Total War Discussion

Some fixes would be good. I seem to remember banging my head against the wall at some of the AI in medieval 2. Especially in castles

Ah, yes. Sometimes when I have archers on a wall I have soldiers in front of them but sometimes the archers will straight up shoot the soldiers in the back of the head, it happend in RTW too. Or my favorite, when I order my soldiers to engage the enemy on top of the walls after the enemy gets ladders up to me when the enemy breaks off and climbs back down the ladders my soldiers will do that same and abandon the walls to pursue the enemy on the ground >:(

Just figured I'd mention that the Shogun 2: Total War demo is available on Steam now, and warn that in accordance with Total War tradition it's kind of huge.

The AI in the Shogun 2 demo is... not really good, compared to, just like in Empire and Napoleon, how much processing power the game svcks up. Several flat-out mistakes in the historical battle - infantry just... standing there while other units get slaughtered and commanded around it - and the occasional complete dropout where the AI neglects battle positioning completely.

The campaign demo was ridiculous. Yes, we know what Total War plays like on the big map. There's not much of a difference in this iteration.

Don't think that this will be an instant buy, really. Back to Medieval 2.

Only played Medieval, recently downloaded it of off steam because they were having a sale. I love it so far, the AI is terrible but the epic scale of battles is awesome.
Of the world Wars I think WW1 would work for a total war game, and it would be the next age after empire.

All of the battles are scripted in the demo. No actual AI is being used. In fact, basically everything is scripted in the demo. Campaign, the historical battle, etc. The purpose of this demo was not to prove how the final game is going to be, but more of what changes were made and just a little teeny preview of the game itself. The code is not final, and this iteration is only being used in the demo. Was that way for NTW and ETW too.

And don't say it hasn't changed much from NTW. The entire campaign portion of the game has been re-worked and re-presented to us in a way that is almost completely different from NTW. Really, the only similarities remaining are the fact that both games use a very nice looking 3d map in the campaign portion.

I'm looking forward to the game, but I'm not sure my current computer will handle it as I'd like.

Got the Shogun 2 demo yesterday. This has potential to be the best Total War yet. Definite day 1 buy from me.

I don't know if there is a demo, but you can try this http://forums.totalwar.com/showthread.php/119-Frequently-Asked-Questions-and-Game-Fixes for Rome TW. :read:

Have they released requirements for the new game? I really don't mind playing on the lowest setting (not preferable but still...) but all I want is for my comp to run it smoothly. Choppiness in TW games svcks the worst IMO.

Yeah, the demo would give you a pretty good idea of how the full game will run.

Unless it is like the ETW demo, which ran better for me on my computer than the full game (older computer).

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this way. Empire and Napoleon were just broken in my opinion. They need to take two steps back (to Medieval II) and then a step forward working from that. Working from Empire is a bad idea. We're getting awesome set pieces, and visuals and promises of deep diplomacy and real-time strategy, it all looks right, and should feel right, awesome, in fact... but it all just falls short of actually feeling complete.

Medieval II and Kingdoms have been on my system longer than any other game I've owned. I'll be watching the TW forums before parting with my cash, Empire sat on my shelf unplayed for almost a month after purchasing it because it simply would not run, and was bugged up the butt, to say nothing of the skewed easy difficulty and totally knackered diplomacy. Napoleon, I waited a few weeks after release before buying it, Shogun I'll avoid until I see it in a bargain bin.

Thanks. I was posting from my phone at school as a few guys and myself were discussing TW games between classes.

It would appear I just meet the minimum processor requirements. Hmmm....

I tried the demo and I really didn't like it. It felt more arcade style-ish or that I was fighting my battles from one of those table maps that all the generals stand around, which is stupid, I think. It didn't feel like I was really part of the action, and I will say that the arrow graphics REALLY irritate me. Actually, ALL of those little helper graphics (the arrows pointing where the unit is going, the field of view thing, etc.) irritated me. With Medieval 2 and Rome, it felt like I was back in olden thymes commanding huge armies to glorious victory, this just felt like, again, more arcadey.

Big Total War sale on steam, might want to check it out if you're a fan. Empire is going for $7.50.

Yeah I'd totally pounce on that, but I own 'em all except for Shogun 2 soo... it would be pretty pointless.

I've asked this elsewhere with no reply:

Does a mod exist for M2TW that makes units behave in combat the way RTW units do? In M2TW two units fighting each other will only engage their front lines, and the rest stay back waiting their turn. In RTW they all try to engage the enemy, trying to get as many individuals in that unit to fight the enemy at the same time.

Going from M2TW back to RTW for a nostalgic game made me realize just how much I prefer the RTW style of combat. M2TW's is artificially longer, and I feel I could make better use of two-handed units if I could mod unit behavior.

I don't want a total mod, just a combat mod.

I would suggest that if you are looking to retain most of the vanilla game.
