Trains in the mountains

I'd rather have Dog Sleds! THAT I think would be cool & make more sense setting-wise (at least in the continuously snowy areas).

Hehe...
Sleds made of dogs.

What the heck is wrong with you people saying what Century Oblivion and Skyrim are in?

you do realize the TES universe has been like that for HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of years right?

TES is not earth

Hello! I was just thinking about skyrim ( which I've been doing for a loooong time) and considered the many ways of transport there oculd be implemented.
Looking at countries like Switzerland who have mountains with vast tunnel systems and the reappearance of dwarfs and dwemers and all that,
I don't think it's impossible there will be trains or train tracks(plus we're 200 years after oblivion. There could well be some technological improvement).

Please let me know what you think about wqays of transport and if you'd like there to be trains or locomotives.

mwahahahahaha... 'iaq.

this is not fable laddy...

I think that The Elder Scrolls is a world that shares similarities with our own past and cultures (Imperials, nords, swords and spears alchemy, to name a few) but exists in its own fantastical sphere which is entirely pre-industrial...

At least I hope so..

MUNDUS isn't EARTH. TAMRIEL Isn't AMERICA. NIRN isn't HEAVEN. DAEDRIC REALMS aren't ALTERNATE UNIVERSES (Meh. They are). HORSES aren't CARS. TES TIMELINES Aren't REAL TIMELINES. TES TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES aren't OUR TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES. Trains? TRAINS!?!?!?!?!?! Your Wish Is In Another Game. If you didn't understand any of this stuff then lt me say this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zNjQecyjE8.

NOOOOO!

Seriously, for over 3000 7000 years there have been (almost, the Dwemer advanced a bit, but that dissapeared quick as hell) NO TECHNOLOGIC ADVANCEMENT AT ALL (in the TES universe)! Why the hell would it suddenly advance to TRAINS in 200 years? Especially in 200 years when civilization seems to be going down the drain, with the Empire falling apart and all.

Also, seriously, why do you want to ruin the TES series? Then we have to look for a new company to do all this over A-M**********************-GAIN!

Dwemer had airships.

Seriously, for all the automatic hate against the subject, its really not to far off to think the Dwemer used some sort of railroad system.
If it still works after all this time is another question.

I'll admit a lack of knowledge of the lore but...... would the fallout (no connection intended) of the Dwemer civilization's collapse engender any "anti-technology" attitudes among the current races/nations? Something like that, combined with reasonably easy access to magic, could easily keep a world from going through the rapid invention cycles that ours did.

(And all of that, of course, ignores the part where It's Just A Game. And the designers want it to be a certain way. And that, no, it doesn't have to be "realistic" and follow development paths similar to Earth's.)

Yes, thats one of the primary reasons why there isnt a rush in developement. for someone not spot on Lore you hit the nail right on the head, in Lore the Races view the Dwemer as a smart but Arrogant bunch, and even though they did amazing things they got their just desserts when they were Godsmacked (wheter Aedra, Daedra, or Lorkhans heart it all counts as a godsmack)

No why should there be trains ....

I mean The Elder Scrolls are setted in a very 'high magic' world, nearly everyone can learn the basis of Magic, why do you need 'trains' while Recall and Mark Spells are plenty , where Magicial Transporters are pretty normal .....

That we are livin' on a world wich lacks magic, yes ..... Than you need alternatives ....

hmmm... there are things like steam powered "robots", but still, trains would really disrupt the vibe of TES. It kinda sounds like something that would work better in Fable.

Since dwemer technology can be used to justify any crazy modern-era invention around, why stop at trains? Why not just hop in the dwemer-mobile? Or take to the skies in dwemer-copter or dwemer-wing?

The Dovahkiin can be like a dwemer-powered Bruce Wayne, secretly living a hidden life in the dwemer cave, where he uses lost technology to fight crime (and illegal dragons)!

"Now Dovakhiin, to claim your true power you must climb the 7,000 steps. Or for 15 Septims, you can ride the Dwemer Inclined Railway to the top."

Yeah, no trains.

Not to mention coordinating attacks over the DwemerNet on his DwemerPad or his DwemerTooth headset.

I wouldn't be against trains really if they managed to fit into the setting successfully. Exact replica of steam train=no. Carriages on rails pulled by mammoth?

Somehow that's even worse than Dwemer trains...

In order to answer the OP I shall keep it simple - no trains.

On a more general note, I'm not trusting my transportation from A to B to any device of a race that somehow managed to plink itself out of existence. Who knows where I'd end up? No thanks, I'd rather walk.

How is the need for transportation of goods and people between settlements coupled with the accessibility of steam powered engines anything like a Dwemer powered Bruce Wayne?
Answer: its is not, it is overexageration into the ridiculous.

A Dwemer railroad would be a nice little touch in the game, especially if the tracks are largely missing and buried and there is no way at all to actually ride on it.

Furthermore, while it wont be in the vanilla game I think that a mod that introduces an ancient fast travel system akin to the propylon system in Morrowind, but Dwemer in nature would fit quite well.
Dwemer airships, Dwemer (underground) railroads, that kind of thing.

This irrational bashing of any idea that even touches on the subject is a little too zealoty for my taste.
Why not try and see an idea for its merits instead of shouting 'witch! witch!' and starting a pyre.

Technology's not a straight line. The Romans had internal plumbing, and to this day nobody has ever made concrete that is as good as theirs was, and we still don't know what they did to make it so sturdy.

Lol - Not Meant To Be A Factual Statement

1) We know Exactly how the Romans made their concrete - They used Volcanic Ash(high content of alumina and silica - like modern concrete) as the binding material instead of lime to improve upon previous concretes. And yes Roman concrete WAS BETTER than any concrete used regularly again until the 1800s.

2) Concrete made in labs today using the same materials and methods that we believe the romans used produce concrete with a compressive strength in the 2-10Mpa range. Modern concretes have a compressive strength in the 20-100 Mpa range. Concrete used in modern production is reinforced with steel(or fibers) to increase its naturally weak tensile strength. In short your basic run of the mill concrete used in cheap us buildings will have an order 2-10 times the compressive strength of Roman Concrete and several orders of magnitude greater tensile strength. High end concrete will have an order of magnitude improvement upon the basic modern concrete.
