Is It Too Easy To Earn Caps?

Post » Mon Jan 11, 2016 5:12 am

I have about 70k caps now. Made most of my caps from selling Jet, crops and purified water. I have only 1 Charisma but have a +4 CHR outfit (pompadour wig, ratty skirt, black rimmed glasses) and pop a graqe mentat (+5 CHR). One selling session in 15 minutes real time, I can make close to 3000 caps. Now I have so many caps that all I buy are shipments of concrete and wood. Building 2 levels of concrete barriers in my settlements. Anyway, is it too easy to earn caps? I think it is.

It kind of is, but it's a refreshing change from previous Fallout's in my opinion. I think it's easier because there isn't that much to buy. I've found everything that's been worth having so far and there are no houses to buy and furnish like in 3 and NV.

This time through I'm playing on Normal (I was on Very Easy). I beefed up Perception, Endurance, and Charisma. I'm at Level 35 and I still only have 2 Luck and 3 Agility and I'm at 50,630 Caps. I haven't bought anything other than some ammo when I was getting low and it turned out I didn't need it because I found more long before I got to the point of where I was before I bought it.

More so in this version than in prior versions, if you play smart you can get quite far ahead very early on. For example, pretty early on I acquired a full set of BoS T-60b Power Armor just by watching a battle between the BoS and a large group of Super Mutants from far away and waiting for them to kill each other off.

I also don't scavenge any weapons or armor to sell that isn't worth at least 25 caps. I don't get that much when I sell it because I haven't taken any vendor perks, but I don't end up with 20 cheap bolt pistols that weight 60 pounds and are only worth 12 caps.

My first time through on Very Easy I had maxed out Luck and I didn't have near this many caps and I was farther in the game. I think I was at Level 50 iirc. So I think it really depends on how you play and not so much the perks.

yeah ^^ just as it was in the old games :/

but it's reasonable to be honest... you're killing thousands of raiders and doing tons of dangerous jobs for all kinds of people

surviving this journey obviously makes you rich after some time ^^

it would be weird not to get any money after those missions

...annd this is why there are drug dealers IRL. It's just too easy.
But I gotta say, you have to do the farming to make it too easy. I don't make smd sell anything. At least not yet.
I got up to 2k as my highest in hand yet. Almost at lvl 40.
But that's my play-style. I mostly scavenge and loot to trade for more ammo and a few extra caps if I ran into a legendary.

What do you think of consequences of mass producing/farming in game breaking excess? A rival tries to steal your jet, or to steal your turf. Or, raiders learn and ambush your supply lines/transactions?

If you find anything on this game...or and Bethesda Open World Game...stop doing it.

It's a simple choice of limiting what your character does or does not do.

That's how Bethesda designs their games. They leave the choices up to you.

And that's why I like Bethesda.

Yes and no. Early game it can be, but if you focus on building a large settlement straight away, and get it working FOR you (not the other way around), you'll be swimming in caps.

My town in Sanctuary produces 4000 caps worth of water a day, and my sattelite farms at Tenpines, Oberland and Graygarden produce mutfruit, corn and tato. The entire operation is essentially a glue and money factory, allowing me to equip myself and every settler with high-end, upgraded equipment.

All this by lv. 32!

So you built a/several money farm/s out of your settlements and complain that it works? Congratulations?

I'm level 55, I've played over 100 hours, and the only thing I've bought is a house.

It's not too easy to earn caps. It's too hard to spend them.

I wish they'd add more money sinks for endgame characters, but really the amount of caps you make is fairly balanced unless you make an active effort to farm a ton of stuff and empty every merchant you find of their caps. Which I think is fine - the economy shouldn't be so challenging that you have to play a wasteland tycoon just to afford most things. And I guess a good money sink is buying shipments of every supply you can find and slowly fortifying every workshop settlement in your network. One of my character goals is to link every settlement and build artillery there, and I imagine that could get pretty expensive.

If you play on survival tons of money goes to ammo... I can never keep more than 3k caps in my inventory.

It doesn't matter how easy it is to get money because there nothing to buy.

Everytime I went to a store it was because I had too much stuff (random legendaries) and then I bought all the usefull ammo (mostly just 10mm .50cal and .45) and I still had money left over.

