Training/Free Mode?

The purpose of this area would be for enhancing and learning the SMART system as practice, with no enemies besides possibly bots or friends. Would really help newcomers with learning to use it, without having to be in campaign with limited chances, or in a real game where they can get slaughtered before they even get a chance.

I believe this is the purpose of challenge mode. It will tell you how to do things, then test you on them.

Go singleplayer, pick a map, pick a character, set up game with bots on easy/bots off (to explore the map)... Done.
This could be done in both W:ET and ET:QW (I think it even worked on the consoles as well)

+ Like shadow said: Challenge mode.

I think learning how to do to things in-game while you play is the only way it should be handled. It's also half the fun of playing new games. They will have bot matches, so if you aren't able to join a room with just you in it, you could just set the bots to easy difficulty and mess around.

Personally I think learning how the maps are outside of battle (I.e no bots) is a good way to get better at knowing the best ways to get around. (Without any pressure)

The challenge mode souns like enough, and learning how to do somthing in the heat of battle will be a fun experience-or a frustrating nightmare if im wrong.

"Learning" (read: getting steamrolled in) Bad Company 2 or Modern Warfare 2 is definately not fun. I guess BRINK won't be any different here.

Since it's a new IP, their won't be too many veterans out there. Ofcourse, you have the people accustomed with ET:QW and W:ET or iDtech4 games. I have a feeling that they will have less difficulty to adapt to this game, just a feeling though.

Mark you, there won't be a day one for everyone forever.

When I was trying to pick up Bad Company 2 'bout a month ago, I stopped after the first few matches. And since then I've only played it twice again. For one match each.

That's true.

Well, the R1-R4 block system and matchmaking will atleast attempt to put equally experienced players together.

In theory : yes ! In practice : no . Or not quite because few players are going to switch to Brink as it's not ET2 :P
If they knew they would have some sort of advantage engine-wise things might be different. Right now it's just wait and see what the "big" and "known" teams will do. If some of the top players switch to Brink, then and only then you will see a huge increase in players from ET (I don't really dare to say ETQW as well as I don't know the scene that well )

I was not talking about the amount of people switching over, I was saying that they'll just have a slight advantage if they do. They don't get dropped into a whole new concept because they know how to deal with the objectives and they already have a playstyle for such games. If you come from COD, you'll have a harder time to adapt than when you come from games like ET:QW. This obviously counts only in the very first days after release. This is ofcourse an assumption and doesn't count for everyone.

Indeed.

A lot will also depend on wether or not you already played gametypes requiring you to do a mission or objective ( search and destroy in COD games , stopwatch /objective in ET , attack/defend (?) in TF etc etc)

Besides that you will have to take "natural talent and gamesense" into account ofcourse ;)

there is a training mode, this is what the devs have said:

“Our challenges are entire scripted levels, which you can play solo or co-op. An example of one is a level we call “MEDIC!”, where you play as a medic on a team, where your only job is to keep the other team-members alive, while they complete core objectives. The trick to doing well in this challenge is being smart about who you revive, and when you revive them. If you win, you’ll unlock something cool, as well as a tougher difficulty level. And if you beat that difficulty level, you’ll unlock more cool stuff and difficulty levels.

And once you’ve truly mastered all the challenges (which are fun mini-games in their own right), you’ll have unlocked tons of great stuff, and you’ll have learned a lot of the skills you need to do well online.”

Each challenge has 3 levels - the 1st one is easy, the 2nd one is a bit more difficult, and the 3rd one "Is a ****in' [censored] to complete" (Rahdo's exact words) The 3rd level is designed to be hard for the developers themselves, but after you complete level 3 then there is a leaderboard to try to work your way up as well.

sweetness, i assume the unlocks will be clothes/armor/facepaint etc and MABEY a weapon or two and probably some xp thrown in there. and mabey some sort of perk like if you master the medic challange/challanges you heal abit more health or revive faster or somthing like that but only like 5% more heals but i doubt they will do that.

No buffs that I am aware of, and the clothing is earned as you level up. So challenge rewards will mostly be experience, weapons, and weapon upgrades. If i remember correctly, many of the weapons can only be earned by completing certain challenges, but once you do its unlocked for all your characters.

I hope the Tier 3 challenges do NOT unlock weapons, then.

Because if they're supposed to be hard for developers, that would totally cancel out the casual players.

So what do you think they should be used to unlock?
