Can't just copy it over. Part of the install is setting up various registry entries, that tell the O/S various things, and also some tools depend on to find the game, etc.

So, what I do..... is get steam installed, install JUST the base game, then overwrite that directory with my complete install backup. (better than 20 gig though... so, it takes a bit....) Works pretty good. :D

this -

and be sure to copy (...C:\Documents and Settings\Username...)\Local Settings\Application Data\Skyrim (mod lists)

and the folder with your saves, logs etc (...C:\Documents and Settings\UserName...)\My Documents\My Games\Skyrim by default

with that, you'll probably want them :-)

I wonder if you could simply make a copy of the Steam apps folder. With just SKyrim. INstall Steam on your PC and then copy the folder over to that.

Install Steam, copy over the Skyrim directory (\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim; by default). As long as the copied over directory correlates to a Steam Library Directory on the Steam install, then Steam will detect it as a installed game and verify the files. This means you won't have to download the base game again. Simply click the Install button under Skyrim in your Steam Library. It will check for data in the Steam Library before downloading from Steam servers.

I would also make a backup of the My Documents\My Games\Skyrim directory, just in case Steam has problems downloading Steam Cloud data.