Caps' potential is capped by the fact that stores at best sell one mag of smg ammo. One friggin' mag.

One.

If you do a bunch of massive settlements shipments of crafting material are good to buy instead of foraging. Cryolator ammo is also insanely expensive. I do wish caps had a bit more use.. Maybe a cool airship or boat that costs 50K caps or something

Caps are plentiful, but I invest everything I make in my settlements.

I'm currently just selling stuff for the sake of earning caps. I have no reason to buy anything, there is no unique items that I have seen other than some poor ass weapons that cost nothing. I loot myown ammo and grenades, everything else I use I can grow at my settlements. So yes it is easy to make caps, but it is also pointless.

well if you want the "benevolent leader" achievement you're gonna need around 20-25k caps along with a whole bunch of other things, there are also loads of neat stores you can build in your settlements that cost quite a bit of caps. also, you don't really need to sell everything, you could just hoard it for the sake of filling a bathtub with jet and psycho, maybe you want a bucket of grenades and a baseball bat on your balcony to show people your "eccentric rich person" side?
if you'd rather hoard bottlecaps instead, thats fine, but I like drugs, weapons, silly outfits and painted powerarmors more :P

I was thinking it's a little free giving on the caps. They should charged us weekly or monthly rent on any homes we choose to buy in the game. That way a constant incoming & out going of funds will be required. Just an idea to make money feel like money in the game.

Its always easy to earn caps in fallout games, but by this time in any other fallout game i usually have over 100000 caps and set for life, i still have usually high 30,000 in this game.

Dont know why that is, but im not as filthy rich as i usually get.

II get that some people like a playstyle where they have to worry how they use that last few rounds of ammo, but with this much to do in a game, I find it liberating to be a belligerent water-baron with thousands of rounds of every ammo, 20+ PA suits and coolers overflowing with chems.

I invest 500 caps in EVERY seller I find and they STILL never have any armour or weapons that are better than mine? Shouldn't sellers, (like in Diamond City), have top tier weapons and armour that should scale up always above what you have, ESPECIALLY AFTER I invest 500 caps to make them one tier higher? They should always have mid and upper tier items to spend caps on.

Hmm, I'm lv57, somewhere around 120-40 hours, and I've got.... 30k? I bought the house in DC, and Spray & Pray. Otherwise, I just buy junk.

A big difference between this and FO3, is that guns are so heavy & can't be combined via repair. So I don't pick up guns or armor to sell, usually. Another big difference is the crafting system - in FO3, I picked up and sold junk for caps. In FO4, I keep all the junk. And when I do go sell stuff (I do sell a few guns, and armor bits. Plus drugs & old-world food), I tend to buy junk in return. And shipments, now.

But I've not set up any resource farms, really. I'm not producing quantities of purified water, I don't regularly harvest produce (and when I do, I stick it in the workshop in case I want to make adhesive/etc).

Well you did abuse the vanila game mehanics for max profit and now you complain you got to much cash, what did you expect btw its kinda been like that in any Bethesda game money sonner or later becomes worthless anyway.

Do i think caps are to easy to make, no not at all but there are easy ways of getting them if you decide to play that way but you chose to play that way so nothing to complain about.

As with others, i have set up a robust economy of several settlements linked together that can mass produce a variety of commodities. this means i always have the caps or trade goods to get anything i need from traders. But the game in general doesn't need traders. the occasional shipment of goods or small scale purchases of ammo and specific junk can be afforded just off your regular cap accumulation i find. going the extra mile to set up a robust food and water economy (or being a drug dealer) can make you feel wealthy but doesnt provide anything you wouldnt have gotten by just being a regular ol' murder-hobo.

How can that be when merchants only carry few hundred gold? I'm level 32 and sitting on 15K which is a decent amount but would burn up quick if I bought shipments and other expensive supplies.

Yep. It's a choice the game mechanics give you. If you invest in the economic perks with the shops and play Farmville, you gain the ability to just step out of your house and buy most everything you need in-game right then and there, but you lose the sense of desperation.

With strong back 4, I can load up any ridiculous amount of water and still fast travel to every vendor in the game, making a lap of the map and bring back.... well, anything, and take all the caps they had, too.
