Torches - seriously

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 2:03 pm

I need torches. I put up a post a while ago and posters said they were all over the place in dungeons. I have played another 20hrs or so and still have not found 1 torch. Had 3-4 that i found at the very beginning of the game that i used up quite a while ago. I DO NOT want to use the candlelight spell, personally i find it annoying, i just want to use torches.

Is there a difference between the "dungeons" that everyong says have torches all over the place and most of the other caves, holds, etc. that are locations to explore. perhaps torches are only in actual "dungeons" and i have not been to any.

Can you just buy torches anywhere???? Would gladly pay for them but i have never seen a merchant with any?

THX!!!

Give torches to your companion. They will use them I hear. I use a candle spell

Love to have a helmet with a constant light spell on it

You can take them off their sconces in dungeons...

Only some, though. Some are bolted to walls, and they can't be removed. But a majority of the torches in dungeons can be removed and used by you. It's very easy to get WAY too many torches.

I had a very hard time finding torches as well. I would love it if you could buy them at general stores.

Some random NPCs carry torches though, but not that many as you've probably noticed.

the torches they're talking about seem to appear really random
most wall mounted torches can't be taken off
but some in random places can

also guards have torches :flame:
as do the companions (just ask them to follow than trade with them)

They are usually on walls, and labeled a "torch sconce." You'd probably have more luck with looking for them in towers than in caves, and you could probably find some in the castles and keeps of each of the Holds.

You can otherwise sometimes find them on the corpses of various bandits and NPCs, as well.

Cannot recall if I've seen one that was purchasable, but I would think that you could occasionally find them in the inventories of some shop owners under the "Misc." category. But as I said, I can't recall if I've seen one as purchasable.

If you're running vanilla settings, you don't really need to use torches; it's never dark enough.

Pinewatch has plenty of torches, do they respawn? I assume so.

Thats what i'm experiencing. All of the torches i see are bolted to the wall and can not be removed. I grabbed 3 or 4 in the first place you escape from in the beginning of the game (can't remember the name) and have not seem another that i can pick up or remove from the wall since.

Working mines are a good place for wall mounted torches. Also a place I know that has at a minimum 20 is Broken Oar grotto north of solitude. Also, hot key the torch and every once in a while de-equip it, this will reset its burn time. done well and 1 torch could last you the whole game.

I didn't know you could take them off walls. No wonder I have so many. I wasn't looking closely and assumed I just had the ability to extinguish them for stealth purposes.

There are a few places where it gets dark enough to use a torch, but most of the time I find it pointless and I'm not a fan of how the weather effects change the colour of the light from torches.

It is for me. There have been a bunch of dungeons where I had to use a torch.

??? Do you think i would be asking if it was never dark enough? :shakehead:

I don;t walk around with a torch out but after clearing a few rooms or areas i break out the torch while i am looting. There are a lot of dark corners and crevaces that have item tucked away. I have found a ton of things that i never would have seen without a bright torch.

I think it says "use/take sconce" or something like that.
I'd like to use lanterns instead of just selling them. Maybe combine them with charcoal and that could be an alternative light source and last longer than a torch.

I've gotten a few from merchants, or from people I've killed. Rarely see any just lying around in the environment.

Yup, it does say something like that but i have not seen that since that first location. I have put my cursor over a ton of wall mounted torches and have no seen that again.

Torches are both very useful in Skyrim and it would be really cool to have one that just burned forever or could be filled up or something.

Another thing about torches in Skyrim: they provide an enormous amount of atmosphere. The mystique and excitement in caves, ruins and what not benefit greatly from walking through them with a torch. It's almost weird that there isn't an overabundance of torches in Skyrim, just so the developers could show off.

I didn't like the torches and I rarely see them. What I found best and LOVE is the candle light spell, and the Mage Light spell. They are awesome! The mage light is probably my favorite spell of all!

They also have weight again, unlike in Oblivion. Half of a pound, now.

I'd ended up gathering so many torches from bandits I'd killed and other NPCs I'd pick-pocketed, and I noticed that I was able to carry less loot as usual until I noticed how much weight I'd been carrying in torches and promptly dumped them all in storage except for four.

Really? Because I had to turn my brightness setting up in the game, on account of everything still being too dark with using a torch.

Pro tip: What you experience isn't what everyone else experiences. Think about it a little.

the basemant area (forget name) in the college has them on the walls that u can remove as well as many mines...did u check belethors goods in whiterun? he has alot of misc. goods

torches have weight this time around so i stick with candelight because torches only last a few mins n some caves are vast n dark, requiring many

Go to Embershard Mine southwest of Riverwood. There's like 5-6 in the first part you can take off the wall.

They do respawn as well I can confirm, not sure how long.
