Tomorrow things will change

Coincidence? Not at all. Let's review the facts.
    1) Game series gets new installation using Steamworks
    2) People who have been long-running fans of the series get the game and thus must install Steam
    3) Everybody complains because they don't know how to use Steam and can't be bothered to go look for the solutions to their problems - nor try any alternate methods of dealing with it - themselves.
In conclusion; don't be a fool.

There's two posts right here dealing with the issue, one by a Steam user, and the thread that I linked. Are you such a sycophant that you can't even conceive the possibility that Steam could screw up on their installer? It's quite obvious that something is wrong so that it kicks into download mode rather than looking for the disc. Maybe you should build yourself a shrine to the gods of Steam who can obviously do no wrong in your eyes. I really don't understand why so many Steam supporters approach any issues regarding the company with such fanaticism. It's really quite pathetic frankly, and turns me off of using the service even more.

Good luck playing New Vegas, then. I'm sure the moderators here don't exactly tolerate piracy, though.
In any case, I will admit that I skimmed over the posts after yours - but I still think there's more than this to just "Steam can't install off a DVD properly", considering how I've found it to work fine myself on various occasions. I guess we'll see when I get my copy, if it ever arrives!

I considered making myself a "shrine to the gods of Steam", but considering what they do to the prices over here in Australia...

Either do I. If I decide that using Steam simply isn't worth it then I just won't play the game. At any rate I won't be playing it until the GOTY edition comes out. I'm reading far too many reports of various bugs. I'll wait and see how things are when the game's complete and all the issues have been dealt with.

Well in all fairness it seems to be happening very rarely, most people have no issues in that regard. So you may have just been lucky, or they've made some changes in their installers recently. Which is most likely the case I suspect.

Same plan here. Will be returning to modding when that time comes and maybe port a thing or two over.
In the mean time, with the great amount of work that is still to come, I doubt the Captal Wasteland will lose any of its charm.

A couple of my longtime favorites would be FWE, MMM, WMK, Powered Power Armor, Impervious Power Armor, IMCN, Ambient Temperature, HelmetPOV.
And probably any realism mod that adds depth and blends in seemlessly to the gameplay.

Not leaving till NV till it's patched up to a reasonable level (probably December)

Just wanted to thank all the modders for their amazing work. I've been playing with mods since they came out for Morrowind, and they just keep getting better.

Wish there was a place to support the modders with donations ... like Wikipedia ;)

Wanted to upload the list of my currently modded Fallout 3 and say a big thanks to the creators, who made Fallout 3 one of the best games, maybe the best, i've ever played.
Special thanks to FWE creators and the people who helped compiling it, MMM creators and RTS creators.

Wanted also to mention that i played NV and found it so linear, i went to replaying FO3 for a 6th or so time. Mostly cause of these mods :)

I too am back after FNV i played it once and found it ok i guess . But diddnt want to play it all again to finish all ending . Instead i just went off a save i had made before the Main quest choices were needed. And finished them all that way. And back playing FO3 its a much better game IMO

Here Here.

I don't know why even thinks they will have to leave Fallout 3 to New Vegas? I can understand the curious nature one gets when a new game with the ability to use modded content comes out but why is everyone saying goodbye already?

maybe because NV >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>...> F3?

In a lot of ways I feel that FNV is a superior game, yet at the same time I do find myself yearning for bits of FO3 at times, for a variety of reasons.

That having been said, I suspect that a fair bit of my desire to go back to FO3 is due to a couple of years worth of mods and DLC all tacked on --- because in fairness my mind isn't comparing FNV to FO3... it is comparing 95% vanilla FNV to 95% modded FO3.

I do miss the Capital Wasteland though... it felt much more varied and interesting.

maybe that's a personal, subjective, opinion?

I'm thinking it might be the mountains in NV, they seem to convey a form of claustrophobia -not to mention impracticalities at creating any exterior structures with all the mad verticals everywhere.. it might also be the fact that they put Vegas in the middle, which only allows exploration in circles around the town, which makes you feel like you're walking.. in circles?
-the amount of explorable territory north of Vegas was appallingly little, just a measly strip of land and a house or two.

True. If you listen closely enough you can hear your own echo. I am however still checking in from time to time, but for the most part the FO3 mods section has turned into a ghost town.

I have not played Vegas myself, Skipped Oblivion, was playing Morrowind while all else was focused there, and would STILL be playing it if it weren't for VATS. Somehow I'm endlessly fascinated with when the bullet or object strikes and the combat sequence takes place. I'm not just popping at figures in a distance, watching them fall, I'm participating in its narrative sequences as well.

It would be well if VATS could come to Morrowind, or Vegas gameplay features can come to FO3 but regrettably, once a game is released, companies have a tendency to move on. The only companies that do not follow this rule and improve the interface and other aspects is with board game classics like Monopoly or something.

All else is left to the modders. Even ONE mod can change the way F03 plays and it becomes another game. I find it incredulous that Seremoth is running all those mods without a CTD slum.

A hearty Thank You Bethesda for allowing a game to be so easily changed!!!

I'm sure there'll be people who return too after a while. I imagine the Morrowind modding forums would've been pretty quiet in the first weeks after Oblivion's release too.

Thats exactly what I felt too. While I really liked New Vegas and some of the advancements they made, my heart is still with Fallout 3. :)
