Total freeze when entering Xedilian (Shivering Isles) sectio

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 10:34 am

This is a weird game breaker. I've already completed the Xedilian quests and moved on in the main quest. For some reason, now it's freezing my system (I've only been able to get to the task manager and shut off the game once - the other times I had to resort to the power button) when I try to enter the section of overland map containing Xedilian. It happens if I attempt to fast travel, and it happens if I just walk up to it.

I'm not aware of any changes that have been made to my game settings, or my video or audio drivers, since visiting Xedilian in the past.

Is this bug anything that has come up before? If not, is there a generic way of potentially fixing it? Some way of refreshing the game's data on that map area for instance?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by freeze? Still image, BSoD, black screen, what exactly? The kind of freeze will help a lot.

It's a still image. Sometimes I can get the mouse to pop up on the screen, but I can't usually access anything else. The one time I was able to bring up the task manager, Oblivion was "not responding" and I was able to shut it down by ending it in the processes tab.

It seems like it's some sort of corrupted save, because if I go way back to a save inside of Xedilian and leave, I can return to the area normally. Every previous save from after I left Xedilian has this problem. Unfortunately, that's *way* back there for what I've done in the game since - I'm just not going to go back to the point.

Is there at least an online map that points out precisely where this external area begins and ends? I hate to do it, but if it's between replaying dozens of hours of the game, including grueling leveling, and just dropping large objects on the ground to warn me away from the area, I'll go with the latter.

Any other solutions?

You can try going away from the area, and staying away for four game days. If it happens to be a problem with something that respawns, that might fix it.

Well, I went and tried waiting for the respawn -- still the same problem.

Then I got ambitious and used the construction set to make a mod that laid down an ugly perimeter fence. I tried walking around the fence, but discovered that when I got to certain areas, it was sort of random whether it would freeze or not. It's always safe on the road going south to Xedilian until the last tree arch over the road. It always freezes when I get right to where the stairs branch off (the exact place where the mapmarker object is in the construction set). I tried going west around my fence, and one time it froze a certain spot - the next time it didn't. Walked by another place and seemed fine - turned around and went back for the freeze.

I'm not entirely sure why the error locations should vary within a certain vicinity. Perhaps it has to do with a wandering creature of some sort?
