Torches

I want it to be almost pitch black at night, and in dungeons, so torches are more necessary than in previous Bethesda games. I never needed to light a torch in MW or OB

I disagree, in some cases yes, although i would like it if they had say, torches/laterns etc on wall mounts/ledges that you could leave, take, or place a torch in a wall mount, if you wanted it lit up or dark, otherwise if you were a stealth character then it would be too hard to kill people but sneaking up on them if you couldnt see them.

It depends. On a night with the moon not obscured by clouds it would be pretty bright, especially in a snowy area. Caves should be a bit darker though, as well as cloudy nights.

I did this in oblivion by turning the brightness down... its much more immersive/creepy.

also, only be able to light a torch when you have a flame sorch ie campfire, tinderbox..

pulling out a flaming torch from your pocket is too convienient...

I'd like different dungeons to have different levels of light.. so some you're pretty much crippled without your own source, others you can get by.

Same for different weather conditions at night.

I found much more need for light in Oblivion than Morrowind (especially with a deadly trap mod..) so maybe they're taking it more seriously.

Agreed! As someone who lives around snow 8 months out of the year. I can tell you that when the moon is out and there is snow on the ground, you dont even need a flash light, it is bright out.

But i do think caves could be a little darker.

Nice poll

Anyway...

I wouldn't want it to be pitch black (or relatively close to it) at night (whether it's moonless or not) because:

- It's very very tiresome for the eyes.
- I personally want to enjoy the landscape, even at night. Only seeing a few feet in front of me with a torch or spell is not enjoying the landscape according to me.
- If you don't have a torch or haven't learned a spell (and are in a fight so you can't rest), how will you manage to see?

It may be realistic, but because of the above reasons, I wouldn't want nights almost completely dark. However, I would definitely want them to be darker than Oblivion's, but not as dark as some people say in this thread.
Dungeons can be darker than outside at nights though. They should be. The closed spaces make torches especially useful there. Still... not pitch-black, definitely not. But still definitely a lot darker than Oblivion's dungeons.

How would you have it, then? Light as in "http://img816.imageshack.us/img816/5651/oblivion201006110755294.jpg"?
That blue shade made you feel like a predator. The only color that could've been cooler is red, but that would've been to sci-fi. Now you feel like a magical predator. :)

Agree. While it should be darker, it would be annoying if it was too dark. But I would be happy if Skyrim is darker than OB, since torches, light and night eye didn't really have a point if you're not searching for something small in the dark, or have the sun shining in your eyes behind your monitor.

Agreed, caves should be pitch black. On the other hand if they're occupied by bandits or marauders it makes sense they're lit. As for dungeons hmm...Ayleid crystals made sense to me,what will happen with Skyrims dungeons,we'll see.

Snow Elf (Falmer) Ice crystals, Of course, the bandits light sources should be able to be extinghishued, so if you have night vision, you take out their torches, lock the door behind you and start picking them off :ninja:

No thanks, "cinimatic" nights is good enough, anything darker is more annoying then immersive.

i dont know how they should do it, and i do understand why it was blue like that.its just it was SOO annoying, simple fix really. i don't like it i wont use it, if theres no need for it, which there shouldn't be because its never pitched black therefor it shouldn't be in skyrim.

Lol, awesome idea on the turning down the brightness. I'll have to try it. I've been playing Oblivion lately, so I'll have to give it a try.

Would you advise turning the brightness down for the whole game, so that nights too are dark, or just when inside dungeons?

THIS! and I AGREE!
Its definitely one of the big problems in TES series that needs to be fixed and already in the vanilla game.

hits with a burning torch could leave some pretty messy burn marks on a goblins face...
