Tomorrow is the big day!

Post » Tue Jul 20, 2010 4:48 pm

Ok I have an appointment at 1:00pm tomorrow to get my drivers license and I was wondering what all is one the test besides a three point turn and parking. My dad said that they used to do a 30mph to 0mph quick stop when he took his, but that was back in 1969 haha.

I know I'm going to pass I just want to make sure I have all my bases covered, I don't like not knowing things.

Keep both hands on the wheel. I lost points for not doing this. Also, on blind corners, make sure you don't go until you can make sure no one is coming. Not sure how I was supposed to see around or through a brick wall, but lost points for that as well. Not sure about parallel parking, I didn't have to do that, but other people I have known have.

probably different from state to state. city to city, inspector to inspector.

parallel parking-know it.
mirrors, check em.
parking-remnember to put it in park if they ask you to turn off the car.

relax.

Use your blinker a lot. Whether it be turning towards the curb or turning away. Also check your mirrors constantly.

And look over your shoulder for bicyclists when making right turns.

My test was super easy, I left the DMV and drove around a neighborhood for 10 minutes. I lost points for not keeping both hands on the wheel and for not immediately slowing down to 30 MPH when I saw the new speed limit sign. I didn't even have to parallel park, or anything really that advanced. Now I know why there are so many poor drivers on the road, because of the horrible driving tests :P.

In Gwinnett County, Georgia, I had to reverse park and do a quick stop from 20mph. I also did have to parallel park, amongst other things. I svcked at the parallel and reverse parking, but I'm guessing they're not as important since I passed with flying colors.

It's different in all states. Just drive 5mph under the speed limit to be safe. Stop before the SIGN on a stop sign, then creep up. If they tell you to stop in the middle of the street like they did me, look in rear view before stopping. When he tells you to go in reverse, look back again. Wear your seat belt, adjust mirrors (they love that), and a nice attitude and friendly personality helps as well.

If you don't think you can make the parallel parking midway ask to see if you can back that up and try again, the guy I was with was cool with it and I got mine on the second try.

Got my license the first try. yay!

REMEMBER to look at all your points of view and mirrors when ever your turning, stopping, or going. Thats the only thing I lost points for because I forgot to look one direction or two.

Don't hit pedestrians - they will dent your hood/bonnet in speeds in excess of 40km/h. Don't his cows, they go through windshields, similarly for deer/kangaroos/moose. Try to avoid hitting wombats, they destroy engine blocks, suspensions (18 wheelers have been jack-knifed by those things. seriously!).

But most of all, relax, be confident, be decisive and don't screw it up.

So your the guy who ran over my cat? :cold:

Only advice to you is relax, take a couple deep breaths, and keep your eyes on the road at all times.

Good luck.

Be friendly to the instructor. I FAILED UTTERLY on the parking (never made it into the spot and hit the cones) but still got my license. Still cant parallel to this day.

Always turn the wheels the correct way when parking up and down on hills. Use blinkers as much as possible.
An over the night park is when you take the keys out.
Adjust your mirrors and seat before leaving (you don't have to but I hear it makes you look good, I didn't do it)
Don't make wide turns. (that was my only point off)
Don't go too slow, like 15 under.
Wait until no cars are in sight to start backing up again.
Complement the instructor ;)

Good luck my friend.

It's simple, look at your dead angles when you turn, use your flashers, go 5 km/h bellow the speed limit and don't crash or run a pedestrian over.

And there you go, you'll pass!

And look over your shoulder for bicyclists when making right turns.

For general driving/riding, its worth doing periodic (not just for turns, lane changes, etc.) headchecks just to make sure there isn't anything hiding in your blind spots that you need to be aware of.

Funnily, the only point I missed on my drivers license test was accidentally leaving my blinker on that I used to pull up to the curb with while going in reverse...

That would be an insta-fail here with our hour long driving exams and half hour written tests.

I can't tell whether you are being serious or not about the insta-fail part

Also: my test was only 20 minutes long and I didn't even have to parallel park :P

Yes, horribly serious. I left my side mirror down for about a minute after doing my reverse round a corner (which was shortly after my 3 point turn)and it was possible he could have failed me on that, had I not stopped to reset it.

We have very crowded roads here and not very many wide or straight streets, so they have to make sure everyone can drive a manual properly without crashing into a phonebox or mounting a roundabout.

I know for a fact that there isn't parallel parking so I should be good, I've been practicing three point turns so I'm good on that and I'm taking the test in the easiest most laid back town within 50 miles. According to my friends you only have to drive about a half mile down main street, pull into a parking lot, do a three point turn, park and then drive back to the DMV.

So things to look out for/do:

*TURN SIGNALS*
Check mirrors
Stay 5mph under the speed limit (even though I already do that, I'm paranoid about getting a speeding ticket :P)
Adjust mirrors
Compliment the instructors hair,clothes,etc.
Two hands on the wheel
Stay calm
No wide turns
Avoid running over wombats

Sound good to you guys?

My test was less than 5 minutes long. We just drove around the block, backed up against a curb (as long as you don't hit the curb you are fine) and drove back.
