Just think you are a member of The Dark Brotherhood or some other evil faction and the use of torture to gain info for a quest.......

Well, they had a light version of that in Oblivion, when you had to beat a member of the Blackwood Company for information.

I'm talking about the use of objects such as rope, calipers, hot pokers, forks, spoons....yes spoons!

Blackwood Ring of Silence! Though the Blackwood Company just used on themselves much like a suicide pill to prevent the enemy from gathering information.

If it's appropriate for the specific quest, then sure. I remember having the option of torturing an Argonian in the Fighter's Guild questline. It shouldn't just be some universal method of obtaining information though.

It one thing to beat someone up for info (this is ok)
But tearing out fingernails/mutilation is a no no.

Having your eyes spooned out would either kill the game or be epic xD

Well if you were a Necromancer or some really evil character, then you would have no morals and this would be acceptable for you. They would have to add points to your infamy and people would steer clear of you.

Torture isn't evil.If it is evil then every church, kingdom or political faction from the beginning of humanity to 1949 is evil.

I don't mind it in the world, alluded to and so on (like in Oblivion), but no, I don't have the stomach for seeing my character do it and Bethesda doesn't need the bad press for making a torture simulator.

EDIT: And yes, the act of torture is absolutely evil. Good people may do it for good reasons, but that doesn't make it any less terrible.

indeedy each person is an end in themselves not a means to one and should be treated as such, anyhoo id say maybe beating people but not mutilation and whatever version of waterboarding the nords have, thats going a bit far. The torture would be more disturbing if it was implied rather than actually shown, ones imagination is usually worse than reality (in some cases)

That wasn't torture. At least not according to the 'enhanced interrogation methods' approved by the US government. :sb:

All TES has hints of torture and other bizarre stuff, but it's never explicit; nor are you an active participant.
I prefer to keep it that way. Too much realism, combined with themes like that is just wrong.

I don't know if you guy's remember Soldier of Fortune2 and Carmageddon2.
They were all about showing what games can do, but we're already long passed that phase imo.

Mainstream games should have some self-moderation in their content, just to keep everyone happy.
I don't think a lot of people want to be 'invited' or forced to participate in torture.

I think there should be a quest where they let you torture somebody for information, however if you do torture them the info they give is false and you fail the quest.

Don't see why not if it is necessary for story or side quests. To just have an animation for senseless torture would be pointless though.
