TOO Barren?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 8:57 pm

Don't you think the Mojave Wasteland will be too barren? Because most parts of the DC area and Virginia, which is a METROPOLIS area, were VERY barren. Now, imagine a desert that is already barren. It will just be an empty field of sand, not too much fun huh?

Any thoughts?

I'm sure they didn't make it that way.

basically means, "no vegetation" or "empty" so to say. Do you know about Google? All you have to do is put the word in a search bar and tons of stuff comes up :)

You want to talk barren? Try Fallout 1 and Fallout 2's Overmaps. Whole lot of Nothing between Settlements there.

Also, I dunno what game you were playing in regards to Fallout 3. There was a lot of stuff in the Capital Wasteland. Seems you couldn't clear a hill without seeing a decaying store fronts, dilapidated neighborhood, or broken stretch of highway, with cars serving like tombstones.

This isn't the Saharra. Real deserts aren't very barren when you get right down to it. In the Mojave alone (in real life and probably the game) there are underground springs and caves, abandoned mine shafts, cave networks, etc. Couple those things with abandoned shacks and vehicles, ghost towns, mining camps, etc. and you have a very interesting environment to explore.

Sawyer or another developer mentioned these things when asked about the Mojave, so conceivable we will see examples of such in the game.

Too barren - nope, don't think so.

The guys at Obsidian said they concentrated on making a flat, sandy, barren desert seem unlike a flat, sandy, barren desert. I think we'll have some cool things to run into.

I hope so.
Was weird to find something new every 50 meters and enemies every 30 meters.

Despite what the devs have said about everything being denser, it seems pretty barren. Maybe all the gameplay vids I've seen are just taking place in really isolated areas. The area around New Vegas is definitely going to have plenty to do at the very least.

Nope, They said there will be MORE locations in New Vegas, so it might actually end up having ALOT of locations on your Pipboy.

There might not be a lot of pre-war infrastructure around, but since it is a region that is currently being fought over by lots of factions, I expect to see lots of camps and small towns set up by people recently from grounds up.

he means barren in terms of terrain and vegetation

to answer it, yes and no. it will be somewhat barren, it is a desert after all, but there is going to be like shrubs and plants out there, so not that barren, the capital wasteland was barren

I don't want it to be too barren.

I don't want to be running around in a bunch of sand for the majority of the game. Maybe Bethesda will live up to it's futuristic reputation and put like a gas station in the middle of the desert. Radio tower, gangster warehouse, underground tunnels or something. I like to explore, so I don't want to see just a stretch of sand over every hill I climb.

Considering this is the first thread of the sort, after a sea of "F:NV TOO DEVELOPED?!" threads, I'd say we'll be alright.

Well, their is a trophy to discover 125 locations, if that is an indication then there will be a lot more locations than that. One of the developers said that there will be a lot more work in secondary locations, so it should not be too barren. :goodjob:

Also the topography is way more varied it seems, especially around the Colorado, and the Dam. Me thinks there will be some cool stuff hidden in hard to reach, dangerous places (danger from falling).

To barren.....No. There will be o'plenty to "bump" into and as someone said before FO 1&2 now THEY were barren, but even in the town/cities they couldn't put hordes of NPC's for sake of performance. If your on PC I'm sure we will get another mod to add NPC's to the wasteland as we have one for FO3....and I apologize for forgetting the name of said mod that I do have on my play list

From what I've seen, I think you're right, actually, the environment looks like it might be less empty than Fallout 3, at least in terms of vegitation, I mean, there's actually LIVING plants now!

It's not like just because it's a desert means it's going to be all just endless expanses of sand.
