Transport, what is your opinion?

Post » Thu Jul 23, 2009 2:46 am

I was just reading all the how transit should work by map based stuff but arn't there any other options?

I can see how a map system would work, perhaps with random player/player encounters (kinda lol if you're traveling into a party though - 1v10, would be kool if high survival skill would give you (or maybe also your team) the benefit).

But arn't there other options?
In Fallout 2 you could get a car, but having a server with say 1000 people and everyone racing around in cars, that's just going to look silly, although if you could upgrade cars and apply guns whatnot to it (Mad Max - gota love it) that could actually make a cool PvP aspect, also I've never really seen a parking lot, so, where would you leave your car?

Or maybe make XX nr of cars, accesible to everyone but the cost to use the car is XX nr of some rare object and once you've traveled and are out of this resource someone else will probably steal the car you left behind and travel somewhere else with it. Or maybe it get's stolen if you make a quick stop to go to the toilet, hehe that'd be funny. It would definitively be fun if you're walking around in the middle of no where and you suddenly find a car that has run out of gas. Use a little bit of science, refuel, vrruuuummmm.

(How do you fit a Super Mutant in a car though... maybe on the roof, with a little wire attached to the steering wheel and a broom to throttle).

What about vertibirds? Isn't that a viable transport option, even though the lore has limited it's use to the enclave. (Or, better said, they are the only ones that have acces to them, even though you did steal the plans for the Brotherhood in F2 (or didn't you?)).

Although I must admit I do would like to ride a Brahim someday and if anyone would want to ride with me, you could ride the other head. Frank "Not even cockroaches kill their own species Fred".

Oooh, or snipe someone from his car and steal it from him. That could be a lot of fun! And not to much drama because the cars are no ones property anyways, and with some luck there's some loot in his trunk!

Which he got from a cave he rode to and emptied the stuff into his car multiple times... *dreams on* Frank "Not even cockroaches kill their own species Fred".

In FO3 there were a lot of parking lots with cars. Those were some of the most dangerous places to fight because of one car blew up, it could make a chain reaction and kill everyone in the parking lot. All throughout FO3 there were motorcycles, cars, and buses. In raider camps there were motorcycles with parts/wrenches/repair stuff suggesting that they would use those even though they didn't.

Ye that's great.

Do try 1 and 2 though, if you havn't already.
They are (imo) way better then 3, even though they don't have parking lots

So what's your opinion about Transport.....? Frank "Not even cockroaches kill their own species Fred".

Im ok with vehicles as long as its done in the lore and style of fallout. Hell im playing wow and there are mounts eeeeeeeverywhere, but i dont really think it detracts from the game.

Ye I agree, but a car is for 4 people and a mount for 1. (sometimes 2 nowdays). Imagine everyone on a mammoth would probably reflect best how it would look. Probably kinda silly :p Frank "Not even cockroaches kill their own species Fred".

Maybe there aren't cars but motorcycles, bicycles, or small coupe type cars.

This is from the fallout bible:

the question was if there where more than one car in fallout:
Probably not too many, but I don't know the exact number. The real problem isn't fuel, it's mostly tires and
other degradable parts that have gone to the dogs in the past 100 years. For every two hundred or so people,
there might be one working vehicle, and even "the local clunker" wouldn't be up to factory specs. NCR is
rumored to have a mechanized vehicle division outside of its farming vehicles, but the number of vehicles
in the division is unknown.

So, there you got it. Not many cars and for a reason as well. And I assume that the wasteland communities have bigger problems than not having working tires for cars. Image

RAIL SYSTEM...

I was reading the interview over at fallout online that this game seting will be more of a rebirth. I take that as the setting being further down the line than the previous titles, when soiciety has started to get back on its feet.
For this reason I say its perfectly reasonable to have a rail ststem to take you to different areas.
From there if you want to hire outa deathclaw powered rickshaw to take you to a specific area, thats cool.
I dont think that eveyone should expect to be racing around in vehicles though, even if realism dictates that people would rebuild cars and find tires/tire substitues. It doesnt fit the MMORPG concept (to me) and would only in small doses fit the Fallout setting at large. Like your heart when you realize you're dying... but you're trying.

sounds smart to me. i kinnda wanted there to be vehicles and ppl would fight over oil.. but thats too much like mad max and not fallout. riding some sort of animal, like the brahmin would be most fitting to the game imo In gaming terms... Life's a die, then you bich.

cars could work as high level mounts, the important hing is that there keeps just like mounts, aka a faster way to get from point A to B, as soon as you can drive over people it throws fair play out the window.

imo it depends on how long the world in fallout online has evolved, too soon and the tech advancement really should be kept in the low.. i wouldnt mind having to invent the wheel over again ;p In gaming terms... Life's a die, then you bich.

indeeds, i sorta referenced in my OP in this thread that it has been stated that its gonna most likely be well after the original series, during a rebuild era. Since the resource wars happened before the bombs fell, it wouldn't really be Fallout if people were fighting over oil.
I could see the appeal of a resource wars spin off. But that would be a completely different setting.

In the fallout setting, you'd really be looking more for a way to make nuclear powered cars work, since thats the majority of wrecked cars that youd be able to find.
I am sure there would be some combustion engines around. And that if fossil fuels weren't around they could burn alcohol. But i dont think cars really fit much more than finding a few here and there. Certainly not enough that everyone would be using them, unless it is so far after the fact that its not even a fallout setting. Like your heart when you realize you're dying... but you're trying.

Of course they woudnt make it so far into the future that the setting isn't recognizable as Fallout.
Especially not since gamesas has it in their hands to give what a lot of older fallout fans have been griping about-something truer to FO1 & 2. Like your heart when you realize you're dying... but you're trying.

I'll go ahead and admit my favorite reason for having the car in Fallout 2 was the trunk. I'm a hoarder and I hold onto everything I find on the wasteland.

As far as having it in the online game, I liked what someone else mentioned about making them very hard to achieve etc to cut down on the amount of them around. And what our last poster said about the car using an alternate fuel source.

Cars? Pffft. Brahmin? This isn't WoW and we aren't cowboys we're survivors. I don't really see a need for transportation beyond the map mode. Otherwise you possibly fix up a bike and it gets parked upon arrival a la fallout 2 style.

Nothing from the Fallout 1 and 2 universe makes you think that vehicles are in abundance. Like the quote from the game said, the degradable parts just can't be replaced. The car in fallout 2 wasn't just running like a champ when you found it. You had to bust your ass just to get the clunker to start and even then if I remember correctly you had someone else doing the complicated work.

I don't see a need for cars or fast transportation. I could imagine a train working but not in any type of safe happy condition. Possibly a hot air balloon. Bicycles would be EASY to make and keep maintained though. Who wants their uber desert warriors riding bikes though?

Random encounters would most likely not include PvP. As it was stated the balance would be nigh impossible. I could only see it being implemented if the flee zone was RIGHT next to your starting positions and you were spread out well enough that even a skilled sniper would have trouble picking you off.
