Trains in the mountains

Post » Thu May 27, 2010 10:55 pm

Hello! I was just thinking about skyrim ( which I've been doing for a loooong time) and considered the many ways of transport there could be implemented.
Looking at countries like Switzerland who have mountains with vast tunnel systems and the reappearance of dwarfs and dwemers and all that,
I don't think it's impossible there will be trains or train tracks(plus we're 200 years after oblivion. There could well be some technological improvement).

Please let me know what you think about ways of transport and if you'd like there to be trains or locomotives.

I dont think anything like this would fit TES. I dont wanna see any tech in TES really. No steamboats, guns, or anything like that.

No oblivion was (in real some where around 12th century to the 14th century so skyrim will be around 14th or 16th century in real time) and trains were invent in mid 18th century so no we wont.

The Dwemer haven't reappeared, but their ruins will be in SR.

The game is set 200yrs. after OB; however, the province of SR is far more rugged than Cyrodil and in the midst of a civil war. In fact, the entire continent of Tamriel is in turmoil, due to the collapse of the empire. So, I don't think there will be any technological advancement, nor do I wish to see any.

As far as styles of transport, I'm satisfied with the inclusion of carriages, though mounts and boats would be nice.

Technology's not a straight line. The Romans had internal plumbing, and to this day nobody has ever made concrete that is as good as theirs was, and we still don't know what they did to make it so sturdy. The real reason that trains won't exist in Skyrim is, well, for one thing they completely go against the setting and the themes of the game. For another, it makes no sense for them to exist outside of, maybe, the odd Dwemer ruin. Mages don't do machinery, they do teleportation and such. The average uneducated joe doesn't do engineering, he chops wood and has lots of things to say about how annoying the local wildlife is. The lack of industry and interest in such things also predicates the absence of them. Fantasy with technology can be done, but it's just not a TES thing. Too much emphasis on mysticism and prophecy and subjective reality, and of course strict adherence to classic fantasy tropes.

TRAINS?
Why do people so continuously fail to understand the setting of TES? And excuse every outlandish idea with a mention of the dwemer?

OP, no. I do not think there should be trains. It wouldn't fit and there would be no appropriate logical explanation. Invoking the Dwemer is not sufficient.

To Pukis Bralis: Oblivion was not set in the 12th-14th century "real time". Its history and technological development are not anologous to real life history. In the in-universe history of the Elder Scrolls, the civilizations of the world have had roughly similar levels of technology for thousands of years, and they do not develop parallel to the real world.

The inclusion of steam trains makes pretty much any fantasy setting instantly better. It's not even that far-fetched considering the Dwemer.

They're just not going to be in the vanilla game though. Mod them in?.

Correct but the nordic lore skyrim is going for is around the 6-10th century i think.

Don't forget greek fire. We still can't make that.

Also there was this thing called the Dark Ages that probably saw a lost amount of informatino and technology.

No trains would not fit the setting and you cant just say there could be because dwemer had that technology THEY'RE DEAD!!! and there technology would not be seen outside there ruins and having train tracks just wouldn't work in my opinion.
I was hoping for mammoths to work like silt striders from morrowind as a fast travel option.

I thought it was quite an apt statement to be fair.

Spoogle, ignore Gregasaurus.

No trains, or similar. Tamriel should not advance with tech, it would change the whole feel of the game, which is so very important. It would also cross a barrier from which there would be no return. Maybe some Dwemer curiosities, but nothing actually usable. Any tech the Dwemer had should be oddities, the uses of which have been lost in time.

There is something fairly romantic about the idea of an advanced civilization having come before the era in which we play (such as much of Europe in 800AD patching up old Roman ruins, the original know-how lost, or much of the Dark Tower books), but society developing technology and using it is part of every day life would mean the end of TES.

Nirn =/= Earth. I sure hope that if TES 6 would be 800 years from the events of Skyrim.. that we wouldn't have flying cars!

NO TRAINS!

I'd rather have Dog Sleds! THAT I think would be cool & make more sense setting-wise (at least in the continuously snowy areas).

The Oblivion gate opened and the daedric train roared into town spewing foul smoke.... :obliviongate:

Seriously I don't think we need any trains. I don't care if the next game is set 5000 years after Skyrim, I still don't want to see any trains. No trains in TES! :sadvaultboy:

There is a carriage system in place as well as Oblivion style fast travel.

A network linking Dwemer ruins wouldnt be too far out there, though Id think it would more likely be an underground minecart system thing.
They had airships after all, It would be logical to have some sort of transport system between cities.
Something long forgotten recently discovered kinda thing.
Possibly a quest involved where you have to get some tracks cleared or an engine repaired.
I doubt it will be in the vanilla game though, but its a nice idea for a mod :)

I agree with this.

Also I think people should stop comparring the real worlds timeline and the timeline in ES. TES is a fantasy setting with it's own rules and it's own teckological advances. I don't think train or guns or anything similar in TES. Lets leave that to Fallout since Bethesda is allwed to make them now IMO.

Trains..mechanical devices etc..No thanks. We have enough JRPG`s around.

I don`t fancy Skyrim going Steampunk.
