Total Caps Value of the Wasteland

Post » Thu Apr 23, 2009 9:49 am

I was wondering... assuming you did every possible quest for a caps reward, picked up and sold every weapon, armor, plant, scorched book, and tin can... how much caps approx could one accrue? Are we talking over 1 million? Just curious how fat one's wallet can potentially get in this game? Any gamers willing to share the max caps they've ever had without cheating?

I only cheat to run tests..
However if you did not buy a single thing in game and sold everything but one gun.
It would amass quite quickly, basic charisma and barter gets you roughly half the asking price from traders.

On a normal run, where I buy ammo constantly, and keep most weapons, armour and misc as spares.
I run around 20'000 caps minimum as I hit Narnia NV on a linear path.
Make this up again within a day or so more playing and looting around the city.

Take out the cost, and if I sold everything using the respawn glitch you could treble that easily.

I'm not going to say a million total, but I dare say at least one person has reached that at some point or will do.

Oh geez, If I hadn't have bought anything, I'd easily have three or four hundred thousand caps. If I sold all my stored equipment in my three Nipton homes, I'd likely have double that. If I'd have picked up every piece of armor, ammo, and weapon, and sold all non essential equipment i'm currently carrying, who knows how many more caps I would have...likely near a million by now.

BTW: I'm 104 hours into my second character. I honestly don't think there would be any hard limit on how many caps you can make during a runthrough, I think it would depend on how long you care to play and how much effort you're willing to put into becoming obscenely rich. Myself, I've got around two hundred thousand caps at the moment, and am still looking for ways to blow it. Maybe I'll just dump them all into Lake Mead and start over. Can I even do that?

Most caps I got without cheating. (I don't cheat anyways)
50142 caps- Level 33
42356 caps- Level 19
In all of that, I spent like 30,000-100,000 caps, so yeah.

By not cheating, you mean adding caps or additems that you sell for caps, right?

I have over 400 hours on about 3 characters. Haven't tried to figure out how many hours on the present one but I have about a quarter million. Since the game never really ends and I'm now starting to play mods I guess it all depends on how long I'll play this character before i tire of him.

If I had sold everything I picked up (I don't bother with anything under at least two thousand caps) I'd probably have double that. The limiting factor is the time it takes merchants to respawn their caps. Also consider that some items are traded for consumables like aid and ammo items and not caps.

I think if you were playing your character for the express purpose of getting rich (and that would include gambling) and developed your role playing to those ends that a reasonable amount would be 1.5 to 2 million before you'd be bored to death.

I'm always short of caps. I never have quite enough to buy the weapons and equipment I really need. Might be to do with the way I am playing.

This is good. Means the game is quite balanced.

I have almost 300k (I've been buying HE missiles (100 each) and HE 25 mm Grenades (20 each) buy the truckload though) and i still have a lot of valuable things in my house, including gold. I have around 250k on my other character, so I definitely think it's possible to hit 1mil. It would just take really long.

Well without using the console, i've got about 4 million caps mostly from winnings at the Ultra Luxe. However I created a mod increasing the Max Winnings and Max Bets at the casinos that's how I achieved this. I don't consider it cheating I won those caps fair and square, i've also lost a ton of caps by placing a million cap bet on a single game of blackjack

I've got over 50 grand at 30th lev...that's after picking up most everything I've come across, and selling the better part of it. Minus uniques, a set of each faction clothing or two, and crafting items.

Well my general looting character made it to 40k caps by level 20, after buying Mk 2 armour (x2) several weapons and a lot of ammo (Gun Runners be expensive too) so I'm guessing...lots?

I want to make a kleptomaniac character next, he shall buy nothing and own only one thing and take EVERYTHING with value, even if it's one cap. I shall max speech and barter along with sneak and then find out just how much the mojave is worth...don't hold your breath though, it'll be a few weeks before I'm done with that.

By not chaating, do you mean not going to every casino with 10 Luck and getting kicked out after less then 15 minutes of Blackjack?

He went to more than one casino. But all casinos combined in the game isn't enough to give you 85000 caps.

If you roll up close to the casino's limit, then go play slots at max bet and hit 3 oranges, the payout of 32000 caps at each casino could easily net you 100,000 plus. I wasn't even trying this with a 10(+) luck character and almost did it by mistake. I got 3 oranges at 3 casinos out of 5.

-Gunny buying a lot of cigars with his jackpot.

Don't forget the Sierra Madre. It's limit is 10,000 chips but you cash out your chips for pre-war money 1 chip = 1 pre-war money, which is worth around 10 caps each back in the Mojave. It takes a little time to launder it through merchants but you can net around 100,000 caps if you have a decent Barter.

My characters tend to be cash-poor until they have all the implants they need, however once that happens I tend to rapidly exceed 200K without really trying.

The Jury-Rigging perk makes amassing huge fortunes rather trivial, as it lets me turn a beat-up 300-cap suit of armor into a full-CND suit of Combat Armor worth 5-6K or more, or a couple of dirt cheap Varmint Rifles into a full-CND AMR or Hunting Rifle worth several thousand caps. The fact some enemies endlessly respawn doesn't help either, as every few days I can harvest the Fiends in the South Vegas Ruins and haul out anywhere from 15-20K in Energy Weapons or a similar haul in conventional arms by hunting Jackals in the SW portion of the map.

Enemies (and their valuable weapons) respawn and the caps of vendors are refreshed every few days, therefore the amount of caps in the Wasteland is infinite.
