Todd Tries Again

Post » Sun Oct 16, 2011 12:54 am

I dont mean to be cynical necessarily. I just want to point out a rather...disturbing thing I noticed. In Morrowind, the goal was to have the Corprus spread rom place to palce as you went on, decimating areas. This never panned out, but its remains are still in the game ("Dont worry, I bought a resist corprus spell. Im sure that will do something for how much it cost!")

So then Oblivion came out, and the main quest involved progressive destruction leaving permanent effects on semi-random places that would increase as you got near the end. The only problem being the oblivion worlds were completely tedious and marred by the mechanics designed to keep you from using skills like acrobatics to get to where you were (If you try hard enough, you can open a door before you smoosh into the ground.) And they were always the same, and just got more irritating. The main reason was to nab those Sigil stones.

So now Skyrim has a series of dragons, probably increasing in number and power as you advance through the game, leaving destruciton on a semi-random path that will leave permanent scars on the world. The main reason for dealing with them is to nab the sigi--err, nab the dragon tongue powers.

Oh im still rather angry about that ridiculously overpriced special collectors edition. Do I get the specal edition of a game i really want to play, or do I go to a therapist to stop my constant, dreadful panic attacks? Not really much of a choice is it? I made the mistake last year of accidently tellling myself not to die before the game came out. Know what that did? Caused panic attacks that made me feel like i was going to.

Yeah, I'm kinda irritated. Besides this is all Todd's fault. Those horrible Dreugh gave me hydrophobia. I still cant stand going underwater in either morrowind or oblivion. :( I should get a pocket guide free for that.

I think i had a point when I started this post but i cant recall what it was. Panic disorder does that.

Nothing Todd puts emphasis on as the most awesome feature of the game ever worked out and never will. Sidequests are much better on the other hand, because they are made by awesome writers with good imagination and are not butchered by the guy with a lot of money who says the game is too hard and plays in Todd mode.

I'm...
I'm not sure I understand your point. You're not happy with repetitiveness? Streamliing? Or just the game in general?

Eh, I don't think even Todd claims that.

He doesn't like the direction Todd takes the game and provides certain examples that bug him.

Dragons can attack cities and cause some damage.

Could be worse, Todd Howard could get fired and replaced by Peter Molyneux.

Dude, how I envy you
I totally love TES series, but it never invoked in me such strong emotions
Like fear or panic attacks, damn if game makes you crap your pants it means game is good

Could be worse, Todd Howard could get fired and replaced by Peter Molyneux.

Don't even joke about it
It would be the same if next Avengers movie would be made by Uve Boll
It would lead to same horrible result- few thousands suicides, death of game series and at least one guy who would buy sniper rifle and hunt developers down :gun:

P.S. That one guy would be me...

Made me laugh, but also true.

Hopefully this won't be another Oblivion, though.

Its unfortunate you think that as Todd and the rest of the Designers has influence on more than just the main quest's in development. If one thing is bad, its the team's fault and not a single man's fault, sorry.

Or even worse, Denis Dyack. We'd wait another ten years, then he would slag us all of for not thinking the game was the second coming.

OT : One point @ OP,are you really complaining that towers are there to stop you using acrobatics to get to the top. That is kind of the point of towers, and the rest of the pocket worlds could be crossed more quickly, and barriers bypassed, with fortify speed and acrobatics/resist fire magic.

Too Human is a game that was announced ages ago and was supposed to come out for the Playstation 1 around the same time as the first Metal Gear Solid, it got delayed up the jacksie and finally got released in 2008 and turned out to be the worst game of the decade.

It is a little difficult to follow your line of thought, but I think what you are saying is...

You wanted Corprus disease to have a more interesting impact in Morrowind.

You found Oblivion Gates to be lackluster.

You expect dragons to be lackluster based on Oblivion Gates.

And you believe that Todd Howard should be blamed for making these design decisions.

I personally find your complaints not that big of a deal considering what they gave us and are giving us in the games. But if you don't like how the ideas were implemented, should you be blaming Todd for coming up with the ideas, or the developers for failing to execute them?

"worst game of the decade"?
I thought that place was taken by DykeNukemForever?
Or maybe it was biggest disappointment...

Too Human's development cycle came close to rivalling Duke Nukem, but no. At least Duke Nukem kept a resemblance of fun, Too Human wa just all bad. Everything about it was rancid, the controls, the music, the story, the UI. Everything was terrible.

Todd is THE executive producer and THE game director at Bethesda. Every time he says "we thought this was too... and we decided to..." it means "I thought and I decided".

I lol'd really hard. Duke Nuke 'Em forever was the biggest waste of time and excitement I ever had. Ah well. As an added note I'd say Fable 3 did poorly next to Dawn of War: Soulstorm. Never. Again...

Edit: As an added note a thought just crossed my mind with the OP. Surprised it didn't come sooner o.o. Those Oblivion gates were bland, uninteresting and empty(Not barren) feeling world spaces. No sense of despair, no particular challenge with the enemies and uninteresting progression. You had occasional gates where you thought it was interesting but after completing that world you never really felt the same doing it the second time. Let alone third, fourth and beyond.

I feel for you and can definitely understand what you're saying (having a panic attack right now brought on by bronchitis, I'm usually pretty good but it looks as though I need to go back to my normal level of meds). Anyway, I didn't play Morrowind. I could never get into it. Oblivion, I hate those damned gates so now I just use a cheat to close them. Dragons are amazing though. One of my favorite mythological animals so I'm looking forward to Skyrim so much. The TES world actually leads to my calmness. I also agree with you about the price of the CE, but you have to understand that these companies are out to make money and if people will pay that much (I did for Star Wars The Old Republic's collector edition) then they'll charge that much. Feel better please. Panic is nothing to play around with.

Or it means WE thought and WE decided. You know, since that's what he said.

Or are you in BGS meetings with them?
