Totally, separate, pauldrons.

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 11:13 am

it DOEEES say that it has been simplified, but it DOESS read like one of those irritatingly stupid things that journalists say without thinking (or knowing that it will cause a shizstorm on the forums for the next month)

Yeah it looks like it could be a mistake... Also I don't know whether this proves anything, but when a lot of gaming websites have released their article reporting the new info the 'armour simplification' is never (judging by the 3/4 articles I've seen) mentioned...

Could mean that they perhaps know that this is wrong? Or we are the only people that have interpreted the PSM statement in that way? But obviously that's not as much evidence to go on as the screens but you still can't really tell either way yet... the other sites could just have omitted it from their own articles by mistake or whatever... not that much of a big deal for me though.

It actually looks like the cuirass has small pauldrons as a base, on top of which new pauldrons can be equipped. You can still see the base pauldron of the cuirass underneath the pointy one.
I'm still not completely sold, since Fallout 3 had Raider armors that all looked the same except for some slight variations, like different pauldrons or one pauldron less etc. But it does seem like good evidence, and for now I'm pretty excited too. :) Also, the pauldron actually looks very different than the rest of the armor, like it's made from another material. That also points to customizable pauldrons.

I noticed that one can hope its a good sign for customizable armor. I did not much care for the armor setup in Fallout I hope they make the option similar to Morrowind without making your character to overpowered if you wear a full set of armor or to underpowered if you choose to wear a pauldron on your right shoulder a glove on your right hand and a paur of boots and pants.

Did you ever stop and think that maybe some types of armour have different pauldrons?

I just read the magazine article, guys. Not to rain on anyone's parade here, but it distinctly mentions armor sets will now be single suits, rather than seperate parts. I'm really hoping it's inaccurate, because [censored], that would svck bad.

Unless it has actually been disproven already, in which case, never mind. That'd be a huge relief.

Pretty much disproven right there, at least to the extent of how Fallout handled armor anyway.

Let's switch settings to Skyrim, and imagine how this could work on armor. One day, you find a set of leather armor. It has its usual stats, and it is the same as most other leather armors out there. Along your travels, you happen to find a bear skull. You decide to hold on to it, and take it and the set of leather armor to the leatherworker in town. One thing you can do is combine the leather armor and the bear skull, and you get a variant of leather armor that has slightly more armor bonuses than the usual sets of leather armor you come across. The bear skull is harder than leather, and it offers more protection. To keep things consistent, the bear skull visibly shows up as part of your armor when you wear it, and is placed upon one of your shoulders.

It really doesn't matter whether or not it's armor or weapons. It has the same customization possibilities for both.

This idea fits very well with the concept of smithing (modifying pieces of armor and weaponry).
Personally, I'd love to see that.

I think Proditus might be right. I hope not, though. Assuming the PSM article isn't mistaken, it only makes sense that you get generic suits that you can modify like New Vegas weapons. I really don't think that system will offer enough variety. Here's hoping that it's more like Morrowind. I don't want to get my hopes up too high, though.

Separate pauldrons? Would be really nice to see them back again in some way. I didn't like how they were part of the cuirass in Oblivion. Of course I also didn't like how axes were considered blunt weapons in Oblivion either. And for that matter...where did spears and crossbows go to in Oblivion? Certain things shouldn't really be dumbed down just because its convenient.

i hope, i guess it's just because one of the scans was more of an empty yellowish plain looking towards a city. In which the empty yellowness reminded me of fallout, and so did the over-the-shoulder 3rd person camera.

after I see more and more screens, I'm thinking we might be able to customize our armor a bit, the two examples in the OP, the two armors are the exact same, but the skull thingy seems to be added on top of the left steel pauldren from the bald guy pic, though that might be a way to distinguish the seperate Nord tribes.
