trail gun vs brush gun

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 8:53 pm

ok i was wondering if the brush gun is gliched. reason why i am asking is that as far as dmg wise brush is greater than the trail gun, BUT i seem to be doing more dmg with the trail gun as far as watching hit points go down on npcs. Was wondering if im just imagining things or is it that the trail is greater than the brush? i love the brush but it dosent sem to have the kick as the trail gun. and yes i do have cowboy perk and guns are 100 and do have the stat requirements. am i going crazy?

Trail Carbine has a slightly larger magazine and more shots per second, so if your accuracy isn't great it can be better. Another explanation might be that you're using hollow point ammo for the Trail Carbine, but that doesn't seem very likely.

Brush gun does 113 damage with an Adjusted Crit + Reload DPS of 94 with Cowboy and handloads.
Trail Carbine does 72 damage with an Adjusted Crit + Reload DPS of 69 with Cowboy and handloads.

With both using the same ammo effects from the semi-wadcutters, then the brush gun does even better with it's high base damage against armored targets:

Brush gun does 99 dam and adjcrit+reload DPS of 84 with cowboy and handloads against 15DT.
Trail Carbine does 59 dama and ACRDPS of 57 with cowboy and handloads against 15DT.

Either your game's gone wonky or it's just a case of perception. You perceive the Trail Carbine is doing better, but it's really not.

ED-it: Sorry, fat-fingered the brush gun base damage. Now correct.

There is a glitch for the brush gun where the bullets don't actually hit your target, or when you shoot them they take a 90 degree angle or something. Either way the bullet won't hit the target sometimes making it appear worse.

I don't have this glitch so I always use the brush gun.

Yes it is. It is also not germane to his question.

True, but I like to spread the message of the Medicine Stick as far as I can.

On Topic: I never used the Trail Carbine much(even with the scope) and I always hand my Brush Gun off to Cass as soon as I get one. Though from what little experience I have had with these two weapons I personally like the Brush Gun more. I've never felt the need to use it in VATS and haven't had any problems with it. The Trail Carbine can fire two extra shots, has a little over triple the HP, has lower requirements and its ammo isn't quite as rare. The Trail Carbine is more useful in earlier stages, though it'll probably be quickly replaced by the Hunting Rifle. The Brush Gun which is more powerful, has a higher DPS, weighs less and has a higher crit damage will be more useful later on when you start facing Deathclaws and either Legion veterans or Ranger veterans...or both.

I'd say ignore the Trail Carbine, give the Brush Gun to Cass and use a fully modded Hunting Rifle instead.

this, i have noticed with assassins, that i could prettymuch be 5 feet away and shot 3 times and not see any dmg taken...thought maybe it was just their armor absorbing the dmg. mmm if its a bug, any way to fix it?

I have that glitch, and it svcks. There is one other glitch as well, the glitch in VATS where your guy just stands there frozen for about 2 minutes and your enemy can just kick the crap out of you. It happens with weapons other than the brush gun too, but it seems to happen most often with the brush gun.

As for the Trail Carbine, I always liked the it with the scope but that's just me. It is a decent mid to long range weapon once you have the scope though, and it is a better long range weapon than the brush gun.

I'm a true grit cowboy but I don't use either of these weapons. I LOVE revolvers....I feel naked without some sort of revolver as my primary weapon.

Love the mysterious magnum with realistic gunshot sound mod-----it has the sound from the dirty harry movies instead of that dull slap sound.

Love Lucky and even the fully modded .357, just so bad ass.

Hunting Revolver and Ranger Seqoiua are just so righteous.

But if I had to choose between the trail carbine, brush gun, and medicine stick.....then I choose La Lounge Carabine w/ .357 JFP, it's like a trail carbine but better.
I really have no idea what the big deal is about the medicine stick, it just does a little but more damage and the iron sight isn't even that great, I don't even use iron sights since I only fight in third person.

*snip*

The Trail Carbine can mount a scope, however. So, for a good stealth cowboy character that likes to keep the range open, the TC is an awesome weapon.

Main thing for the Medicine Stick is that it's sighted correctly, while the Brush Gun has some Kentucky Windage to deal with. Also, the Stick is cleaned up and polished. The extra damage is just gravy.

I prefer taking and using the Trail gun on my non-Legion runs, mainly because there is something damn annoying about the Brush gun not hitting targets and the only way to have it hit one is to constantly use VATS

Well it is pretty much an exact copy of the gun Deckard uses in Blade Runner.

My Ranger Vet's primary weapon is the Medicine Stick and when I run out of AP I "Quickdraw" the Ranger Sequoia and then "Run n Gun" untill my AP regens. The Trail Carbine is just there to hold you over untill you get enough 45-70 SWC Hand Load ammo for the these weapons.

I'd probably give a brush gun/medicine stick to raul if the ammo wasn't so rare

Quartermaster Bardon at Hoover Dam sells like 300-400 rounds at a time.

Trail carbine.

I don't give a [censored] about stats. I kill everything just as easily as with a brush gun. But I like the trail carbine more so it wins.

Agreed. I only like scopes when I'm sniping from very long ranges. Anything else, I prefer the iron sights.

Unfortunately, the trail carbine's sights never did anything for me, so I stick with the brush gun, who's iron sights were too small and cramped.

But now with the medicine stick, everything is golden again. It's especially fun to take that to Zion as a Sneering Imperialist.
