Transportation

Post » Sun Apr 11, 2010 1:19 am

This is gonna come out like some crazed angry rant but I need to vent somewhere and you're all the unfortunate recipients ;)
Apologies if it's been covered before and also I'd like to make it clear I absolutely love the Fallout universe and all the games.

Right! So why is there no transportation the Fallout world apart from Vertibirds, the Boomers' B-29 bomber(s) and the Highwayman car?

I mean you could fuse together a bunch of steel dinner plates to make wheels.
Surely with even smallest bit of selective breeding and training of Brahmins all the traders could mount them? I mean the trading companies like Crimson Caravan and Far Go Traders are supposedly gigantic commercial trading companies with huge trade routes. The Mojave Express is a big delivery company but they've yet to even think about the fact they could use transportation to make their deliveries?
You could stick a seat on a robotbrain, Mr. Gutsy or a Securitron.
BoS scientists can fix a gigantic fusion powered robot but can't come up with a simple transportation.
When the Boomers recover the B-29 Loyal tells you they have automated robots that can dismantle the plane, transport it and put it together perfectly at Nellis! How can they possess such sophisticated technology but there's no transportation?

Especially when you consider how functioning and relatively non-threatening the Mojave is by the time the Courier arrives. It's not like people are struggling to survive. You even have farms and fields yielding food.

Rant over :flamethrower: :banghead: :gun:

I've also pondered this. The NCR has trains they use to transport supplies and soldiers to and from the Mojave, but you never see those in game. I know that there is no fossil fuels left in the world, because the Enclave's oil platform was over the last accessable crude oil reserve, and that was destroyed (along with all the oil I assume). It still seems like someone could make a steam engine or a bicycle.

But then again, who needs transportation when you can fast travel?

When you fast travel you lose hours of in-game time so it's not actually that "fast". Not that time matters in the FO3 and FNV...

Aye but you have fusion power for robots. And there's fission batteries scattered about everywhere,

I know but I'm more thinking in line of the "Fallout Universe".

And according to non-canon sources trains, a few more operational cars and steam-powered wagons; There are also brahmin pulled carts Zepplins and other military vehicles.
I mean you could fuse together a bunch of steel dinner plates to make wheels.

I can't say I've ever seen a steel dinner plate. Mine are ceramic.

They do, they use brahmin pulled carts.
You could stick a seat on a robotbrain, Mr. Gutsy or a Securitron.
BoS scientists can fix a gigantic fusion powered robot but can't come up with a simple transportation.

Now why would they want to do that? They're not that interested in travel except to reach a certain location every now and again. They're not traders, they're isolationist scientists.
When the Boomers recover the B-29 Loyal tells you they have automated robots that can dismantle the plane, transport it and put it together perfectly at Nellis! How can they possess such sophisticated technology but there's no transportation?

They built it. And the boomers don't like to travel.

There's tin plates, but the point was there's many things you can easily use to create a wheel.

Right I wasn't aware about the Brahmin carts.

I didn't mean that the BoS specifically should use robots for transportation I just meant people in general.

I know the Boomers don't travel, I was pointing out how technically advanced and resourceful people in the Fallout universe can be.

Basically if whatever game engine they'll use for Fallout 4 supports vehicles I think they should be in it. I might not use the vehicles much myself as I enjoy walking about but It just doesn't make sense not to have some sort of transportation...

Fallout Tactics has alot of vehicles. I consider it canon and Bethesda has called the High-Level Events Canon.

I support the idea they were fueled by ethanol.

The big problem with transportation beyond brahmin and carts is knowledge to build and maintain it. This isn't so much a problem in places like the NCR capital, where there's a lot of people and probably a schooling system taken from the vaults; nor is it a problem for high tech communities that have a culture of technology, like the boomers and BOS. But these places are the exception not the norm, and even in these places (exclude the BOS from this) people are more likely to have skills that are a bit more practical for immediate concerns - Fighting skills, farming skills, etc.

I would have thought they would make some kind of transport.

A thing that looked like a early car with wooden wheels at least. Early cars looked like motorised carriages.

They could rig up a fission battery based engine with a cart base and car transmision set up and put seats in and steering, maybe.

They have carts pulled by brahmin.

Why they have not made riding Brahmin is a puzzle. It could not take that much selective breeding.

Maybe the game engine could not take it in F3 or FNV.

I don't think its a real puzzle... Never really heard of anyone riding a cow.

Actually they ride horses, (and occasionally bulls). The name Cowboy comes from the fact that they look after cows, not ride them...

Maybe with the creation engine AKA Skyrim engine they can do away with the limitation of the engine which even affects the gameplay and story.
