opinion. I personally feel that Oblivion's quest design (big points to the quest design), gameworld, and faction plots are better than Morrowind's while my favoring of two games' various little mechanics is split between the two.

I will admit, I don't think I ever experienced anything in Oblivion to quite compare to my first trip to Sadrith Mora.

Idk, I just felt more at home when playing Morrowind; Oblivion was great and it made some great improvements but it just didn't have the dark and whimsical feel that Morrowind did....At least in my opinion lol.

and I don't know why you harp on my post as if I said anyone who thinks otherwise is a blasphamous fool, as if I am not aware of a world and various opinions and thought proccess of my self, pointing out peoples post as opinion on a Forum is redundant unless backed up by proof, if you cannot auto associate posts with opinions when proof otherwise has not been applied then I don't know what to say. I don't need to put In my opinion in an effort to avoid offending those who think otherwise, you take it or you don't I don't think I need to put up a massive sign on a forum as if anyone cares.

I responded because you put up a sign of the opposite thought.

Yeah I'm still wondering why that is a problem to you, if its not true to you then so be it? alright In my Opinion, if Oblivion did not have the Graphics and tech it had and was built alongside morrowind, Morrowind would win out.

hah I mean, the last sentence in my post doesn't even focus on a particualr aspect, it could literally be anything. and in my defense, the topic implies the same thing >_> Oblivion sacrificed what made Morrowind special a dev said this, and I do remember saying Oblivion wasn't Bad, it just svcked compared to morrowind, I didnt say in what way >_>./

I don't doubt that Oblivion did sacrifice some of what Morrowind special... albeit while gaining some separate, special things of its own. I just don't believe one game's specialties had an inherent edge over another. I'd call Oblivion a step to the side. Certainly, I want hand-placed loot, again.

I Agree, it is a Step to the side but that step can be twisted and turned in a number of ways. I play Oblivion and Morrowind currently(modded), Oblivion has a charm I don't think is focused upon.

Its setting is certainly not much more than a stone's throw from the local forests in my town. The very plants in the game are, for the most part, real. I like the vibrant look at times, but wouldn't mind it in combination with some more creative factors. I, personally, get a very different feel from the two games. They're completely different worlds.
