DR & DT

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 9:45 pm

Okay, I have been told the difference, and I thought I understood it, but I think I am confused again.

I know that DR is being implemented into NV, but how will it work.

I am assuming (and PLEASE do correct me) That if a gun or attacks damage is below the DR of the armor, then nothing passes through. But if it is greater than the DR it proportionally lets a perecentage pass through the armor, but not all of it...

Math with not make me understand it too well, as I was never into those classic RPG or Dice rollers, humor me in laymens terms if need be.

Thank you!

There is both damage THRESHOLD, and damage RESISTANCE.

Damage THRESHOLD reduces all incoming damage by a set amount. So let's say you're wearing armor that has a damage THRESHOLD of 5, and I shoot you with a gun that does 11 points of damage per shot. You will only take 6 points of damage.

Damage RESISTANCE reduces all incoming damage by a percentage. So let's take the example above and say you are about to take 6 points of damage, but the armor you're wearing also has a damage RESISTANCE of 50%. That 6 points gets halved to 3 points of damage per shot.

Or at least that's how I think it works, because that's how it worked in FO1 and 2.

DR = Damage resistance. All damage recieved is reduced by this number as a percentage.
DT = Damage threshold. All damage recieved is reduced by this number directly.

so then there is a chance that some armor combinations will block some attacks outright? And if they do do this, will the ARMOR itself take damage? Does the reduced damage count for the armor hp or health hp?

HOW ORIGINAL THANK YOU!!!

Nah, I asked because I have never played FO1 and 2, and I know some of the ole timers can give me some fairly well educated answers about it...

As I understood it... DR is off by default, but its still in the engine code, and can be turned on with the GECK. I was under the impression that DT was the only thing in use. Has this changed (or was I wrong to begin with)?

The game uses only DT. The GECK still supports both, so you can theoretically either implement both or return to the Fallout 3 system if you have the PC version. And DT doesn't cancel all the damage. 20% of the damage always passes, regardless of the DT. Of course, that is moddable too.

It was easy to miss. I think that really came out only when Ausir did his Fallout: New Vegas preview on the Vault.

First mod I'm getting. A mod killing the 20% thing.

Edit: It's called DT for a reason. As it is, it's glorified DR. (Though I like the system better then F3's)

I hope its like this, this makes sense to me, although it should only go up to 80% so you cannot be god-like.

That's what I though too, but if you look at the latest videos, clothes have a DR of 0 listed. Maybe armor has DT, and clothes have DR. Some "sturdy" clothes will give you a bit of DR but most will give you nothing.

Or maybe they're using old builds for the demos?

Pretty sure it's a bug considering Josh confirmed that New Vegas doesn't use DR.

You can not ever rely on Demo Builds for what this game (or most others) are going to have in the final mix.
