Tomorrowind 2016: A mod recommendations list for today

Post » Tue Jan 19, 2016 6:57 pm

Introduction

Over the years there have been many mod recommendation lists. Unfortunately, with the closure of several mod hosting sites (most notably Planet Elder Scrolls) a lot of them are littered with dead links. For newcomers to the game it can also be very time consuming to go through 12 years worth of mods across multiple file hosts.

I've been using Morrowind mods for over 10 years and I made my own list in 2011. Now at the end of 2015 I'm bringing it back with fixed download links and way more mods, old and new.

Edit: The list has moved! https://www.reddit.com/r/Morrowind/wiki/mods/1080pizzalist

Whew, that's done. :)

As you can probably tell, I wrote this list with newcomers in mind.

Let me know if I made any mistakes, feedback is welcome!

Thanks for your work. I might look into that when I get in the mood for Morrowind, I just do not know when that will be.

Incredible job! That will be infinitely useful to link newcomers to. Well done, Povuholo.

Great list. There is a lot of cool stuff here that I want to try the next time I play. I really hope you'll be providing a future section that contains Graphics / Sound. One of the biggest parts of getting Morrowind up to 2016 is making it look the part and I feel like a lot of people download MGSO when there are a lot of nice a la carte options available.

I hope to get back to that at some point, as it was a part of my previous list. I think I can put a decent list together that covers most of what people want to replace without turning it into a downloading nightmare. While still offering multiple options. I can also simplify the Morrowind Graphics Extender section this time.

It should be less work than this list, since they don't need individual descriptions and there are less compatibility problems...

I think tes3cmd's multipatch should be encouraged over 'Mashed Lists'. It's easy to use and includes all of the list mergers, but also fixes other important things that mashed lists doesn't cover (e.g. fog bug, summons crash, incorrect cell names, etc).

I figured some of my modding knowledge would be outdated. I'll have a look at that and see if I can replace the Wrye Mash section with it.

Edit: Command-line tools are not what I'd consider easy to use for the average person. Is there any short simple guide available on how to install and use it for multipatch? I'd rather not link people to the https://code.google.com/p/mlox/wiki/Tes3cmd which has quite a lot of information to go through.

That's pretty list you have there. In case you would be still looking for some suggestions, I would have some:

Graphic Herbalism has a lot of http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/searchresults/?src_order=1&src_sort=0&src_view=1&src_tab=1&src_name=graphic__herbalism&src_language=0&src_showadvlt=1&page=1&pUp=1, including addons for Tamriel Rebuilt.

There is alternative to Neoptolemus' Undead mod called http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/40085/? by Arcimaestro Antares

http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/42125/? makes RM much taller. I personally cannot play without this anymore

Reizeron made also http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/43488/? mod besides Flies mod

http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/21372/? is pretty cool quest mod for more shady mage characters. I made a little patch that corrects some bugs - in my Little mods thread

You listed some of DarkElfGuy's quest mods - I personally really like http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/22286/?

http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/42928/? is quite nice little dungeon mod with reward

http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/43496/? is pretty awesome creature mod

Since you included Book rotate in the list, there is also http://mw.modhistory.com/download-11-15101. It is made for older release, so it might not work with books added by latest versions, but still worth it I believe. There is also http://mw.modhistory.com/download-98-7023 mod. And I also made a little utility that will try to attach rotation scripts to weapons and books from all mods you currently use - link in my signature.

IIRC, abot and perhaps spirithawke provided some bat files to use tes3cmd to automate the cleaning and patching process. This was I think about a year or so ago. Probably would be quicker to use Google to find them.

Edit: link to http://www.fliggerty.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5734 at Fliggerty's site that gives more info.

You could include some simple instructions in the OP.

How to run via command prompt:

1. Place tes3cmd into your "Morrowind/Data Files" directory.

2. Hold shift and right click anywhere in said directory.

3. Select "Open command window here" from the context menu.

4. Type "tes3cmd multipatch" into the command prompt and press enter.

Or

How to create a batch file to run multipatch.

1. Place tes3cmd into your "Morrowind/Data Files" directory.

2 Create a new text file.

3. Open the file and input "tes3cmd multipatch".

4. Save the file with a .bat extension.

5. Click on said file to generate a multipatch.

I like the batch file solution! I'll update the OP in a bit.

"http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/43365/? + http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/43918/: A simple and light weight mod that adds the need to eat, drink and sleep. This mod comes with an altered version of At Home Alchemy. If you use At Home Alchemy, remove it and use the plugin included here (TheBareNecessities_AtHomeAlchemy.esp) instead."

That patch didn't work for me, and neither did the earlier one. Can anyone C/D the patch effectiveness? I really want to use TBN but the weariness bug breaks it.

I did not get a lot of playtesting done with this mod so it would be nice if anyone else could confirm that the issue is still present.

Awesome list Povuholo! While I'm not exactly a newcomer, I was just about to install Morrowind on my new Windows drive and this is a great resource to have around.

Ever thought about why modders added travel NPCs and teleportation spells back for those who avoided fast travel? ;)

Haha, good point. Personally, for Skyrim I have the fast travel option disabled but have mods that add travel NPCs. For Morrowind I always thought that teleportation mods were the equivalent of fast traveling in Oblivion and Skyrim, and I do not like them. Abot's idea of linking teleportation to skill is great. I really like it.

Thank you for your great efforts in making of this immaculate collection of recommended mods and tools, it would surely help people easily mod their game and not dread finding the right mods and the stable builds of those mods.

This thread honestly deserves to be pinned, so that newcomers can find it easily and so it won't get lost with the other threads.

The moderators on the Morrowind subreddit have given me a wiki page to put the mod list in, I'm considering hosting it there and just linking to it from here. That should be an easier way of doing things than forum posts.
