If you want power armour, then I'd say the Wintersized T-51b is the best as it comes with no negative effects and is virtually indestructable due to a glitch.

But if you want to go lighter, then I'd advise the Ranger Battle Armour; it provides very good DR, and boosts your luck and AP amount.

With that said, I personally like to use Leather armour. Sure, it won't protect you as much as other armours, but I think it looks cool. Sometimes I don't even wear armour in battle -- I like the Regulator Duster (looks badass) or Autumn's uniform... though I only wear these out in the Wastes if I want others to do the fighting for me.

Metal master armour (My new unarmed dude)

Haven't really tried out the others on it yet, but it would be similar to everyone else's answers.

Well in the case of vanilla Fallout it's either the Leather Armor or the regulator duster for me. Makes it harder but it looks better and suits my character.

1. Ranger Armor - High protection, perks, no CHA loss. and you can repair it with easily available armor types. Only downside: to get it, you have to give up on Eugene.
2. T-51 Armor - I normally don't like power armor much, but this is just too good not to like.
3. Talon Company armor - Not the best protection, but you can get it for the price of the ammo you used to kill the merc wearing it.
4. Combat armor - Better than Talon company's, but inferior to Ranger armor.
5. Merc Troublemaker outfit - Poor protection, but a great look. Especially if you're a small guns enthusiant.

Just reverse pick pocket or steal Eugene when Brick is sleeping. No biggie. Best of both worlds. :)

Donovan died when I was doing the quest so I got Ranger Armor and the rare helmet. Along with Eugene. And Donovan's Signature Wrench! Talk about a triple-hitter!

The only vanilla armor I wear is the T-51b, and that's only as a last minute contingency plan. Or if I need rad resistance and don't have any radaway. Everything else is from mods.

My play style doesn't really require much in the means of high DR so I don't generally need to carry anything heavy duty, nor use it frequently. I can go nuts with clothing made more for aesthetics than protection and survive just fine. Hence, 99% of my wardrobe was found on Fallout3Nexus.

Most of the reason these are my top 5 is cause' I think they look cool.

1) Enclave Power Armor + Helmet
I use this set with my Laser weapons.

2) Enclave Hellfire Armor + Helmet
I use this for real fighting. With weapons like Vengeance.

3) Rivet City Security Uniform + Enclave Officer Hat
Assault rifle, 10mm pistol, combat knife.

4) Tesla Armor + Helmet
Usually use this with the MZ Alien weapons.
(they look like pulse weapons kinda...)

5) Armored Vault 101 suit
Very handy when starting a game.

i like the armored vault suit the best, but i also like rivet city and tenpenny tower armor, for heavy duty armor which i don't use often, i would say outcast and tesla.

1. Tribal Power Armor + Filtration Helm

During The Pitt, I forgo my nigh-impervious Winterized Tb-51 for this combo. It just looks so awesome. Reminds me of the characters from Gone with the Blastwave.

  • Winterized Tb-51
  • Tribal Power Armor + Filtration Helmet
  • Chinese Stealth Armor
  • Grimy Pre-War businesswear+Lincoln's Hat
  • Pint-Sized Slasher Mask
