Is it too late to complain about androids?

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 9:20 pm

I just wondered if anyone else, like me, feels that the apparent pre-eminence of androids in F4's story is disappointingly superfluous - in what is already a series with a much more interesting established lore?

I mean, we already have robots. The retro style tin can ones seem more at home than the possibility of including 'Bladerunner' style ones that I just worry won't really fit in the Fallout atmosphere.

Surely the game should focus on fleshing out more established concepts than taking risks on new ones. I'm sure the game will be great, anyway, I just don't want that slightly resentful aftertaste and thinking: 'if only they'd left that particular thing out, it could have been the perfect game'.

If this issue has been raised before, my apologies. I am fairly new here.

I'm actually fairly excited to see what they do with the Androids. I like the look of the base model with the tear away faces, but it will be interesting to me to find out which "human" characters, if any, are in fact Androids. So long as they don't over do it.

well since they introduce the whole Android lore on fallout 3 isnt a new concept, plus android arent common as robots, the whole lore is base on Boston and the Institute there.

so the game will be around the androids vs the institute, im pretty sure the main quest will be about it. so i dont fell it will be a issue.

One of the very many non-issues on this forum for me. I personally think the story will be good.

It is never to late to complain and the internet seems to be the place to do it... forums why its down right a given........
So I seem to have developed this rash its a tad below the belt and a bit above the knees.... Itches like the crazy and the pus I was thinking it was just a dose of Rads from a hot spot, but it sure seems to be localized if ya get my drift.

Let me start by saying that I was surprised by an android appearing in Fallout 3 and I accept their existence in Fallout games. I will be surprised if there are not androids in Fallout 4 and I accept that.

That being said, there has been no reference to androids in the E3 footage. There has been no reference to androids in the Gamescon/Quakecon footage. There has been no reference to androids in the two Special videos. The ONLY thing that mentions androids is the leaked documents that said the player character was a ‘male’ android two years ago, and that was information not meant to be seen by people outside the company.

My guess is the role that androids play in the story will be that of Fallout 3 i.e. completely nonexistant if you don’t do a quest. So if the possible inclusion of androids is a deal breaker, you’re going to have a bad time.

From what we've see so far, Harkness and his stupidly human design seems to still be a unique case. The synths that we've seen in trailers and concept art so far look more like robots and less like ordinary humans, which to me is a good thing.

As for old vs new lore, I think it has to be a mixture. You can't just have absolutely nothing new. One of my problems with Fallout 3 was its over reliance on West Coast lore (Brotherhood of Steel, the Enclave, and Super Mutants) and its refusal to spend its time developing its own identity and lore. Then again, some of its new lore was Harkness and his stupidly human design.

I don't mind a moderate inclusion of androids, I just don't want them to be anologous to the campaign as Skyrims dragons were to it's main story

Synths might be an older model of android or Fallout 4 takes place before Fallout 3. Actually, Fallout 4 does take place before Fallout 3 with the tutorial set in 2077. It would be funny if the whole game is set in 2077 and what we think is happening in the 23rd Century is just an elaborate VR simulation.

From a gamer point of view, it's never too late to whine. Whine, whine, whine to your heart's content! Whine about a game you play 500 hours! Whine about a game you haven't even tried yet! Whine about a game you play for free! Whine until all developers has no [censored] idea who got a valid complain and who doesn't!

Then whine for a good reason and be ignored.

Bladerunner Schmaderunner. For years with this......
How about, Metropolis. Androids have been around for longer than Robby the Robot has, so it certainly isn't a case of them being too modern.
They are much like Super Mutants (Atomic Supermen) in this regard.

This. The http://i.imgur.com/Y2VeWMB.jpg (this one https://scontent.fphx1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/t31.0-8/11900110_10153546943102673_5121281761193305_o.jpg) and what we've seen in the gameplay footage doesn't make androids looks very cyberpunk or super high tech or anything. I could totally see a design like that in one of those 50s sci-fi magazines or something... and I bet a lot of cheaper sci-fi flicks just hired a regular guy and had him say he was an android so advanced he looked human.

And I don't think they'll actually be using the whole "this character was an android the whooole time!" bit that often. It was a significant thing in Fallout 3 because it only happened once, and A3-21 was already unique in a number of other ways. But it seems more like they'll want to use the "androids look cool af" thing more often, with the prosthetic limbs and having parts blown off.

It's been too late since Harkness showed up in FO3. And no, I'm not disappointed. Fallout retreads the same ground waaaay too often so I'm happy to see something newish.

I hope the androids are like the Gunsliger from Westworld played by Yul Brynner.

I don't get the resistance to new concepts. I want Fallout 4 tohave some new factions and story twist in addition to expanding on the old.

Yeah, its probably several years to late for it to amount to anything. Personally i'm ok with androids because they're kind of a sci-fi staple. Fallout, or bethesda's view of fallout, is one of a perverted american dream mixed with 50s sci-fi gone wrong imo. Looking at fallout 3 you have androids, cryogenics, laser guns, crazy robots, vampire cultists, lovecraft, ect. It might come out really dorky and lame, but i'll save my complaints (if i have any) for after i see them in game. I gotta imagine they'll be looking at feedback from fans, if androids turn out to be a unpopular idea i doubt they'll show up again.

I actually agree with the OP. Although, my love for stuff like Bladerunner kinda gets the best of me. I am looking forward to seeing Androids, but speaking objectively, I feel like it is somewhat of a shift in focus that tarnishes the thematic unity of Fallout. I felt the same way about Mothership Zeta and the Tunnelers in Lonesome Road--- They're cool in their own right, but they just don't seem to belong in Fallout.

All things considered, my biggest fear for Fallout 4 is that it will have a twist where the player character is revealed to be an android.

Agreed about the old vs new lore. I welcome anything new that Bethesda adds to the universe rather than relying heavily on old assets. They've already added some interesting new lands like the Pitt and Point Lookout.

However, for the particular case of an android plot, I only hope it doesn't entirely fall back on typical cliches on such subject matter.
